The new F4 in Meteor Rain (from left to right): Yu Haoming (Hua Ze Lei),Zhu Zixiao (Xi Men),Zhang Han (Dao Ming Si) and Wei Chen (Mei Zuo) Those who watched Taiwan’s TV drama Meteor Garden (《流行花园》), eight years ago, remember it fondly. The Japanese manga (漫画) based series made stars out of Barbie Xu and the idol (偶像) group F4 and its members Jerry Yan, Vaness Wu, Vic Zhou, and Ken Chu. But the TV drama’s popularity didn't end there. First, Japan was unhappy that someone else had stolen the limelight (抢风头,抢镜) from their own manga. So in 2005 and 2007, they produced their own Hana Yori Dango. South Korea then aired their own version, Boys Before Flowers, soon afterward at the end of 2008. And last month, Hunan TV began filming their reproduction Meteor Rain in Xiamen. The lead roles will be played by Happy Boys Yu Haoming and Wei Chen, and several other newcomers. Perhaps because the Taiwan version was so popular and there have already been so many re-adaptations, Hunan TV's remaking has led to plenty of discussion and complaints among netizens. According to them the Taiwan version is “first love”, the Japanese version “is good”, and the South Korean version “fashionable” though “full of kamahi (泡菜) flavor”. So what is the Hunan TV version left with? Many students at Xiamen University are also angry about the re-adaptation, as most scenes will be shot on their campus. They think the new series might affect their university's image, as the show is mostly about love and violence and students from rich families. However, the producers say they are going to remove a lot of the violence. They also plan to change the plot, turning what is a romantic idol drama into an inspirational (励志的) show. How do you feel about the suggested changes, and who will become your favorite among the new F4? The drama is expected to reach TV by the summer. 56. Which of the following are the mostly intended audiences of “Meteor Rain”?

I'm not a super-strict parent, but I think it’s important to have rules for children. It gives them a sense of structure—and that’s what we are all seeking. We just want to know when we’ve done something right or wrong. That’s what I'm trying to teach my own children [Ava, nine, and Deacon, five].
“My kids think I'm a little too chatty,” says Witherspoon.

I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and my parents taught me to respect my elders. We’d say things like “yes, ma'am” and “no, sir” to adults. But kids in Los Angeles don't do that. I've forbidden my children to call adults by their first names. I tell them they can call people “Miss Shannon” or “Miss Heather” but that using only the first name is too familiar. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.
Children should learn their values at home. In sixth grade, I took a manners class once a week. We learned things like “What's the right way to answer the telephone?” My kids set the table every night, and we eat dinner as a family.
I give each of the kids five dollars when we go to the farmers’ market on the weekends. They can buy something, save it, or spend part of it and save the rest. My son is just like me: The minute he gets the money, he spends it all on something delicious. But my daughter will go around the market for a half hour weighing the possibilities until she buys one thing.
I take my kids back to Nashville two or three times a year. They’re crazy about the trees and the food. A river runs through our neighborhood, and they love to walk up and down it—just like I used to do with my brother.
When I was little, my mother and grandmother were such big influences on me. My grandma used to read to me at night, all kinds of books. Now I love to read—I’ll buy ten books at a time!
My mother is my greatest supporter, and I'm hers. We take care of each other that way. And she's very chatty. She could talk to a brick wall for two hours. She used to chat with the grocery checker, and I'd say, “Mom, she doesn't want to know how long it took you to get to school today!” Now my kids do it to me. We'll go to church and I'll be talking to someone, and Deacon will be saying, “Come on, let's go home!”
60. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Witherspoon was a polite, strict and qualified female.
B. Witherspoon was an old-fashioned female indeed.
C. Children in Los Angeles are more polite than those in Tennessee.
D. Witherspoon allowed her children to call people’s first name.
61. The passage probably appears in the section of __________ if you read it in a website.
A. Celebrities. B. Amusement. C. People’s values. D. Parents and children.
62. What does paragraph 5 (I take my kids back) imply?
A. Witherspoon has a good memory about her hometown.
B. Witherspoon as well as her children has nothing to do but go hiking.
C. The family members are enjoying themselves.
D. A river runs through Nashville two or three times a year.
63. How many family members are mentioned EXCEPT Witherspoon altogether in the passage?
A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) —— Yahoo Inc wants viewers to “fall in love” with its effort to bring the Web to the TV, but questions remain about how the service will operate and how successful it will be in reaching consumers.
Yahoo's Web TV offering, which the company said will be free of charge, is centered on so-called “widgets”-- or small Internet applications -- that are lined up along the bottom of the screen.
By design, the widgets offer only a slice of the online experience and not a complete Web interaction. For example, there is no standard Web browser, and a conscious effort was made to avoid applications that involve typing.
Moreover, perhaps the most common online activity, Web search, is not offered for now. Whether consumers will find such a limited online service attractive remains to be seen.
“We want users to fall in love with the service before we gave them much information with ads,” said Patrick Barry, vice president of connected TV at Yahoo.
NORMAL ONLINE ACTIVITIES
Barry emphasized that the Internet experience is designed to never overshadow the TV's content. Users will be able to stream videos from YouTube, check news, share photos, and do many other normal online activities.
Yahoo formally showed the service publicly at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
The company managed to convince a number of consumer electronics heavyweights to include the widget service in their future products, announcing partnerships with companies including Samsung Electronics Co, LG Electronics Inc and Sony Corp.
The service will be included in TVs being shipped in North America and to 10 countries in Europe, Yahoo said.
The Web TV initiative(主动性)was originally jointly announced last summer by Yahoo and Intel Corp. But Intel's CE 3100 chip will be used only in Internet-enabled TVs and devices offered by Toshiba, and a set-top box from Samsung, the company said.
Wilfred Martis, director of Intel’s digital home group, emphasized that the partnerships announced at CES were only the start of the initiative.
“This is the beginning of this huge sea change in the consumer electronics space .... There have been a lot of false starts in this industry but I think we now have critical mass between content providers, service providers, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), silicon providers. Everybody is working together.”
64. The best title of the passage will probably be_____________.
A. Yahoo's Web TV with free of charge B. Yahoo's Web TV faces uphill battle
C. An important start with Yahoo's Web TV. D. Yahoo's Web TV without ads
65. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Yahoo Company has succeeded in reaching consumers.
B. The widgets offer a complete Web interaction on purpose.
C. Yahoo Company doesn’t offer consumers Web search at present.
D. Ads contribute to consumers giving up Yahoo’s Web TV.
66. The attitude of Wilfred Martis, director of Intel’s digital home group, is____________ according to the article.
A. Negative. B. Subjective. C. Optimistic. D. Neutral.
67. We may probably see the passage in the section _____________ of the Website.
A. Entertainment B. Lifestyle C. Consumers D. Science and technology

Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in a bid to cut the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.
Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo farts contain no methane(甲烷) and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who emit large quantities of the harmful gas.
While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack pushing out carbon dioxide, livestock passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions in some countries.
"Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from enteric methane from cattle and sheep," said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government.
"And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they're actually up around 50 percent," he said.
Researchers say the bacteria also makes the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.
But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria, before they can even start to develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep.
Another group of scientists, meanwhile, has suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos.
The idea is controversial(争议), but about 20 percent of health conscious Australians are believed to eat the national symbol already.
"It's low in fat, it's got high protein levels and it's very clean in the sense that basically it's the ultimate free range animal(散养动物)," said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales's institute of environmental studies.
68. According to the passage, global warming is now mainly caused by _____ .
A. methane B. carbon dioxide C. livestock passing wind D. not mention in this passage
69. What does the underlined phrase “the idea” (paragraph 9) refer to?
A. Australians should give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep.
B. The bacteria could make the digestive process much more efficient.
C. Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos.
D. The bacteria could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.
70. Some Australians begin to eat kangaroos because _____.
A. The kangaroos’ farts (放屁)contain no methane B. The kangaroos have a special bacteria
C. The kangaroos are the national symbol in Australia
D. The kangaroos are low in fat and high in protein
71. How will Australian scientists solve the problem of global warming?
A. Eating more kangaroos. B. Killing more cattle and sheep.
C. Letting cattle and sheep pass less wind.
D. Transferring the special bacteria in kangaroos’ stomachs to cattle and sheep.

