Although these schools have to follow the national courses, they are allowed a lot of choices in deciding what to teach. Some of these new schools are called “small schools” because usually the number of pupils in them is only sixty, but a school has to have at least twenty-seven pupils.    Cooleenbridge School in Ireland, is a small school similar to the ones in Denmark, it was set up by parents who came from Holland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, England and other parts of Ireland. The camera is often thought to be a modern invention, but as early as 1727, a German physicist discovered that light darkens silver salt. Used as a camera, a big box was set up, and a small hole was cut in one side to let the light in; he made temporary pictures on the salt. Silver salt is still the basis of the photographic film today. Then a French scientist made the first permanent (永久的) picture by using a special piece of metal which was covered with silver salt. A photograph he made in 1826 still exists.    The painter De Gear improved the process (制作法) by covering the metal also with placing the common salt which we can eat. This was in 1839, the official date of beginning of photographs. But the problem was the printing of the photographs. And it wasn’t until other scientists developed the kind of photographic paper we now use that good prints were possible and photography became truly modern. In the 1870’s, Matthew Bradey was able to take his famous pictures in American Civil War. In the 20’s of this century, Georges Mann of the United States simplified film developing (冲洗), and Dr Edward Lane invented the so-called “Instant Camera” which uses self-developing film. If we say photography came into existence in 1839, it follows that it took more than 100 years for the camera to reach its present condition of technical refinement(密度).60. What discovery was the basis of photography?   A. Light darkens silver salt.           B. Light darkens natural salt.   C. Light darkens silver.               D. Light darkens self-developing film61. How was the first permanent picture made?   A. By making use of special paper.    B. By adding common salt to silver salt.   C. By giving a slight colour to the silver salt.       D. By using a special piece of metal.62. What does the speaker regard as the official date of beginning of photography?   A. 1727          B. 1826            C. 1839            D. 187063. According to the speaker, why is Matthew Bradey remembered today?   A. He was a soldier.                  B. He took war photographs.   C. He painted portraits.              D. He designed a portable camera. CIn many parts of the world, cars play an important role in daily life and many societies would not exist without them. So the idea that in 20 years’ time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe. But this is the prediction(预言) made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by government but also by car manufacturers(厂商).   The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program. The team there believes that by 2020 all cars will be computerized, which will mean much saving, no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car of the 21st century will drive itself, and it will not be owned by one individual. Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.   According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air, and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.   Davis says, cars will be fitted with some intelligent devices to regulate the distance between one car and another. The car will automatically(自动地) speed up, or slow down, to match the speed of the car in front. Computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people.By 2010, Dr. David Davis believes, car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road, whatever the weather conditions, by projecting an image of the road ahead on to the car’s windscreen. And by 2020, cars will travel in convoy, linked to each other electronically. Cars will be connected by an electronic tow bar to the car in front to form “road –trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the normal amount.” says Davis. “But all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount, and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”64. We know from the passage that governments and car manufacturers ________.A. do not believe the prediction that no one will own cars by 2020B. are devoted to the technological revolution in car industryC. consider the predictions seriouslyD. have put the super-intelligent car into mass production65. Which of the following will be the characteristic(特征) of the cars of 2020?A. The car will speed up out of controlB. We will own as many cars as we want C. All cars will be driven by computersD. Cars will produce more pollution than present ones66. The leader of the research team believes that the present car culture will change because ________.A. cars play a very important role in daily lifeB. many societies would stop functioning without carsC. cars should not be owned by one individual(个人)D. it causes many deaths to human society DYou have heard of Webster Toys.
