B The Man of Many Secrets — Harry Houdini — was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes — from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America. Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his “magic” tricks. Of course, his secret was not magic or supernatural powers. It was simply strength. He had the ability to move his toes as well as he moved his fingers. He could move his body into almost any position he wanted.Houdini started working in the entertainment world when he was 17, in 1891. He and his brother Theo performed card tricks in club in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. When Harry married in 1894, he and his wife Bess worked together as magician and assistant. But for a long time they were not very successful. Then Harry performed his first prison escape, in Chicago in 1898. Harry persuaded a detective to let him try to escape from the prison, and he invited the local newspapermen to watch. It was the publicity (宣传) that came from this that started Harry Houdini’s success. Harry had fingers trained to escape from handcuffs and toes trained to escape ankle chins. But his biggest secret was how he unlocked the prison doors. Every time he went into the prison cell, Bess gave him a kiss for good luck — and a small skeleton key, which is a key that fits many locks, pass quickly from her mouth to his.Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame. He arranged to escape from the local prison of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result? World-wide fame, and a name remembered today.59. We think of it as a candy, but once it was a medicine. Today, chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or just a snack. Sometimes it is an ingredient in the main course of a meal. Mexicans make a hot chocolate sauce called mole and pour it over chicken. The Mexicans also eat chocolate with spices like chili peppers. Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say “Ugh!” and run away. Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste. The word “chocolate” comes from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make a drink. When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao too. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes. Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was good for the digestion. In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink. Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate. Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together. People liked the taste of milk chocolate even better. Besides the chocolate candy bar, one of the most popular American snacks is the chocolate chip cookie. Favorite desserts are chocolate cream pie and of course an ice cream sundae with hot fudge sauce.62. It was ______that discovered sugar could remove the bitter taste of cacao.A. the workers in the chocolate factory B. the Spaniards C. the people in England D. the owner of a chocolate factory.63. According to the passage which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Nobody had the idea of adding sugar until the sixteenth century. B. The word “ chocolate” comes from a Mexican word. C. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys like them. D. Workers must dry and roast the beans to remove the bitter taste.64. The Spaniards think that cacao was a medicine because___________. A. it was strong and bitter B. it was good for digestion C. it cured man’s diseases. D. it was a kind of drink for good health.65. Which is the right time order of the events regarding chocolate? a. Chocolate became a cheap and popular drink in England. b. A factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate. c. The Spaniards started drinking cacao. d. It was found that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. e. A factory mixed milk and chocolate together. A. a-b-c-d-e B. c-d-e-b-a C. c-d-a-b-e D. c-d-b-e-a66. It can be inferred from the passage that___________. A. chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or a candy bar. B. Mexicans like chocolate very much. C. chocolate is a product of the cacao tree. D. people liked the taste of chocolate mixed with milk.D A. Tuvaluan people became rich overnightB. Signs of sinking have appeared on TuvaluC. The news came that the country would be drowned.D. Tuvaluan people have suffered from serious diseasesE. Desire to enjoy life has caused serious consequencesF. Tuvaluan people are improving their living standards despite the rising sea.67. ___________________ If you suddenly received a lot of money, how would you spend it? For the people of Tuvaiu, a tiny state comprising nine islands in the South Pacific, something unusual happened. In 1999 Tuvalu, with its population of 11,000, was the third poorest state in the world. Later Tuvalu received a domain name on the Internet --- the letters “tv”. A communication company from California quickly offered to buy the domain name for &40 million. The islanders became very rich.68. ____________________ At the same time the islanders received some very bad news. Due to global warming, and because the islands are only 3m above sea level, Tuvalu will probably become the first state in the world to disappear under the sea. According to scientific estimates, the islands will suffer severe floods within the next 15-20 years, and by the end of the century, the islands will have disappeared from sight altogether.69. ____________________ You can already see signs of the rising sea on Tuvalu. Pools of seawater appear here and there, some beaches are swallowed by the waves, and the roots of trees are rotting by the ocean. The rains caused temporary floods.70. ____________________ But despite these problems, the Tuvaluan had their new money. Paul Lindsay, a documentary film-maker, went all the way to Tuvalu, and came back with an incredible story. As the water rises, the Tuvaluan are using the money to develop the land that is soon to disappear. They are building new houses, planning nightclubs, restaurants and hotels, and new cars are driving around on new roads. ‘ Just because we are sinking, it doesn’t mean we don’t want to raise our standards of living.” Lindsay was told by Sam Teo, Tuvalu’s minister for natural resources.71. ___________________ Of the $ 40 million Tuvalu received through the Internet deal, $ 10 million was used to asphalt the islands’ Lgkm of roads. Before 1999 there were four cars on the islands. The Tuvaluan used to walk or cycle everywhere. There was a flood of imported foods and goods and soon these had unexpected consequences. The Tuvaluan people now suffer from diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Others discovered that it was too expensive for them to keep their cars. There is now a huge rubbish dump in the middle of this tropical paradise, covered with abandoned cars and other waste.

A recent survey shows that the health of the students in our school has been going from bad to worse in the past three years. The number of near-sighted students has increased from 78.2% in 2004 to 92.5% this year, while that of overweight students from 36% to 52.4%. Nearly 10% more students lack sleep because of more homework to do. Besides, over 15% more students become mentally unhealthy. To improve students’ health, we call for less homework. Only in this way can students get plenty of sleep and meanwhile prevent them from being near-sighted. Proper diets and exercise should also be paid attention to so that they won’t easily put on weight. With their heavy burdens removed, students can then keep in normal mental health.
