The Earth is our home and we only have one Earth.
However, our Earth is facing a lot of serious problems now. Firstly, there are more natural
disasters than before, such as floods, earthquakes. Secondly, many animals are in danger and
some of them even die out. Thirdly, the areas of forests are getting smaller and smaller.
Several reasons lead to these problems. People cut down too many trees. As a result, a lot of
wild animals have no place to live or food to eat. What’s more, people kill or hunt animals for
their fur or bones. Besides, more and more personal cars in the streets make air pollution worse
and worse.
It’s time to take action to make our Earth better. The government should make laws to
prevent people from cutting down too many trees. Also, we students can tell the people around us
to drive less and walk more. In a word, everyone should know the importance of protecting our
Earth.

Nature’s Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, beware! A dangerous storm might be
coming. Storms are frightening. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends
these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Steps to keep safe
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed or
baseball dugout. They are not closed like a building, so they are not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can
blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.
Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity either.
Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer
games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is
more fun than playing computer games.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but
that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulled toward tall poles and trees. Stay down low in an
open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.

Today almost everyone has a smart phone .Phone booths(电话亭) are out of date and seem to
be useless. But cities like Shanghai are trying to bring the old phone booths to life.
Shanghai will make changes to 263 phone booths in Xuhui District. The Library Booth is one
of the six new kinds of booths, offering 60 booths for people to borrow and read. Another kind
allows users to listen to audiobooks( 有声书)and even record their own voices.
Shanghai is not the only city trying to save the old phone booths. London cares about them
even more, because the red booths have long been a special scene in London since the 1930s
when they were painted all red. In recent years London has tried to help phone booths stay useful.
The UK company British Telecom has added screens and free WiFi to some booths. Users can use
them to surf online and search for maps and weather reports. The company also allows people to
rent(租)some booths to change them as they want to. Since 2009, more than 1,500 phone booths
have been turned into flower shops, mini-cafes, art museums and even shower rooms.
In New York City, three phone booths in Time Square are turned into places for immigrant(移

from the newest New Yorkers. They can also open the books inside the booth to know more about

Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It reminds people not to waste
food and fight hunger.
A number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. The food shortage(短缺)
is a big problem all over the world. Now, there are more than 1000 million hungry people in the
world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of
hunger each year.
There are several reasons for food shortage. First, there are more natural disasters. Also, a
growing population(人口) makes feeding everyone more difficult.Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away
every day. The average( 平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the
UN, more than one third of all food goes to waste each year.
Over 1,300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year. The food wasted in Europe can feed
200 million people, while in Latin America 300 million a year.
So think twice before you throw away food. You’d better order as much food as you can eat at
a restaurant. If you can’t eat all, take the rest home. Some food may not taste great, but your body
needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源), such
as energy, time and water, are also wasted while growing and cooking. So everyone should know
that it is important to save food. Saving food is saving ourselves.

We need animals. Every animal has its place in the balance(平衡) of nature. We should try to
help save the animals.
Some people think zoos are good places. The zoos provide the animals with comfortable and
safe living places. If the animals get hurt or ill, people will take care of them. The zoo is a good
place to know the rules in the wild world. We can be much closer to nature. We can know more
about the animals in the zoos by watching, listening even smelling instead of just looking at the
pictures in books.
Some people don’t think animals feel happy in the zoos. Animals like pandas, wolves and
bears usually live in the wild. They play and find food by themselves. They are free and happy in
the wild. If they are in the zoos, food is enough and rooms are comfortable. They needn’t do their
best to find food to eat or places to stay in. They just walk around, sleep day and night, but they
are not free at all.
I think we should build national parks as wild life nature reserves to protect animals. If we do
nothing, the number of wild animals will be much smaller.

