Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. A          Sure enough, at that very moment as they looked back, they saw the man bend down to examine something on the pavement. Then he looked all around for some moments. They held their breath. The man bent down again, and prodded(以尖物推或刺)the pavement with his shoe.          Toad(癞蛤蟆),who at the best of times would not have been fast enough to escape pursuit, was so tired that he could hardly move at all. As he felt the toe of the man’s shoe touch him, he shuffled(慢吞吞地走)a mere couple of inches towards the road. His friends were on all on the safe side of the road and he felt completely abandoned. The man’s shoe started to move towards him again. The next thing he knew, there was a flurry(阵风)of wings above him, followed by a sharp  cry of pain.          Then Fox was by his side, “Fast as you can, up my tail,” he whispered. Toad grasped Fox’s thick bush and held tightly with his front feet, pulled himself slowly up. Fox did not stop more than a moment. Once he was sure Toad was off the ground, he raced back across the road again, with Toad hanging grimly on behind.          Tawny Owl(猫头鹰)had stretched out his claws and skimmed(掠过)the man’s head, raking through his hair. The man’s arms flailed(用力挥动)wildly upwards and caught the bird a glancing blow on the back, but Tawny Owl, seeing that Fox and Toad were out of danger, flew steadily upwards in a wide arc(弧)until the man could no longer see him. Then he flew back over the road, and over the railing, landing by the gorse(金雀花)patch. The moment of danger had passed.          Tawny Owl looking through, most of the animals seemed to be silent, and in the dimness(朦胧)he could make out various shapes crowded together around the gorse.          “Thanks, Owl”, he heard Fox whisper. “All safe now. Everyone’s exhausted—no wish to talk at the moment…”he broke off to yawn. “We’re well hidden here…oh, I’m so tired…I think I’m the only one still awake. Toad’s asleep already.”          “Good night, Fox.”          “Good night, Owl.” He whispered. “See you in the evening.”          Tawny Owl flew slowly away to join the other birds before it grew light. The first stage of the journey was complete. 56. According to the first paragraph, what attracted the man’s attention on the pavement?    A. Something sticking to his shoe.                       B. His friends on the other side of the road.    C. An animal which was lying exhausted.        D. An object which had made him trip over. 57. How did Toad escape?    A. By not moving and pretending he was dead.        B. By climbing on to Fox’s tail.    C. By getting on to a broom pushed by Fox.               D. Tawny Owl lifted him into the air and carried him. 58. Where were the rest of the animals hiding?    A. In the grass on the opposite side of road. B. Near the trees where the rest of the birds were. C. In the long grass on the other side of the fence across the road. D. In the gorse patch at the other side of the road. 59. What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 1 refer to?    A. Friends of the man.                                    B. Toad and other animals.    C. Fox and Tawny Owl.                                   D. The man and his shoe. 60. What time of day would they be starting the second stage of their journey?    A. During the evening of that day.              B. Early next morning.    C. At lunch time.                                              D. Tomorrow afternoon. B          Modern technology has allowed scientists to map the parts of the brain that are active when we dream. The brainstem(脑干)is very active, but so are other important areas at the front of the brain. These are the frontal lobes(额叶)that control emotions, memory, and experiences that come through the senses like hearing and vision. If these areas are injured, the person stops dreaming. On the other hand, the areas that control rational, logical thought are not active at all. This could explain why dreams are so strange. They have no logical sequence or time, which makes them very difficult to explain to other people when they wake up. Those dreams that combine recent events with long past events and our emotions while we are dreaming are often very strong.          Psychologists have also done studies on people who kept dream diaries for long periods of time (up to fifty years in some cases) and have found that what we dream is very much connected with how we think and behave when we are awake. So an extrovert, adventurous person will have extrovert, adventurous dreams. A shy person will be a shy person in his dreams. People who are important to us will often be in our dreams and so will things that worry us or make us happy.          So what’s the conclusion? Well, nobody really knows. But scientists are now suggesting that dreams have absolutely no purpose at all. When we are awake we are “thinking” all the time. Some of the thinking is useful and has a purpose. But we often just “think” about nothing in particular while we’re waiting for the bus or walking to work. And that’s what the brain is doing when we are asleep—just thinking. Sometimes it’s interesting and sometimes it’s boring.          Doing the research for this article had made me more interested in my dreams rather than less. I might even start a dream diary! But nothing that I’ve read explains why I sometimes have an embarrassing dream. 61. According to the passage, which part of the brain is not so active when we are dreaming?    A. Brainstem of the brain.                                      B. Frontal lobes of the brain.    C. The part controlling memory.                 D. The part controlling rational, logical thought. 62. It is difficult for us to explain our dreams to others because_______.    A. the areas that control emotions are not active B. dreams combine recent events with past events    C. dreams have no logical sequence or time              D. the brainstem of the brain is very active 63. Generally speaking, what you have dreamt may mostly have something to do with ______.    A. a shy person whom you’ve met                       B. an adventurous person you’ve met    C. the people you have forgotten                         D. what you think when you’re awake 64. What the brain is doing when we are asleep _____.    A. has no purpose                                                     B. is always boring    C. is useful for us                                                      D. is about a bus 65. We can infer from the passage that _____.    