第一节:阅读理解(共15题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A small dog should be belly-up after eating a handful M&M's, at least according to conventional(常规的) wisdom. But watching "Moose," a friend's five-pound Chihuahua, race around a living room after his sweet snack makes one wonder: Is chocolate truly poisonous to dogs?
Dogs and humans have similar tastes. Like us, they seek out sweets and have no problem indulging. But unlike humans, our companions experience dangerous effects from eating chocolate—it can poison them and in some cases is fatal. Chocolate's danger to dogs depends on its quantity and quality. Large dogs can usually handle a small amount of chocolate whereas the same helping could cause problems for Moose and his pint-size family.
Chocolate is processed from the bitter seeds of the cacao tree(可可树), which contain a family of compounds known as methylxanthines. This class of substances includes caffeine and the related chemical theobromine(可可碱). Chocolate contains a significant amount of theobromine and smaller amounts of caffeine. These chemical constituents of chocolate can cause a dog's heart to race up to twice its normal rate, and some dogs may run around as if "they drank a gallon of espresso," according to Hackett. Moose, it seems, was on a "theobromine high."
Dogs are capable of handling some chocolate, but it depends on the animal's weight and the type of chocolate it eats. Unsweetened baking chocolate contains more than six times as much theobromine as milk chocolate, although amounts vary between cocoa beans as well as different brands of chocolate. Less than four ounces(盎司) of milk chocolate is potentially fatal for Moose and other small dogs, according to the ASPCA Animal Control Poison Center.
Around every confection-centered holiday—Valentine's Day, Easter and Christmas—at least three or four dogs are hospitalized overnight in the animal medical center at Colorado State. But in 16 years, Hackett has seen just one dog die from chocolate poisoning, and he suspects it may have had an underlying disease that made it more vulnerable to chocolate's heart-racing effect.
41. The underlined expression “belly-up ” probably means______.
A. dead B. poisoned
C. running around D. having a stomachache
42. All of the following are true EXCEPT__________________.
A. Chocolate's danger to dogs depends on its quantity and quality
B. People buy lots of chocolate around Valentine’s Day.
C. A ounce of unsweetened baking chocolate is safe for Moose..
D. There must be some theobromine or caffeine in espresso.
43. What can we learn about Hackett?
A. He is a vet B. He is a pet shop owner.
C. He is the owner of Moose. D. He is a doctor in a small hospital
44. It can be inferred from the passage that Hackett believes that______.
A. Chocolate is truly deadly to dogs
B. It’s OK to give chocolate to a big dog.
C. Pets are usually ignored around confection-centered holidays.
D. A healthy dog probably could survive a chocolate poisoning.
45. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. the chocolate poisoning of Moose
B. the compounds of different chocolates
C. how a handful M&M’s chocolate is poisonous to dogs

Is war unavoidable? Can war be prevented?
History tells that there were wars, great or small, in every century, in every decade. Throughout the ages, from the Stone age to the Atomic Age, men have been fighting, first with swords and shields(盾), then with guns and cannons, and now, hydrogen bombs and missiles are used for military purpose. But, in spite of all these, it is still my belief that war can be prevented and peace can be won, but it requires the effort of every one of us.
I am sure that we would not like to experience another world war. If it ever happens, two-thirds of the world and much of the civilization which men have gained through time, patience and effort will be destroyed. Will then the remaining one-third of the world be able to survive on its own?
Our task now is not to blame the past, but to plan for the future.
If there is peace in the world, men can use their rockets to explore the mystery of space, their submarines to explore the depth of the sea, their missiles to deliver mails and their fine equipment to penetrate(穿透) the jungles of Africa, instead of using them military.
Governments can use their money to build more schools, so that more children can be educated to be useful citizens. Scientists can use atomic energy to propel(推动) steamships and planes. They can also design new machines to increase the production of goods and thus improve the way of living of the people.
How can a peaceful world be achieved? It requires, in my opinion, the understanding and friendship between all people from all nations. Let no one suffer discrimination by reason of color, race, religion, or national origin. Let the rich support the poor and the strong help the weak.
We know that neither peace nor such a dream world can come true in a day or a month. It may even take decades or centuries. But let us plan and begin now.