A report in a newspaper says that school accidents, such as food poisoning (食物中毒), fires,
electricity and traffic, kill more primary and middle school students than anything else. So we must learn how to protect ourselves better. Here are some tips for keeping safety in mind every
day.
On our way home or to school: Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right before
we cross the road. We’d better wear bright-color clothes, so the drivers can see us easily. Don’t
believe strange people in the street.
At school: When students around us begin to push each other, we need to stand still and try
to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If we fall down in a moving
crowd, use both hands to cover the head. Lean to one side, curl up (蜷缩) our body and bend (使
弯曲) the legs.
In a fire: Stay calm. Leave the classroom quickly under the directions of the teachers. Smoke
can be more dangerous than fire, so use a piece of cloth to cover our mouth and nose. What will
we do if the clothes burn? Remember not to run! Drop and fall to the ground. Then roll! It will
make the fire go out.
For eating: Wash fruits carefully before eating them. Check the expiration dates (保质期) on
the packages of the snacks, and if it looks or smells bad, don’t eat it.

As you know, homework is a big part of going to school. Luckily, here are several suggestions
for you to make homework easy.
Make a homework plan
Most middle school students have two or three hours of homework a night. If it is a heavy
homework day, you may need to spend even more time. It is a good idea to come up with some
kind of homework schedule(进度表), especially if you are going to do sports or other activities
after school.
Watch where you work
A bedroom, study or any room where you can get away from noise is good for you to do your
homework. But don't study on your comfortable bed, or you might fall asleep there.
Take a break
Most people's attention (注意力) don't last very long, so take some breaks while doing your
homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive(多产的) than if
you stop to take a break regularly. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good way for most
people.
Get help when you need it
Sometimes even though you are listening carefully in class, some subjects seem too hard. The
first person to ask for help is your teacher. He or she may be able to work with you before or after
school and explain things more clearly. Your classmates may also be able to give you a hand.
However, this might not give you the results you want. Lots of people understand something well
but are not able to explain it.

George is a rich man. He likes playing jokes. On Christmas Eve, he wanted to give his
housekeeper Jack a big present.
He told Jack, “There are four bowls of thick soup here. I put two gold coins in one of the
bowls. Dear Jack, let’s see if you’re lucky.”
Jack wanted the gold coins very much, but he was not sure which bowl was the right one. He
began to eat some soup from the first bowl.
Suddenly, he felt the gold coins should be in the second bowl, so he turned to it and had half
the soup.
He then ate half the soup in the third bowl, too. After that he started to get a little worried.
At last, he changed his mind. He ate half of the soup in the fourth bowl with much difficulty
— at this moment Jack was too full to eat any more.
In the end, he didn’t get even one gold coin.

In nearly every language, two words rhyme with each other when they have the same ending
sound, like “think” and “pink”. The last word in each of the lines of a poem does not have to have
a rhyming sound. But many of them do. Two lines of poetry that rhyme with each other at the end
are called a rhyming couplet(对句).
Writing rhyming poetry can be difficult because you need to choose words that not only
rhyme, but have meaning too. Even though some poems are short, you have to think extra long
about which words to choose. Here is an example of a short poem.
He was only a bug, but he was the king.
She smiled at him when he gave her a ring.
He forgot to be careful of one little thing.
His queen was a bee, and she could sting.
If you love singing, it will not be difficult for you to find rhymes in lyrics(歌 词) in both
English and Chinese songs. Rhymes can make the songs sound more beautiful. Sometimes we
may find a song lyric is just a poem. So perhaps we can say a lyricist of songs must be a poet.
57. What does it mean when two words rhyme?
A. They must have the same meaning. B. They must have the same letters.
C. They must have the same sound at the end. D. They must have the same rhyming
couplet.
58. Which two words rhyme with each other in the given short poem?
A. Ring and thing. B. All and ball.
C. Queen and king. D. Singing and dancing.
59. Rhyming poetry is something hard to write because you need to choose .
A. two lines with rhyming B. rhyming words with meaning
C. the same words with rhyming D. two words with the same meaning
60. According to the passage, we can know_________.
A. A lyricist can write beautiful poems
B. We can hardly find rhymes in words of songs
C. Rhyming happens in only English and Chinese
D. The last word in each line of a poem must rhyme with each other
DI’m learning English in the UK where I meet a lot of new friends and eat something delicious.
Hot pot is many Chinese people’s favourite food, including me. After having three days of
hamburgers, sandwiches and potatoes in the UK, How excited I was to know that there was going
to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen, I seemed to
smell the hot pot in the air.
To my surprise, when I stepped into the room, in front of me were still potatoes and bread.
Where was the hot pot?
With many questions in my head, I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with a French
girl, I got to know that hot pot is completely different from hotpot. Chinese hot pot is written in

