Tablets are really useful devices (设备),but their big screens are always a burden
to carry around. Wouldn't it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet
that could be folded up and fit neatly into the hand?
Now something like a tabletshaped but foldable phone is about to become
available. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China's
Huawei both launched foldable phones. Mobile phone use has entered the “foldable
future”.
The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to
their bendable screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit
easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they're “the combination of a small tablet
and smartphone, all in a single device”.
The technology could change other devices too. For example, we could make TVs
that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded
modern cities, they will help us to maximize available space.
Samsung's senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison,
called the foldable screen “the foundation for the smartphone of tomorrow”. “It's a
blank canvas (画布)for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.
So is there nothing to stand in the way of the foldable future?According to tech
news website Android Authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In
2012, nine out of every ten OLED (有机发光二极管)screens produced were found
imperfect. While it has been improved today, the price is still too high for people to
afford.
But if the foldable device isn' t going to change the world overnight, there is no
doubt that it is coming. Patrick Moorhead, an industry analyst told The verge, “Few are
debating if foldable or rollable mobile displays are the future of smartphones; the only
question is when and by whom.”

Selfdriving vehicles will rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence(AI) to
recognize and respond to road and traffic conditions, but sensing is the most effective
for objects and movement in the neighborhood of the vehicle. Not everything important
in a car's environment will be caught by the vehicle's camera.Another vehicle
approaching at high speed on a collision (碰撞) track might not be visible until it's too
late. This is why vehicletovehicle communication is undergoing rapid development.
Our research shows that cars will need to be able to chat and cooperate on the road,
although the technical challenges are considerable.
Applications for vehicletovehicle communication range from vehicles driving
together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles. Vehicles could
alert each other to avoid collisions or share notices about passersby and bicycles.
From as far as several hundred metres away, vehicles could exchange messages
with one another or receive information from roadside units(RSUs)about nearby
incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G network. A high level of AI seems required for such vehicles, not only to selfdrive from A to B, but also to react
intelligently to messages received. Vehicles will need to plan, reason, strategize and
adapt according to information received in real time and to carry out cooperative
behaviours. For example, a group of autonomous vehicles might avoid a route together
because of potential risks, or a vehicle could decide to drop someone off earlier due to
messages received, a foreseen crowding ahead.
Further applications of vehicletovehicle communication are still being
researched, including how to perform cooperative behaviour.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The reasons for the accidents by selfdriving vehicles.
B.The research about applications for selfdriving vehicles.

D.The reasons for developing communication between selfdriving vehicles.
9. What does the underlined word “alert” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Alarm. B.Condemn.
C.Ignore. D.Govern.
10. What can we learn about roadside units(RSUs)?
A.They classify the vehicles on the road.
B.They can improve bad road conditions.
C.They take over the passing vehicles.
D.They serve as efficient information stations.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A.When do vehicles communicate?
B.The reasons why a high level of AI is important.
C.Vehicletovehicle communication is coming.
D.What do applications for vehicletovehicle communication need?