American teens are setting an example for their parents through their volunteer work, according to a new poll by Harris Interactive.
The random national telephone survey released this week by the Federal Way-based charity World Vision found that more teens volunteer to support a charitable cause - 56 percent - than have a part-time job - 39 percent.
Parents and guardians said 82 percent of the teens in their lives do something to support charitable causes, including volunteering, recruiting others to a cause, wearing a button or T-shirt or donating money. Forty-six percent of the adults surveyed said they volunteer their time, but they are also praised for inspiring their children to volunteer.
The Harris Interactive poll was conducted in the United States between Jan 29 and Feb 2 among 2,003 adults.
Sara Johnson, a teacher who advises students at a private school in a Chicago suburb, says she's seen the interests of teen involvement in social causes since President Barack Obama was elected in November, 2008.
The Harris Interactive survey found a quarter of teens have become more involved in charitable causes or organizations as a result of the economic downturn, but the economy has also led to cuts in allowances, and has teens working more hours at a paying job.
Unlike many public high schools across the nation, Ileana Christian does not require its students to clock public service hours. Senior Melissa Martin said some kids are too busy with other activities like sports and music, but most of her classmates do volunteer.
Alynn Woodson, director of volunteer engagement at Habitat for Humanity International, said she has noticed a new enthusiasm among teen volunteers for the organization.
Habitat for Humanity celebrates the 20th anniversary of its alternative spring break program this year and is expecting more than 12,000 young people to help build homes for low-income people around the nation.
72. What can we learn from paragraph 2 and 3?
A. There were more teens volunteer than adult volunteers in supporting charitable causes.
B. Only 39 percent teens volunteer preferred to support charitable causes.
C. 82 percent of parents and guardians have supported charitable causes.
D. The adults surveyed want to be praised for their volunteering in charity.
73. The following statements are true EXCEPT__________.
A. Most of the public and private schoolmates take an active part in charitable causes.
B. Teens have much more difficulty in their part-time getting paid because of the economic crisis.
C. Some students in Illiana Christian not only like sports and music but also do volunteer.
D. Teens didn’t show much interest in charitable causes until Obama was elected president.
74. What’s the writer’s tone in the passage?
A. Subjective. B. Negative. C. Admiring. D. Criticizing.
75. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The origin of charitable causes

do sb. a favor或do a favor for sb.
23.A 由于受a…life的影响,容易选B。 Life today is different from what it was 30years ago.
It is true that构成一个主语从句,而主语从句内部又有一个以when引导的时间状语从句。
27.B “one of +名词/代词“接定语从句时,先行词是前面的名词或代词,而不是one,因此可以排除A和C;再根据live用作及物动词时一般要接同源宾语live (a happy/ sad/poor, etc.) life,因此选B。
29.B rather than与the sales girls形成比较结构,去掉rather than the sales girl旧可以看出宾语从句实际上是一个强调句,被强调的部分是宾语从句中的主语the sales manager,后面的rather than the sales girls也对句子谓语动词形式的选择形成了一定的干扰。
由于the TV set在定语从句中作宾语,所以可以省略关系代词that或which。 The TV set that/ which he has had repaired works well now.主句为The TV set works well now.
34.B 前一部分考查devote one’s time to doing sth句式。
35.C Mr Tom does为定语从句修饰all,后面的does do是谓语动词的强调形式。Do good to是“对…….
37. D 写作时应该是“坐在桌子前”,用at a table。
40. B 下文“was a story about a rabbit……Rabbit”暗示了此题的答案。novel指一般的小说;
44. D spend time (in) doing sth.
48. A 表示“某人产生一个主意”常用an idea comes to sb, an idea strikes sb或sb hits on/upon
an idea。
49. B 与上学有关的短语为study at/in a school, attend a school, enter a school和go to school。
50. B 火车进站、出站常用动词pull into和pull out of。
52. B 从后边的over her lunch hours可知,此处应选pubs(酒店)。
53. A 从上文的notes一词和下文的to finish the book可知,此处表示Harry Potter那本书的
表示“着手干某事”常用set out to do sth
和set about doing sth两个短语,由后边的不定式结构推断出选D。set off表示“动身,出发”;
根据第五段首句 “Many students at Xiamen University are also angry about the re-adaptation, as most scenes will be shot on their campus….”
根据第一、二段内容我们可以知道Witherspoon是一个polite, strict and qualified female具体表现在:第一段中的…have rules for children和…when we’ve done something right or wrong.以及第二段中的…I've forbidden my children to call adults by their first names.
I take my kids back中的最后一句可以暗示出本题答案应该选C。
文章中所提到的她的家人有her children (Ava, Deacon), her parents, grandmother一共5人。
所以不可能是Negative(否定的),Subjective(主观的),和Neutral(中立的)。
从最后一段的第一句“It's low in fat, it's got high protein levels”可知应选D。
It is+adj. + to do sth."。
77. 【答案与解析】where →which / that或去掉where。
either…or…
84. 【答案与解析】was→ is。
85. 【答案与解析】before→ after。
Dear Student Union,
I have just read the ad on the school bulletin and the moment I saw it I took an interest in becoming one of the volunteer English teachers of the five. Now I’m writing here to apply for this opportunity.
I am Li Hua, a girl of 18, and I have a good command of English. For two years I have been tutoring two primary school kids in English.Presently I work as a member of Loving Heart Club in our school.Voluntary work has helped me build confidence and good communication skills.
In my opinion, being a volunteer teacher at the SOS village is obviously more than just teaching; furthermore, it is helpful to broaden our horizons and improve our understanding of the world. That’s why I’d like very much to take this opportunity and make the most of my special talents and interests.By helping those kids, I feel I can make a big difference to their future and make a small contribution to society.
I’d appreciate it so much if you could possibly consider my application.I’m looking forward to your early reply and please email me at lihua@ yahoo.com.cn.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