Hotpot is made from mutton(羊肉) and onion(洋葱). On the top there are sliced potatoes.
People put it in the oven(炉子) all day in a heavy pot and on a low heat. You can often see it at
parties in the UK because it’s easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive.
Hotpot doesn’t taste bad. However, I still miss hot pot, two words!

Patrick never did homework. "Too boring," he said. He played baseball and basketball. His
teachers told him, "Patrick! Do your homework or you won't learn a thing" And it's true, but what
could he do? He hated homework.
Then one day, his cat was playing with a little doll and he caught the doll and took it away. To
his surprise,it wasn't a doll at all, but a man of the smallest size, a little elf(小精灵).He cried,
"Save me! Don't give me back to that cat. I'll help you to realize your dream."Patrick couldn't believe how lucky he was! So he said, "Only if you do all my homework till
the end of the term and help me get A's." The little man had to say," Oh, I'll do it." But he didn't
always know what to do and he needed help. "Help me! Help me!" he'd say. And Patrick would
have to help -- in whatever way.
"I don't know this word," the elf said while reading Patrick's homework, "Look up the word
and sound it out by each letter."
When it came to math, Patrick was out of luck. "What are times tables?" The elf asked. "We
elves never need that. Here, sit down beside me, you simply must teach me."
Elves know nothing of human history. So the little elf just shouted "Go to the library.I need
books. And you can help me read them too."
So Patrick was working harder than ever! He was staying up nights, and he had never felt so
tired before. Finally the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go. Patrick got his A's;
his classmates were very surprised; his teachers smiled. And his parents? They wondered what
had happened to Patrick. He was now the model kid. Cleaned his room, did his chores, was
cheerful, never rude…
You see, in the end Patrick still thought he'd made that little man do all his homework.
54. Patrick didn’t do his homework because_________.
A. someone would help him. B. he liked playing baseball and
basketball.

CCats are wonderful pets and if you are like me, you probably enjoy having at least one cat in
your home at all times. While cats are very common around the world, you may find that there is
still a lot that we don’t know about them!
Like humans (人类), cats lose their baby teeth, too! The loss of baby teeth is different for
each pet but normally starts around 3 months of age and ends at around 6 or 9 months. If your pet
doesn’t lose their baby teeth, they should be taken away to prevent any future illness. By taking
away the baby teeth, it will allow the adult (成年的) teeth to grow in properly.
When a cat brings you a mouse it means he likes you! A lot of cat owners will be unhappy
when a cat brings a mouse into the house. However, it actually is a sign of love towards his
owners. Since cats can’t talk, they have to show us in the only way they know how… which is by
bringing us a gift, in this case a mouse. Cats don’t understand the way that humans do, so if you
shout at your cat for bringing in a mouse, you’re most likely going to hurt his feelings instead of
teaching him a lesson. Instead, while the cat is looking, pick the mouse up and put it by the
rubbish bin on the floor. After a while the cat will think that is where you prefer (like … better)
his ‘gifts’ to be placed.
Cats have extraordinary eyes! The reason that cats can get around so well at night is because
they see just as clearly in the dark, as humans do in the daytime. To see properly at night a cat
only needs one sixth of the light that humans need. This explains how my cats can run around like
crazy in the middle of the night and somehow not run into anything.
58. If the pet cat doesn’t lose his baby teeth, he may .
A. have future illness B. get adult teeth
C. prevent future illness D. break adult teeth
59. The writer tells us when a cat brings a mouse into the house in Para 3.
A. what a pet cat can eat B. why a pet cat likes mice
C. what the cat owner should do D. why the cat owner is unhappy
60. Cats have extraordinary eyes! That is to say, cats have eyes!
A. beautiful B. brown C. strange D. unusual
61. The writer wants to tell us in the passage.
A. the way to look after the pet cat B. some surprising facts about cats
C. the way to show love in the cat world D. some interesting stories about cats

