BI suppose it started when a private message appeared in my Facebook Messenger inbox. It was
from a woman I met briefly through a friend. It said: "Hey, girlfriend. Want to invite you to join my
next challenge group-we'll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise, balanced nutrition and
motivation. Let me help you reach your goals!”
I laughed it off and closed my browser(浏览器)but the meaning behind the message stuck with
me all day. The more the days went on, the heavier her message weighed on me. The insecurity
about my body was brought to life by one little Facebook message. That got me thinking about
social media in general and how it took up too much of my time.
I tried to remember what life was like without Facebook. Surfing the Internet was an occasional
distraction(分心)and I spent a lot more time reading. I printed out photos and put them in albums.
Checking in with friends happened through texts, e-mails or phone calls. Was life easier then than it
is now? In an effort to both recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example for my
son, I closed my Facebook account.
I felt lost at first. However, leaving Facebook left my mind quiet enough to remember a few
important things. My body is fine just the way it is: Though fat, I am healthy. My close friends will
text or call me if they are struggling. Our happy moments as a family were strengthened because I
was completely present and the break left me feeling better about myself, my family and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. I looked in on a daily hams, but only once with little
desire to post as much as I once did. Facebook is not an addiction any more.

A recent study shows that the widespread idea that children have different learning styles is of
little benefit to children's learning.
The researchers made a questionnaire about people's attitudes towards learning styles. Over 90
percent of participants said they believed in various learning styles. They agreed that some kids pick
up information better when it's presented visually, but others physically or by listening. And around
half of the people tested said they believed that we are horn with learning styles that can easily he
identified and passed down from parents. Despite the long-standing theory, there is no evidence to
suggest tailoring a person's learning experience to their self-reported learning style helps them to
pick up information, the study found.
Shaylene Nancekivell, a researcher of the study, told Newsweek: “I am very concerned that
parent; and educators may he wasting money and time using ineffective learning tools. The
popularity of the wrong idea about learning styles means that it is very easy to spend money and
time on programs that may not be helping children learn.”
Professor Paul Kirschner told Newsweek: “The real problem is that the theory of learning styles
robs children of opportunities to learn by branding them as belonging to a specific group that cannot
do certain things. It's also a good excuse for parents to blame teachers and schools for their children's
poor study habits and for schools and teachers to blame makers of learning materials.”
Asked to comment on the limitations of the new study, Dr. Angel Urbina-Garcia, a lecturer at
the U. K. 's University of Hull who was not involved in the research, told Newsweek: "It is a good
study although not outstanding given the small sample(样本)."

A. They have been formed since born. B. They can help predict a child's future.
C. They can be passed down from parents. D. They differ from person to person.
29. What is Shaylene Nancekivell concerned about?
A. The waste of money and time on improper learning tools.
B. The education level of parents and educators.
C. The beliefs of participants about learning styles.
D. The degree of students' academic devotion.
30. Why does the new study have its limitation?A. People are paid to collect information. B. Only male volunteers answer the questionnaire.
C. Not many participants are interviewed. D. Age is not considered in the study.
31. What's the main idea of the text?
A. Classifying children to groups may undervalue their abilities.
B. The theory of learning styles doesn't help children learn.
C. Scientists suggest adjusting teaching methods to learning styles.
D. Children get into bad study habits because of learning styles.

Most dog owner; are convinced that their four-legged friends know exactly what they mean
when they use certain words. However, researchers have always wondered whether they really
understand human speech or if they rely on other ways to know the meaning. A new study by
scientists at Atlanta's Emory University seems to indicate that "man's beat friend" does know what
the owner is saying.
To get data from the dogs themselves-not just the reports from their owners, the researchers
asked the owners of twelve dogs to train their pets to identify two toys with different materials by
name. Once the dogs had mastered the task, they took turns inside an MRI(磁共振成像仪). The
owners then tested their dogs by first calling out the names of the toys they had been trained to
recognize and then saying meaningless words such as "bobbu" and "bodmick" while holding up
random objects the dogs hadn't seen before.
The MRI scans showed that certain areas of the dogs' brains showed different brain patterns
when they heard words they were familiar with, compared with the ones they had never heard
before. While not enough to prove that the dogs were picturing their toys when they heard the word,
it did indicate some sort of recognition. 'Me researchers believe this is an important step forward in
understanding how dogs process language.
Even more interesting was that the dog's brains showed a higher level of neural(神经的)activity
at the sound of unknown words. Ibis is the exact opposite of what happens in human brains, which
get more active at the sound of familiar words. The researchers assume the dogs may perk up at the
sound of new words to try to understand them in the hope of delighting their masters.
"When teaching their dog a trick, people often use words because that's what we humans
prefer," Prichard, the writer of the study, says. "From the dog's view, however, a visual command might he more effective, helping the dog learn the trick faster.”
32. What should dog owners do in the experiments?
A. Take turns to train dogs. B. Train dogs to recognize toys.
C. Teach dogs meaningless words. D. Get dogs excited using commands.
33. What does the underlined phrase "perk up" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Become active. B. Get tired. C. Feel satisfied. D. Look surprised.

B. Teaching dogs with toys is more effective.

D. Training dogs with visual orders is a good way.
35. What can he the best title for the text?
