第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的4个选项 (A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
In recent years many countries of the world have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker’s life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then, variety is not an important factor.
Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important, and there is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus, while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to create it.
To what extent does more money lead to grater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them.

The climate of the west coast is the most moderate in Canada. Summers are cool and fairly dry and winters are mild, cloudy and wet. Even in midwinter, average temperatures are usually above freezing.

The weather forecast, a story about the candidates in an election, and movie reviews are examples of messages from the media. A communication medium, of which the plural form is media, is a means of communicating a message. Examples of media are televisions, radios, newspapers, books and telephones. The media that can reach many people at once are called mass media.
It is not difficult to think of other messages we receive through the mass media. Every day we get hundreds of them. Think about advertisements, for example. We see and hear these messages almost everywhere we go. Advertisements are important messages, even though they are sometimes annoying. They help us compare and evaluate products.
Most of us get more information from the media than from the classroom. Think, for a moment, about how you learn about local news and events. Do you depend on other people or the media? What about international news? What is the most important source of information for you? People who are asked this question usually answer, “Television”.
Think of all the messages you receive today. Perhaps you read a newspaper during breakfast, or maybe you read advertisements on billboards on your way to school. Did you listen to a weather forecast or the sports news on the radio this morning? Right now you are getting information through a very important medium of mass communication— a book.
We use the information we get from radios, televisions, newspapers and other media to make decisions and form opinions. That is why the mass media are so important. Editorials and articles in newspapers help us decide how to vote, consumer reports on television help us decide how to spend our money, and international news on radio makes us think and form opinions about questions of war and peace.
Education also plays an important role in the mass media. Students study current events with the help of newspapers, and foreign languages are learned from radio and TV all over the world. In schools and universities students hear lectures that have been video-recorded. Although the media are sometimes controversial, it would be difficult to get along in our world without he newspapers, radios or TVs.
51. Mass media are those ___________
A. which are favoured by most people
B. quickly communicating message to people
C. that can reach you from the faraway stations
D. televisions, radios and newspapers
52. What does the author think of the advertisements?
A. They are always well received since they help us compare and evaluate products.
B. They are the most important messages
C. They can not reach people without the mass media
D. They an tire people with them everywhere you live
53. The importance of the mass media lies in the fact that ___________
A. the information from them attributes a lot to people’s opinion forming
B. editorials are important for so to make decisions
C. war and peace depends a lot on the international news
D. newspapers can direct people’s opinions
54. Education __________ without the help of mass media

And festivals are regarded as the highlight of western culture. For example, Valentine's Day provides a vehicle for young adults to show their love. 第二节 读写任务(满分25分)
It’s just for fun
We can learn from the passage that western festivals become popular due to the following two reasons. One is being exposed to foreign culture and lifestyles , the other is Chinese purchasing power.
It’s true that more and more Chinese are fond of western festivals, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and so on. Last Christmas, some friends and I had a party in the pub. On that evening ,we sang lots of pop songs in Chinese , drank some beer and exchanged our learning and life experiences. We didn’t know its history or religion background at all, but we knew it was a great time for us to relax ourselves. In fact, we just celebrated it in a Chinese way.
So , in my opinion, when a festival comes, we should celebrate it if we have time, without considering it’s western or Chinese because it is time for fun.