I don't like vacations with hotels, beaches, and swimming pools, and I’m not interested in visiting old cities. I'd like to do something exciting, and nowadays lots of vacations offer
excitement: I could visit Australia and swim with dolphins.
But when I choose a vacation I always have the same problem: I don't want to go somewhere
and see lots of other tourists. I want to be the only person there. The problem is that there are
other tourists everywhere these days. Is there anywhere in the world without people?
What about Antarctica(南极洲)? It's a huge, beautiful continent. Between 1.000 and 5,000
scientists work there, but nobody lives there. There are no cities so there's no pollution(污染) or
traffic, and it has lots of nature and wildlife. It sounds perfect!
Actually, there are also tourists in Antarctica. Tourism there began in the late 1950s. About
500 people a year visited from Chile and Argentina. Nowadays, about 50,000 tourists from all
over the world cruise(乘船巡游)there every year, and the number is becoming larger.
So, like everywhere else with tourists, Antarctica is changing. You can't stay overnight, but
you can visit
Wildlife areas. Some people think the numbers of wild animals and birds are becoming smaller as
a result. However, there is also some positive news. Many cruise ships teach their passengers
about Antarctica and its wildlife .The cruise companies also give money to environmental
organizations(环保组织) in the region. These organizations want to help the nature and wildlife
of Antarctica so it doesn't change in the future.
So what should I do? Go to Antarctica, go somewhere else or stay at home?
62. The writer likes to to enjoy his vacation.
A. go somewhere without people B. visit a city with a long history
C. go to beaches in Australia D. swim with other tourists
63. Now the number of tourists visiting Antarctica is about .
A. 500 B. 1,000 C. 5,000 D. 50,000
64. Which of the following might be from a tourist’s diary about Antarctica?
A. I felt very cold at midnight. B. I saw some wild animals.
C. I enjoyed the beautiful city. D. I got money from the cruise ship.
65. The writer wants to in the passage.
A. introduce tourism in Antarctica B. ask readers to go to Antarctica
C. do something to protect Antarctica D. tell readers how to visit Antarctica

What's a day in your life like today? You go to school and do your homework, right? At home
you probably do a few simple chores, like washing the dishes or making your bed. You might

Their parents taught them what they knew, but very few adults (成年人)could read or write.
The Aztec people, who lived from 1200 to 1473 in present-day Mexico, were special. The Aztecs
believed that education, or learning, was important. Every child went to school, although boys and
girls learned different things.
In the nineteenth century, many people began moving into cities to find jobs . In cities there
was no longer a need to have children work on the farm. So instead they began working in
factories. In England many children worked long hours six days a week. And they earned(挣)as
little as a penny a day-that's less than fifty cents in today' money! Children started working from a
very young age, sometimes at only five or six years old. They gave all of their money to their
parents to help pay for the family's needs.
Today most children go to school. Sometimes teenagers work part-time jobs to earn money.
But many use that money for enjoyment, not to help their families. Think about it! Even if(即使)
you work and go to school, you still have time to relax or hang out with your friends. Next to your
peers(同龄人)from the past, you have it pretty easy!
54. The underlined word "they" in paragraph 2 refers to______________.
A. teachers B. children C. The Aztec people D. parents
55. According to the passage, what did children do with the money they made?
A. They bought anything they liked. B. They paid for their school's needs.
C. They helped to support their families. D. They did something to make
themselves happy.
56. What can we infer(推断)from the last paragraph?
A. Today teenagers should have more to complain about.
B. Today teenagers should love their lives and complain less.
C. Today teenagers should often have a good time with their friends.
D. Today teenagers should use that money they earned to help their families.
57. The passage mainly tells us that_____________________.

