Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula（公式）. It is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get anything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind.
The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.
Above all, they knew how to use their brains.

Last year I ruined（毁） my summer vacation by bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my email. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed (推特简讯). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation but my head wasn’t.
So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal (退出) from the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control. But I was determined. I started by giving the iPad to my wife.
The cellphone signal（信号） at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration (沮丧). I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely cut off from email, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for radio and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to all along: read books.
This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem.I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “ I don’t need it,” I said.
However, as we return to post-vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work? There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great. And I have no intention（愿望） of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist（抵抗） the temptation (诱惑) to check my email every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.
I think a vacation is supposed to help you reset your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.

To develop one’s taste in English，the most effective way is to read English books extensively. However, one may be at a loss to choose the suitable books，especially as a beginner.I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice，recommended（推荐） by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But I had great difficulty in understanding the novel，let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me，but rather the way Austen constructs sentences，and her way of thinking，which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel Farewell to Arms. I particularly liked his brief and lively style. So my first suggestion is，as a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary （现代的）novels instead of classical ones.
However，reading novels is not the only way to improve your English. English essays（散文） can at once inform you，entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy(哲理) within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are indispensable.
Never follow other’s opinions blindly，however famous or influential the person might be. As a saying goes，one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind，we are sure to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
29. What made the author’s first English novel hard to understand?
A. Complex conversations. B. Not knowing the social background.
C. The old-fashioned vocabulary. D. Sentences and Austen’s thinking pattern.

A. necessary B. challenging C. related D. brilliant
31. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Choose books that challenging us most.
B. Read books that are instructive.
C. Don’t be affected by other’s choices.
D. Compare books before buying.
32. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. Give comments (评论)on literature（文学） works.
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Encourage people to read more English books.
D. Recommend first-class books to English learners.
They may be teenagers, but 17-year-old Brittany Bull and 16-year-old Sesam Mngqengqiswa have grand ambitions(雄心)—to launch Africa’s first private satellite（卫星） into space. They are part of a team of high school girls from Cape Town,South Africa, who have designed and built equipment for a satellite that will orbit over the earth’s poles scanning Africa’s surface.

Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. “Life has never been kind, but if we really want to enjoy it, it can only be possible with a positive attitude. The only way to have a better and pleasant future is to change outlook or attitude towards life.
Look at the Brighter Side of Things.
Even in the most unfortunate situations, there is always something to look forward to. In life, we do come across various situations where we compare our fate with others. 36 Never go to the comparison road, because it is endless.
Believe in Yourself.
Lack of motivation causes a great deal of stress, and negative thoughts easily pop up when a person suffers from an inferiority complex(自卑感). 37 Clear your mind and get rid of all the negativity.
38 it is also the first step in self-improvement, as improving oneself is only possible through positive thinking. It has been noted that positive thinkers are better equipped in handling disappointments as compared to pessimists(悲观者), as they usually focus on things that can be done to solve it rather than spending hours complaining.
Helping or being kind to someone in their time of need is probably the easiest way to be happy. It is by doing these simple deeds that important discoveries about oneself are made. 39__
Each day take a few moments and be thankful for all the great pleasures that life has provided. Even during tough times, remember the people who were always there and provided unconditional love and support. 40__
A. Think about everything that is right and forget about the wrong; your heart will be filled with thankfulness in no time.
B. Helping others, even in small things, helps in the birth of a happier and generous you.
C. Never think less of yourself because you are as different and important as everyone else.
D. Some people will always compare their worst with the best of others.
E. The best way to live is to get used to everyday changes and work hard.
F. Thinking positively is an important part of being positive.
G. First make the situation clear and see if they are right.

I’m glad to hear that you are considering making up with Peter. If I were you, I would consider a bike as a birthday present for him.
As far as I know, Peter is always in poor health so he can take more exercise by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go outing by bike together, which is helpful to rebuild your friendship. Besides, taking a bike is an environmentally-friendly means of transport. It’s convenient for him to get around as well.
Apart from giving him a gift, you can also adopt other means, such as travelling, seeing a movie, having dinner and going shopping. No matter what you do, being sincere is the most important. I really hope that we can be good friends forever.