A. the writer is used to writing a dream diary           B. the brainstem is very active in the dream    C. things that worry us can be in our dream     D. what we see can be analyzed by frontal lobes C Peek—the real-life “savant” on whom Dustin Hoffman’s character in the film Rain Man is based knows 9,000 books off by heart; he can direct people around US cities from maps he has memorized years ago; and he has total recall of the dates of all major world events.          Now studies of Peek’s abilities are being used by scientists to shed light on the human mind, and to open the way for men and women to exploit(利用)far more of their intellectual potential, as the latest issue of Scientific American reveals.          “Kin’s story tells us that the human brain is far more flexible than we had thought,” said Darold Treffert, a psychiatrist(心理学家)of the Scientific American Paper and told The Observe.          “Like many other savants, he has suffered disability in one area of his brain, but has been rewarded by acquiring remarkable new abilities in other areas. This shows we all have considerable hidden intellectual potential. By studying Kim and other savants, we can learn how to develop those powers.”          Kin, now 54, was born with a malformed cerebullum(畸形的小脑),and at the base of his brain, lacks a corpus calosum(数据储存区), the thick bundle of nerves that normally connects the brain’s two hemispheres(半球). In 1988 he was given an IQ rating of 87, well below the average.          Kin has poor physical condition, cannot button his shirts but has remarkable memory power and has started to develop as an accomplished pianist in the last two years. This latest development—in a man in his 50s with large chunks of his brain missing—is particularly significant, added Treffert. “His brain is still adapting to his condition, even in mid-life”.          “He remembers 98 percent of what he reads,” said his father Fran. “It’s like down loading data on a hard disk—expect his never crashes.” 66. From the text, we can learn “savant” is ________.    A. a person with extraordinary ability                          B. a person with a low IQ    C. a person with a malformed cerebellum                  D. an accomplished pianist 67. Scientist are studying Kin’s case in order to_____.    A. help him better develop his abilities                       B. help Kim improve his IQ rating    C. find more such persons in the world                        D. help humans exploit their potential 68. The writer mentions Kin’s experience of learning to play the piano to _____.    A. tell us his achievement in music                               B. show how different he is from others    C. show it is possible for people to learn complicated skills in mid-life    D. tell us about his life experiences 69. Which of the following statements about Kin is true according to the passage?    A. He was born with a healthier brain than ordinary people    B. He enjoys better health than most people    C. He remembers almost all that he has ever read.    D. He has a higher IQ rating than most people. 70. The underlined “we” in Paragraph 4 refers to ______.    A. people with malformed cerebellum                         B. people like Kin    C. ordinary people                          D. scientists PART FOUR: WRITING Section A (10 points)                                                      Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information from the passage. WRITE NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.          There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.          People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.          Though in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit   As the distance from Yellow Sky grew shorter, the husband grew more restless. As a matter of fact, Jack Potter was beginning to get very nervous. He, sheriff (司法执行官) of Yellow Sky, a man known, liked and feared, a well-respected person, had gone to San Antonio to meet a girl he believed he loved and there, after the usual prayers, had actually married her, without telling anyone in Yellow Sky. Because he knew everyone in the community would be surprised and shocked, he was not looking forward to bringing his bride back home. Of course, people in Yellow Sky were free to marry, and the town often celebrate their marriages, but Potter, a bachelor(单身) of long standing, thought of his duty to his friends. He had promised to them he would remain a bachelor forever, but face to face with this woman in San Antonio, he had gone head over heels in love. Because no one knew him in San Antonio, he found it easy to get married. But now they were approaching Yellow Sky. He knew full well that his marriage was an important thing in his town. The men in town would not forgive him. Frequently he had thought of telling them by telegraph, but even though as sheriff he had often faced the guns of offenders without fear, he was afraid to do it. And now the train was hurrying him towards his friends, who would laugh at him, curse him, and never drink with him again. Knowing that soon the train would leave them standing by the tracks in Yellow Sky, he planned the trip from the station to his house. They would get to his home as fast as possible, so no one would see them. Then, once home, he would quietly go out alone, tell someone---anyone----the awful news, and retreat to his house to hide until the citizens got tired of talking about him and his new bride. 81. What did Potter do in San Antonio? (no more than 8 words)   82. “Jack was not looking forward to bringing his bride back home” suggests ____________.    (no more than 9 words)   83. How would the people of Yellow Sky know about Potter’s marriage? (no more than 16 words)   84. What kind of man did the town’s people think Potter, sheriff of Yellow Sky should be? One possible version:          Which one is more important, health or wealth? This is a hot topic we are always discussing. Some people say that health is more important than wealth. However, others argue that wealth is more important than health.          As far as I am concerned, health is more important than wealth. There are at least two reasons for this. Firstly, money can’t buy health. If you are in poor health, money is of no use. Secondly, as long as you are in good health, you can enjoy your life better and make more money.          Of course, we can’t live without money. So I think keeping fit is the first and then we should make more money to make our life easier. Anyhow, without health, everything means nothing to you. Please keep fit!