I strongly believe that we can have an important effect(影响) on anyone we meet. The right
words at just the right time could totally change someone’s life.
Years ago, that’s what happened to me. My life was completely changed because a simple
three-word phrase was delivered(发出) at the right time in just the right way.
When I was 3 years old, my parents discovered I was deaf. After asking many doctors and
parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me in a normal school. On my first day at
school, the other kids made fun of me because of my hearing aid (助听器) and the way I talked. I
was hurt deeply and I saw myself as an ugly kid. Mrs. Green, my teacher, changed all of that with
a simple three-word phrase. One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips(嘴唇)
and raised my hand right away. She called on me in front of the blackboard. I took a deep breath
and nervously answered Mrs. Green’s question.
I will never forget what happened next. Mrs. Green pointed directly at me. With a big smile
she cried: “That’s right, Ben!” For the first time in my young life, my confidence(自信) rose.
At that moment, I decided that no matter how many difficulties I may face, I can
overcome(克服) them. Thanks to those three simple words, my whole life changed from that
moment.

It is a cold and dry winter morning. When you wake up, you feel that your throat hurts. You
begin to sneeze and later you may cough. You must have a cold! Wait a moment. Could it just be
a common cold or the flu (流感) that’s been going around?
A cold gives you a runny nose and cough. But it’s usually easy to deal with. Some take
medicine while others drink herbal (药草的) tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a
week.
On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you fever. Sometimes
it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million
people from 1918 to 1919.
Don’t worry. If you get a flu vaccine (疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus (病毒). Flu
vaccines work by giving the body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop
antibodies (抗体). So next time you get the flu, the antibodies should help you.
The flu virus changes every few years. So there are so many types of flu, such as H1N1 and
H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu can’t help us against all types of flu. That’s why we
need to get the vaccine every year.
However, good health habits may also help stop you developing a cold or flu. Washing your
hands often helps stop you from getting viruses. It is also important to get regular exercise and eat
healthy food. All these can help you strengthen your immune system (增强免疫系统). 62. If you have a common cold, usually you’ll feel better after ______ days.
A. 7 B. 10 C. 15 D. 20
63. What does the underlined “it” refer to?
A. A flu virus. B. A flu vaccine. C. Herbal tea. D. Chicken soup.
64. We need to get a flu vaccine every year because ______.
A. the flu is very dangerous
B. we probably have a cold in winter
C. the flu virus changes every few years
D. you don’t need to take any medicine after that
65. The following ways can help stop the flu EXCEPT ______.
A. staying indoors B. getting regular exercise
C. eating healthy food D. washing our hands often

Using iPads to Make Learning Fun
Paper, pencil, whiteboard, textbook are the tools you need if you want to go to school. But
recently, you can add another one to the list: an iPad.
Because the popular Apple tablet is not only useful for searching the Internet and watching
videos, but it is also being used to make learning fun.
Scientists now know that we learn better when we are enjoying ourselves, so recently software
developers have made iPad applications(应用程序) that look like video games, but have strong
educational content. One of the best examples of this new form of teaching application is
Futaba, game in which up to four children try to recognize a spinning(旋转的)object, and then
identify what it is. The game can be used to teach English, math, foreign languages, or just about
anything and students love it. Teachers can even make their own questions. The important thing

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

To ask if there is some mistake.

When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the
newspapers reported many stories about some of the families in trouble.

clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins,

she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. “Oh,
dear” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much. ”Meghan said, “Lucy makes
me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too. ” I looked at Meghan for a
