I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune, there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded (报答). When I left a 20-year job in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿者), I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering, What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test — even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is Shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.60. The passage is meant to ________.A. warn young people of the hardship that a writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to seek wealth and fameD. encourage young people to take up a writing career61. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing work?A. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.B. He found his dream would never come trueC. He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.D. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.62. “… people who die wondering, What if?” (Line 3, Para. 3) refers to “those” ________.A. who think too much of the dark side of lifeB. who regret giving up their career halfwayC. who think a lot without making any effortD. who are full of imagination even upon death63. “Shadow land” in the last sentence refers to ________.A. the wonderland one often dreams aboutB. the bright future that one is looking forward toC. a world that exists only in one’s imaginationD. the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached
C In 1837, to the age of seventeen, Florence Nightingale decided to become a nurse, which horrified her mother. In those days nurses were little more than doorkeepers, and hospitals were pits of squalor (污秽) and neglect. Nightingale pressed on, and in 1853 she became superintendent (院长) of a small London hospital. She went on to the Crimea when war broke out there between Britain and Russia. She established the first of what we know as war hospitals: sanitary (卫生), safe and stocked with supplies. Her tireless ministrations (照顾) to the wounded soldiers made her famous all over the world. Following the war Nightingale avoided fame and continued to train nurses, ever battling against what she herself declared a commonly received idea, that it requires nothing but a disappointment in love or incapacity in other things, to turn a woman into a good nurse. Since 1921 her birthday --- May 12 has been the centerpiece of National Hospital Week, observed in British and American hospitals with special exhibitions, workshops and publicity drives.64. Florence Nightingale was born on _____. A. May 12, 1821 B. May 12, 1921 C. May 12, 1830 D. May 12, 183165. The underlined word “it” refers to _______. DThe office has always been a place to get ahead. Unfortunately, it is also a place where a lot of natural resources start to fall behind. Take a look around next time you’re at work. See how many lights are left on when people leave. See how much paper is being wasted, how much electricity is being used to run computers that are left on. Look at how much water is being wasted in the restrooms. And how much solid waste is being thrown out in the rubbish cans. We bet(打赌) it’s a lot. Now, here are some simple ways you can produce less waste at work. When you are at the copier(复印机), only make the copies you need. Use both sides of the paper when writing something less important. Turn off your lights when you leave. Use a lower watt bulb in your lamp. Drink your coffee or tea out of your mugs instead of single-use cups. Set up a recycling box for cans and one for bottles. And when you’re in the bathroom brushing your teeth or washing your face, don’t let the tap(自来水) run. Remember, if we use fewer resources today, we’ll save more for tomorrow.69. The main purpose of the passage is to tell people . A. to save resources when working in an office B. the waste produced in an officeC. the disadvantages of working in an office D. how to save water in a restroom70. How many kinds of waste are mentioned in the passage? A. none B. two C. three D. four71. From the passage we can infer that in the office . A. using computers is a waste of resource B. many people don’t turn off the computers after using them C. computers are run by electricity D. a computer is not a must for working
EMalaria(疟疾), the world's most widespread parasitic(寄生虫引起的) disease, kills as many as three million people every year—almost all of whom are under five, very poor, and African. In most years, more than five hundred million cases of illness result from the disease, although exact numbers are difficult to assess because many people don't (or can't) seek care. It is not unusual for a family earning less than two hundred dollars a year to spend a quarter of its income on malaria treatment, and what they often get no longer works. In countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and the Gambia, no family, village, hospital, or workplace can remain unaffected for long. Malaria starts suddenly, with violent chills(寒战), which are soon followed by an intense fever and, often, headaches. As the parasites multiply, they take over the entire body. Malaria parasites live by eating the red blood cells they infect (感染). They can also attach themselves to blood vessels(血管) in the brain. If it doesn't kill you, malaria can happen again and again for years. The disease passed on to humans by female mosquitoes infected with one of four species of parasite. Together, the mosquito and the parasite are the most deadly couple in the history of the earth—and one of the most successful. Malaria has five thousand genes, and its ability to change rapidly to defend itself and resist new drugs has made it nearly impossible to control. Studies show that mosquitoes are passing on the virus more frequently, and there are more outbreaks in cities with large populations. Some of the disease's spread is due to global warming. For decades, the first-choice treatment for malaria parasites in Africa has been chloroquine, a chemical(药物) which is very cheap and easy to make. Unfortunately, in most parts of the world, malaria parasites have become resistant(抵抗的) to it. Successful alternatives that help prevent resistance are already available, but they have been in short supply and are very expensive. If these drugs should fail, nobody knows what would come next.72. According to paragraph 1, many people don't seek care because___.A. they are too poor B. it is unusual to seek careC. they can remain unaffected for long D. there are too many people suffering from the disease73. People suffering from malaria___.A. have to kill female mosquitoes B. have ability to defend parasitesC. have their red blood cells infected D. have sudden fever, followed by chills74.Which of the following may be the reason for the wide spread of the disease?A. Its resistance to global warming. B. Its ability to pass on the virus frequently.C. Its outbreaks in cities with large populations. D. Its ability to defend itself and resist new drugs.75. It can be inferred from the passage that___.A. no drugs have been found to treat the diseaseB. the alternative treatment is not easily available to most peopleC. malaria has developed its ability to resist parasites D. nobody knows what will be the drug to treat the disease
第Ⅱ卷第四部分写作第一节 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填人最恰当的单词。注意:每空格1个单词。For centuries people dreamed of going into space. This dream began to seem possible when high-flying rockets were built in the early 1900s.In 1903 a Russian teacher named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky figured out how to use rockets for space travel. His plan was the first one in rocket science to use correct scientific calculation. About 30 years later, a U.S. scientist named Robert Goddard built the first rockets that could reach high altitudes. During World War II, German scientists built large rockets that could travel very far and carry dangerous explosives. After the war, scientists from Germany went to the United States and the Soviet Union to help those countries build space rockets. These two countries were soon racing to get to space first. Each of these countries wanted to prove that it was stronger and more advanced than the other one. Both countries also had powerful bombs. People in the United States were worried when the Soviets were first to launch a space satellite, which was called Sputnik. The Soviets were also first to send a person into space. Yury Gagarin orbited the earth in the Vostok I spaceship in 1961.The US government set a goal for its space program to be the first country to put a person on the Moon. The U.S. space program built a series of Apollo spaceship. These vehicles were powered by huge Saturn 5 rockets. In 1969 Apollo II took three men to the moon successfully. Nell Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon. The Soviets may have lost the race to fly people to the Moon, but they built the first space station in 1971. The United States also built a space station. The space stations allowed people to live and work in space. Then the Soviet Union and the United States cooperated to hook two spaceships together in space. This action ended the "space race". Today a much larger space station, built by several countries together, orbits Earth.Another new way to go to space is by space shuttle. A space shuttle, first made in the United States in 1981, looks like an airplane. Astronauts who fly spaceships have used shuttles to help put satellites into space.History of space travelTime Events Information concernedEarly 1900s High-flying rockets were built.
