Dear Merry,
Recently, I have trouble with my study.
In school I can’t listen to teachers carefully because I always feel tired and sleepy. I
don’t spend time with friends after class either because I think it’s a waste of time. I even miss writing some answers in the test.
At home, I can’t get my homework done every night. My parents don’t let me stay up.
So I have to get up early the next morning to finish it. Lately, I even get a bad headache.
How can I solve these problems?
Yours,
Liu Ya
Dear Liu Ya,
When you have trouble listening to teachers carefully in class, you can ask your
teachers or deskmate to remind you often. Then spending time talking about many different
things with friends can make you happy. It’s not a waste of time. As for homework, when it’s
hard to get finished, one thing you can try is setting goals for yourself. Ask your parents to
help you. You must take a break, especially if you don’t feel well. You might be surprised but
a short break can help you get more done! Lastly, if you don’t worry and have enough sleep,
your headache will leave you.

For most students, the time of exam is very stressful and difficult. How to get through
exams? Here are some suggestions from education psychologists(教育心理学家).
* Ask a teacher how to review and how to work when you are in an exam.
* Take short rests during your work time and revision. If your mind is tired, you will
not remember things well.
* Plan your work, review when you know you will work at your best.
* Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.
* If you feel ill or worried, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too
relaxed! Some pressure of exams also makes you work hard.
* If it upsets you to talk to your friends about the exam, don’t do it! In fact, don’t
even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done. You cannot change
what you have written!
To this advice, we would add:
* If you are studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind
will still be thinking too much. Do something else, and maybe walk or listen to music. Do
something that will relax you and help you fall asleep.

took them home and put them in a small cage. She fed them with love and the birds grew
strong. Every morning they greeted her with a beautiful song. The girl loved them very much
and wanted their singing to last forever.
One day the girl left the cage’s door open. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew
out of the cage. The girl watched worriedly as it circled(盘旋)high above her. She was
afraid that it would fly away and she would never see it again. So when it flew close, she
grasped ( 抓 ) at it wildly. She was very happy that she held it tightly within her hand! Suddenly, she felt something had happened to the bird. She opened her hand and was
surprised to find the bird was dead. Her love for the bird killed it.
She noticed the other bird jumping in the cage. She could feel that it wanted to be free. It
hoped to fly into the clear, blue sky. She lifted it from the cage and flew it into the air. The
bird circled once, twice, three times...

There were three big fish in the lake. One of them, Demo, was wise; another one, Jimmy,
was half-wise; Martin, the third one, was stupid.
Some fishermen came to the bank of the lake with their nets. The three fish saw them.
Demo decided at once to leave, to make the long and difficult trip to the ocean. He
thought, “I won’t discuss with these two about this. They love this place so much that they
call it home and will stay on. How silly they are! They still haven’t realized we are in great
danger now. Their ignorance will cost them their lives.”
Seeing the wise fish had left, Jimmy thought, “My guide has gone and now I’ve lost my
chance to escape.” He felt sorry for it and then thought, “What can I do to save myself from
these men and their nets? Perhaps I should pretend(假装)to be already dead, giving myself
totally to the water.” So he did that. He went up and down with the water, helpless, within
arm’s reach of the fishermen.
“Look at this! The best and biggest fish is dead.” One of the men lifted him by the tail,
and threw him up on the ground. He rolled(滚动)over and over and moved secretly toward
the water, and then, back in.
The third fish was aimlessly jumping about, trying to escape with his speed and
cleverness. The net, of course, finally closed around him, and as he lay in the hot frying-pan

I think it is safe to say that snakes are not popular among most people. It would be hard to find a
person who is neutral(中立的), or simply doesn’t care one way or the other. What I wonder is why
something even without legs causes such great fear.
Snakes are quite useful, but that doesn’t seem to matter. Snakes help control the population of mice.
Without snakes, perhaps we would find mice everywhere. Most of us, however, would rather see a mouse
than a snake.
The poison argument(毒性的争论)is a strong one. Some snakes are poisonous, and this causes
people’s death. However, the poisonous snakes are only a small number. We can’t say all the snakes are
bad just because of a few dangerous ones.
And what do we do with the people who really like snakes? They like snakes even more strongly than
we dislike them. These people learn about them, find them out, and watch them carefully. Why? The only
reason I can think of is that these people are open-minded. They are able to put aside differences and
welcome the snake as a friend.
Whatever the reason for our like or dislike, snakes do something good in the circle of life. They would
prefer to be left alone, and that is what we should do. If you’re lucky, you might not run across more than a
few of them in a lifetime. That would be fine with most of us.
51. How does the writer describe the appearance of snakes?
A. Something even without legs.

B. they control the population of mice
C. they are not dangerous to people
D. they are only a small number
54. People who really like snakes are open-minded because they _______.
A. are able to put aside differences

American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning
of the term, students must select their courses and teachers first. While in China students
usually have no chances to select their courses and teachers.
Selecting is very important for your grades in America. So at the first term, don’t select
too many courses, or you’ll feel very nervous and it may influence your study. The you
have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, time
arranging, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different
teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called a “killer” by the last grade,
many students will give up choosing him. Because this kind of teacher will leave too much
homework, too many exams an give too low grades.
There is another thing after you select the course and the teacher. How to buy textbooks
makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each copy is
about $ 30- $ 50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some
students usually borrow textbooks from the school library. You must get ready before class.
In class, discussion is very important. 老师鼓励你提出问题或展示你自己的观点。 They
don’t usually ask you to sit well. Instead, they allow you to sit or stand everywhere you like.
They don’t give you much homework to do. You can learn some knowledge and do exercises
by yourself. So in American schools, you must do almost all things yourself.
56. At the beginning of the new term, American students have to ask for some teaching plans
and get their textbooks ready besides ____________________.

many exams and give too low grades.

Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised.
“You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish...” He hesitated

“Homestay is a form of study abroad program. It allows the visitor to rent a room
from a local(当地的)family to better understand the local lifestyle. It also helps to
improve the visitor’s language ability,” said a teacher during a school meeting last term. “Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience
should join this kind of holiday. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.”
After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I
had a chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to
London, a place where I had wanted to go since years ago.
As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked
after us. After we got to London, we went to stay wit different families. I was lucky that
my host family(寄宿家庭)was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They
treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me
and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.
The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher
would come to take us in his car. Then we would have classed or go on a sigh-seeing trip
to different places of interest like the Gig Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham
Palace. We would go back to our own homes after the activities.
The holiday was a valuable experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yet, time
really flew fast. Three weeks later, we had to leave “home” for Hong Kong.

In the UK, bus journeys are very common. Buses are often convenient(便利的)for the
people who live or work in the city center. Passengers can avoid heavy traffic and do not have
to pay for the parking. However, taking the bus is just a necessary but boring part of life: they
get on the bus, pay for it and sit down or find a place to stand when it is crowded. Everyone
seems sad and bored.
In Latin America, however, bus trips can be wonderful. For a start, films are showed on
the buses between cities for passengers to have fun along the journeys. Local buses do not
show films, but drivers usually turn on the radio and it can be great for passengers to listen to
songs and get relaxed.
Even better than films and music are the sights and sounds on the buses. Local buses
always go to parts of the town that passengers would not visit by themselves. There
passengers can see shops that they have never heard about. And they can also see other
cultures of the town from the windows of the buses.
Besides, passengers’ luggage(行李)is also interesting. It is common to see a happy
dog’s head getting out of somebody’s bag or a lovely chicken “speaking cheerfully” under
somebody’s arm. Once on a bus in Peru, a farmer even tied a sheep to the top of the bus. It
was quite surprising.
In all, taking the bus in Latin America is really fun and unforgettable.

How to prevent such sad accidents? In my opinion, first, we shouldn’t go swimming in

On a cold morning, while I was buying breakfast, I saw a girl in front of me buying some
bread and milk. When the girl was about to leave, she found there was a poor old beggar
under the tree. He looked so cold and hungry that the girl wanted to help him. So the girl went
close to the beggar and offered her food to him. The beggar thanked her happily and the girl
went away with a beautiful smile on her face.
At that moment, I was moved. I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. We
should learn from her and help the people in need.Unit 6 综合试题答案

One day a crow stood on a branch near his nest. He felt very happy with the meat in his
mouth. At that time, a fox saw the crow with the meat, and he wanted to get the meat.
However, whatever the fox said to the crow, the crow just kept silent. Suddenly, the fox came
up with a good idea, he said the crow’s voice was the most beautiful of all and asked him to
sing. The crow felt happy and opened his mouth to sing. As soon as the meat fell down to the
ground, the fox took the meat and went into his hole.

Why Should We Protect Wild Animals?
Many wild animals are in danger now. I think we should protect them.
First, we should realize that they are our friends. We need them. They live with us on the
earth together. If there are no animals on the earth, we will not live on the earth, either. And
once they are gone, there will never be any more. Second, every animals has its place in the
balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.
All in all, wild animals are important to us, so protecting them is also protecting
ourselves.

Let’s Read More!
To go with the Civil Reading, our school has done a survey and found that 56% of the
students spend less than one hour reading after class each day, while 33% read for 1 to 2
hours, and only 11% read for more than 3 hours.
This is not satisfying. As we all know, reading makes a full man. Reading not only
increases our knowledge, improves our ability to solve problems, but also help us form a good
habit and makes our life colourful. As students, it’s time for us to read more. Let’s start reading clubs, set classroom
bookshelves and organize reading competitions, so that we can do better in our study.

My Favorite Place in School
These years, our school has changed a lot. There are more new and interesting places,
such as a nice music room, a modern library and a new playground. Of all these places, the
music room is my favorite. The music room is on the fifth floor. It has been there for two years. There is a piano in
the corner and there are forty colorful boxes in the room. We can sit there and they can also
be put together to make a stage. I am glad to have music lessons there. Although I am not
good at singing, I am becoming interested in it. What’s more, listening to music can make me
relaxed when I am under too much pressure. What an amazing place it is!

The thing I like most is a doll. It is a dog with big black eyes and white curly fur. I got it
from y aunt on my 5th birthday. Since then it is always on my bed and I can’t go to sleep
without kissing it good-night. When I went to a boarding school, I took it with me. My
roommates used to laugh at me about it, but I still kept it beside my pillow. I love it so much
because it gives me comfort whenever I feel down. I am very thankful to my aunt and will
cherish the doll forever.
