First, be sure to dress properly for the position. However, you don’t want to overdress for the interview either. Second, be sure to do some research on the company for which you are interviewing. This will help you know if you have the needed skills or experience to work for that company. Finding out something about the company will also help you ask clever questions about their business to show them that you are interested in their company. Finally, be prepared to tell them why you would be their best choice for the position. You don’t have to boast about your abilities and skills, but you can tell them in a confident and direct way why you can help their company better than other applicants. A So you want to figure out who moved your cheese, or just learn some spiritual laws of success. She wished that he was as easy to please as her mother, who was always delighted with perfume. Besides shopping at this time of the year was a most disagreeable experience: people trod (踩) on your toes, poked (捅) you with their elbows and almost knocked you over in their haste to get to a bargain ahead of you. Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter where some attractive ,ties were on display. “They are real silk,” the assistant assured her, trying to tempt her. “Worth double the price.” But Edith knew from past experience that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father. She moved on reluctantly and then quite by chance, stopped where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some good quality pipes on sale—and the prices were very reasonable. Edith did not hesitate for long: although her father only smoked a pipe occasionally, she knew that this was a present which was bound to please him. When she got home, with her small well-chosen present concealed in her handbag, her parents were already at the supper table. Her mother was in an especially cheerful mood, “Your father has at last decided to stop smoking.” She informed her daughter. 24. Why was shopping very disagreeable at that time of the year? A. Because some customers trod on others’ toe. 25. What do we know about Edith’s father? A. He did not like presents. B. He never got presents. C. He preferred ties. D. It was difficult to choose a present for him. 26. How did Edith come to the next counter? A. Purposely. B. Happily. C. Accidentally. D. Unwillingly. 27. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be. Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A previous research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrates on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app. Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some contents are available for free while some contents are not, We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Females tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users. Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful, this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not explain why the answer is right or wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly rated. More than 92% of the people state that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning. Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication. 28. Why weren’t the results of the former research always dependable? A. Because it used out-of-date methods. B. Because it just focused on positive results. C. Because it was only carried out before class. D. Because it only considered users of a limited type. 29. What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text? A. All the contents are free to use. B. It’s used by more advanced learners. C. Most users consider it satisfying. D. It’s more popular with female learners. 30. Which of the following can probably replace the underlined word address? A. Deal with. B. Write down. C. Turn to. D. Speak of. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. Students won’t suffer anxiety in learning languages by using Busuu. B. Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners. C. Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers. D. Students should be required to use apps for homework after class. D 29. C 30. A 31. 根据文章第二自然段中的“But it mainly concentrates on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable.”(但是,软件指关注注册语言学习的学 习者,并且只是作为课后的一种辅助,因此结果并不总是可靠的。) 根据文章第五自然“More than 92% of the people state that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.” C. Most users consider it satisfying.(大多数使用者认为它是令人满 意地)符合以上数据综合的结果。 Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. 故选 A 项。 Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar.(语言学习 app 目前很受欢迎, 它们可以提供学习词汇和练习语法的机会)倒数第二段的 More than 92% of the people state that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.(超过 92%的 人说这个 app 满足他们的期待,86%的人认为它好或者很好。 B. But can artificial intelligence (AI) machines act ethically—can they be honest and fair? One example of AI is driverless cars. They are already on California roads, so it is not too soon to ask whether we can program a machine to act ethically. As driverless cars improve, they will save lives. They will make fewer mistakes than human drivers do. Sometimes, however, they will face a choice between lives. Should the cars be programmed to avoid hitting a child running across the road, even if that will put their passengers at risk? What about making a sudden turn to avoid a dog? What if the only risk is damage to the car itself, no to the passengers? Perhaps there will be lessons to learn from driverless cars, but they are not super-intelliger beings. Teaching ethics to a machine even more intelligent than we are will be the bigger challenge. About the same time as AlphaGo’s victory, Microsoft’s ‘chatbot’ took a bad turn. The software, named Taylor, was designed to answer messages from people aged 18-24. Taylor was supposed to be able to learn from the messages she received. She was designed to slowly improve her ability to handle conversations, but some people were teaching Taylor racist ideas. When she started saying nice things about Hitler, Microsoft turned her off and deleted her ugliest messages. Alpha Go’s victory and Taylor’s defeat happened at about the same time. This should be a warning to us. It is one thing to use AI within a game with clear rules and clear goals. It is something very different to use AI in the real world. The unpredictability of the real world may bring to the surface a troubling software problem. Eric Schmidt is one of the bosses of Google, which own AlphaGo. He thinks AI will be positive for humans. He said people will be the winner, whatever the outcome. Advances in AI will make human beings smarter, more able and “just better human beings.” 32. What does the author want to show with the example of AlphaGo’s victory? A. Computers will win human beings. B. Computers have unmatched potential. C. Computers are man’s potential opponents (对手). D. Computers can become highly intelligent. 33. What is said to be the bigger challenge facing humans in the AI age? A. How to make super-intelligent AI machines share human feelings. B. How to ensure that super-intelligent AI machines act ethically. C. How to prevent AI machines doing harm to humans. D. How to avoid being over-dependent on AI machines. 34. What do we learn about Microsoft’s ‘chatbot’ Taylor? A. She could not distinguish good from bad. B. She could turn herself off when necessary. C. She was not made to handle strange situations.D. She was good at performing routine tasks. 35. What does Eric Schmidt think of artificial intelligence? A. It will be far superior to human beings. B. It will keep improving as time goes by. C. It will prove to be valuable to human beings. D. It will be here to stay whatever the outcome. 32. D 33. B 34. A 35. When she started saying nice things about Hitler,”(她的设计目标是慢慢提高交流能力,但有人 却教她种族思想,然后她开始说希特勒好话)可知,Taylor 区分不清善与恶。故选 A 项。 When I received my admission decision for Middlebury, my mouth dropped open in genuine (真的) shock. ____36____ Feeling unprepared, I was considering taking a gap year.
