In1897hewasconvictedofembezzlingmoneyandsentencedtofiveyearsinprison.WhileinprisonPorterstartedtowriteshortstoriestosupporthisdaughterMargaret.PorterwasreleasedonJuly24,1901,forgoodbehaviorafterservingthreeyears.
Porter'smostprolificwritingperiodstartedin1902,whenhemovedtoNewYorkCitytobenearhispublishers.Whilethere,hewrote381shortstories.HewroteastoryaweekforoverayearfortheNewYorkWorldSundayMagazine.HemarriedSaraLindsayColemanin1907,butthemarriagewasnothappy,andtheyseparatedayearlater.O.Henry'slastyearswereshadowedbyalcoholism,illhealth,andfinancialproblems.Hediedofcir’rhosisoftheliveronJune5,1910,inNewYork.