The Chinese people stood out for me. They have been so friendly and welcoming, especially in Qingdao where they are excited about having the Olympics in their own port. I had found at Athens, Atlanta and even Sydney that the locals were initially very cool on the Olympics, particularly once work began on building the new infrastructure(基础设施). It got in the way of life, made them annoyed and it was only a fortnight before the Games started that anyone showed much interest in the sport.
Before we set out, there had been a lot of talk about the weather. When we arrived it was ideal sailing conditions and we had a couple of days of fine practice.
Naturally, once the regatta(划船比赛) started, the winds dropped immediately and we found that the strong tide made things difficult for the first three days of racing. This played into my hands as I am rather light at the moment and I could get up more speed than my rivals.
Competition was intense — only one of the top ten sailors in my Finn class was absent — but I won the first race, came second in the next and won a further seven in a row to wrap up victory with a race to spare.
This is the first time I have sailed in an Olympic class since last September as I have been busy with Emirates Team New Zealand, preparing for the Americas Cup next year. It was fantastic to be back in the water and I have taken a lot of confidence from my performance, especially as I had only five days’ practice before the regatta.
There is a chance that the Americas Cup will keep me away from the World Championships next year, so this regatta will have done my chances of getting into the Great Britain team for 2008 no harm.
I’m leaving China tomorrow for Sardinia, where I will be sailing in the Maxis Worlds. The Maxi boats are the biggest racing boats around, which should be a lot of fun, especially as there is a good breeze over there right now.
Then it is back to my home in Lymington for a week with my friends and family before heading off to New Zealand for three months of Americas Cup training — an exciting few months ahead!
51. The first paragraph implies that _________.
A. generally it is only a fortnight before the Olympics that people begin to show interest in the games.
B. the Chinese people are the most enthusiastic about the Olympics
C. Building of infrastructure for the Olympics often causes inconvenience to people’s life
D. people in Athens, Atlanta and Sydney didn’t like the Games
52. What does the underlined part mean?
A. This was what I am good at.
B. This was an advantage for me.
C. My hands held on to my boat firmly.
D. I got my boat well in my control.
53. How many races did the writer do and how many did he win?
A. 7 and 10 B. 8 and 9 C. 7 and 9 D. 8 and 10
54. According to the passage, which of the following is the right order of the writer’s schedule?
a. Busy with Emirates Team New Zealand
b. taking part in the Americas Cup
c. racing World Champions
d. racing the regatta in Qingdao
e. sailing in the Maxis World
A. a-c-d-e B. d-c-e-a C. a-d-b-e D. a-d-c-e
55. We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A. the writer has sailed in an Olympic class only once
B. The writer works for America
C. the regatta in Qingdao lasted at least 7 days
D. the writer is practising hard for the Beijing Olympics

第二节 读写任务(共l小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
January 10, 2008
Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to reflect some problems I came across recently and appeal to the improvement of the service industry.
This weekend I bought an English dictionary in a bookstore near my home since its cover is elaborately designed. But when I went home and carefully, I found that several pages of the dictionary have been cracked and befouled. What is worse, the misprints spread everywhere in the dictionary and seriously affect my comprehension. Since there was such damage and misprints to the dictionary, I went to the bookstore to require for a replace. But to my surprise, the staff of the bookstore turns down my request rudely and even denied the poor quality of the dictionary.
Today’s fast-paced and market-oriented economy calls for much higher standard for service industry. However, to my regret, many of the commercials fail to achieve this standard and the quality of the staff needs to be improved. It’s self-evident that the poor quality of practitioners in the service industry will not only deeply disappoint customers but also hamper the development of our country’s economy. As a result, I expect your newspaper to appeal to the service industry to attach more importance to the service improvement.
Thank you for you attention!
Sincerely yours
Mary
