The 75-year-old lived very happily in a village and had a beautiful family. Joe had four grandchildren, and they visited him during their holidays. During one vacation, Joe was preparing his home for the kids: cleaning and buying their favorite foods. After he finished working, he realized he lost his favourite watch. The watch was a gift from his wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. He was very upset about losing it. Once his grandchildren came, they promised him they would find the watch. One granddaughter asked: “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?” “I guess when I was cleaning the barn(谷仓)!” Joe replied. The children looked for more than two hours with Joe, but they could not find it. The kids were now also sad, but they tried to comfort(安慰) their grandfather. One grandson went back to the barn to search again. Joe asked why he was going there a second time. But the little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to remain silent. He was there for about fifteen minutes and then rushed to his grandfather. He found the watch and happily gave it to Joe. Joe was surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied: “I sat there without making a noise, and the barn was so silent. After a few minutes, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound and found the watch.” Joe hugged and thanked the little boy. This is the power of silence. Silence sometimes is more powerful than using your voice. B It’s always a happy moment when you get some pocket money. But have you ever thought about how to spend your pocket money wisely? Here is some advice. Make a list. When you get your pocket money, don’t get too excited. We all have a lot of things that we want. But do you really need them? That’s why it is necessary to make a list before you spend money. Start with the thing you want most. You can also write down how much it costs or how important it is in your life. By doing this, you will see if it is really necessary to buy it. Help others. How about being more selfless and using your pocket money to help others? We all know that there are many people in the world who are in need of our help. Helping others brings out the best in us and is one of the greatest joys in our lives. So consider using your pocket money to do something useful and helpful, and feel how you can make a difference. Save as much as you can. There is an old saying that “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” If you spend all your pocket money right away, you’ll have no money until your next “pay day”. A wallet sometimes might not be the best place to save money because it may make it easier for you to spend your money. Get a piggy bank or ask your parents to start a savings account (账户) for you. Someday when you look back, you’ll get a strong feeling of achievement by saving so much money by yourself! 36. Why should we make a list before spending money? A. Because it can help us buy things that we want most. B. Because it can make sure we buy everything we need. C. Because it can help us know which thing is the most expensive. D. Because it can help us know if we have enough money for the things. 37. What does the underlined sentence “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” mean? A. Money doesn’t come easily. B. Money is as important as trees. C. One can make money by growing trees. D. We should use our money to protect the environment. 38. How to save pocket money B. How to get pocket money C. How to spend pocket money D. How to help others with pocket money C Violence (暴力) at schools has been widely reported in recent years. Hitting, slapping (打耳光) and burning others with cigarettes-the violence among teenagers has drawn public and government attention. On Nov 11, the government published a guideline (指导意见) on dealing with school violence. The guideline stressed that students with serious behaviour problems should be taken to special schools. Or, in more serious cases, they may take criminal responsibility (刑事责任) and be sent to prison. China has long been considered as too soft on teen offenders (犯事者), according to the People website. Criminal responsibility begins at the age of 14. Offenders under the age of 16 do not face serious punishment unless they do eight types of “serious” crimes such as murder. This might partly explain why junior middle school students are the most common offenders in school violence cases. It’s reported that they take up 33.96 percent of the total while high school students take up 22.64 percent. “What also shocked us is how cruel (残忍的) some young offenders can be,” said Shi Weizhong. In school violence cases in Beijing during the last five years, 14 percent of the offenders not only beat others, but also insulted (侮辱) them. They slapped others, made them kneel down (下 跪), and in some cases took off other people’s clothes. “The common tolerant (容忍的) attitude toward violence should be changed,” wrote Jiaxing Daily. “When teenagers do something wrong, we should tolerate and help them when necessary. But all of this has a limit.” 41. What is the guideline about? A. How to deal with school violence. B. How students improve in studies. C. How students get along with each other. D. How to make students behave well. 42. Who should be criminally responsible? A. An 11-year-old. B. A 12-year-old. C. A 13-year-old. D. A 14-year-old. 43. Junior middle school students are the most common offenders in school violence cases possibly because ____. A. there are not many special schools in China B. China has been too soft on teen offenders C. teachers in junior middle schools are not strict with them D. they know less on laws than high school students do 44. What does the underlined word “shocked” mean in Paragraph 5? A. excited B. interested C. pleased D. surprised45. Which of the following is Jiaxing Daily’s opinion? A. We’d better patiently teach young offenders. B. Young people need to learn to be tolerant. C. We should tolerate school violence but there is a limit. D. Teenagers should not do anything wrong. 第二部分 非选择题部分 四、阅读表达 (no more than 5 words) Your smartphone may seem like the centre of your entertainment(娱乐), but a Kent State University study shows that too much phone use is taking the fun right out of our spare time. On October 5, Tu got the award of the 2015 Noble Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She shared it with two other scientists from the US and Japan. Tu used to take the medicine herself to test medicines. To do research, Tu also had to move around a lot. Once she returned home after traveling for six months. Her little daughter didn’t recognize her and hid from the “strange woman ”. Finally , Tu found artemisinin (青蒿素) in sweet wormwood in 1971. On Nov 11, the government published a guideline (指导意见) on dealing with school violence. The guideline stressed that students with serious behaviour problems should be taken to special schools. Criminal responsibility begins at the age of 14. Offenders under the age of 16 do not face serious punishment unless they do eight types of “serious” crimes such as murder.
