The living environment of the polar bears is worsening so rapidly that they have to struggle for food to survive. Therefore, everyone in the world, like me, is greatly concerned about what the future holds for us human beings. Undoubtedly, it’s high time that all the countries, especially the developed ones, should shoulder the responsibilities to take more effective measures to save our planet, our animal neighbors and our coming generations . Best wishes for you. Will you join us? M: Well, I’ve promised to meet my foreign teacher, for I need guidance and more practice for English Speech Competition next Monday. Text 2 M: You used to live in America before coming to Australia. Is that right? W: Not exactly. I was born in Canada and grew up there. Text 3 W: Frank, it’s 11:30 o’clock. Are you supposed to meet your friend for lunch at 12? M: Yeah, but he called he would be half an hour later than the fixed time. Text 4 W: I’ve learned that you’ve bought War Craft 2. M: Yeah, so many new characters and fantastic sound in the game! I’m addicted to it. Text 5 W: You know, Taylor’s been in hospital for a couple of days. M: Well, I’m the one who put him there with my football moves. I will visit him this afternoon after work. Text 6 M: I’d like to see more of London’s streets. W: That’s a good idea. Walk along the River Thames, and you will see the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and Tower Bridge. You can take pictures with these places in the background. M: Oh, great. I also want to see something special. W: What do you mean? Maybe, the typical British phone booths or the red buses? M: Yeah, but I want to see some street paintings most. W: Oh, really? They are part of London’s street culture. M: I have been very interested in them since I saw them in the movie Sherlock. Could you suggest some places? W: Yeah, I will be your guide. Let’s go now. Text 7 W: I hear you are expecting your family. M: Yes, my parents, and soon my brother as well. W: I didn’t know you had a brother. M: Oh, yes, he is two years older than me. He lives in New Zealand, so I don’t see him that often. W: Oh, nice. Is he coming on his own or with the family? M: His son, Tony, is coming as well. He wants to go to university here in England so they will visit a few universities while they are here. His two daughters and wife are visiting her parents in Sweden. W: I’m sure your parents are looking forward to seeing their grandson. M: Oh yes, they are really looking forward to it. Text 8 W: How is your university life? M: Wonderful. I joined the Student Union and made many friends. Last Sunday, I went for a picnic with my classmates. Oh, what about your life at Yale University? Anything interesting? W: Yeah. Every Friday, we have “happy hour”. We can drink and eat free in the dinning hall. M: Oh, really? W: Yeah. Many people chat and laugh. Sometimes, some professors may also show up. M: Great fun. Any other interesting things? W: Let me see. Last Sunday, I was invited to a professor’s house. M: It seems you keep good relationship with teachers. W: Yeah. At Yale, it’s common for teachers to invite students to their houses. M: It’s amazing. I also want to go to Yale after graduation. Text 9 W: I’m determined to have a job as a repair woman. M: It’s a man’s job. Oh, I get it. You want to do that because of your new boyfriend, James. W: No. I really enjoy working on cars. Besides, James doesn’t work at a garage any more. But he really liked his job because he learned how to find problems and fix things. And James is now back in college. He’s majoring in nursing. M: Nursing? That’s a woman’s job. W: Nurses, whether they are men or women, care for the sick, the elderly. And are you saying that women can’t be farmers, carpenters, or truck drivers? M: Well, I just think that women are more suitable for secretaries, waitresses, piano teachers. W: Man, you’re stuck in the 18th century. No one will marry you. M: Oh, well, just forget this. I’m having a problem with my car. I was wondering if James could take a look at it. W: Forget it. Start pushing! Text 10 I have developed a habit of collecting rubbish such as old toys, used things, broken furniture. What other people see as garbage, I see as potential art. Of course, it’s not art in the state I find it. The process I go through from the raw materials to a finished piece is not complex at all. First, I take the collected rubbish to my studio and play around with different combinations to see if I can find some inspiration. I do this for a few days or a week before I have an idea about what I want to create. The pieces I create are mostly animal sculptures. A few times a year I get invited to display my favorite sculptures at exhibitions. I also create more practical, usable art. Some examples include vases made from glass bottles, lamps made from irons or blow dryers, and pencil boxes made from plastic containers. I take these items to the local market and sell them.
