It was her son’s first day of second grade, and April Crites worried, because Conner’s
autism (自闭症) sometimes makes him over stimulated (刺激). 8-year-old Conner was
waiting for the doors to open at his school on August 14 when he started to cry since the
sights and sounds of the first day of school had been stressful for him.
Children with autism act differently from one another, with some able to talk while
others not, some uncomfortable with noises, and still some having trouble looking other
people in the eye.
While Conner stood alone in a corner crying, his classmate Christian had a glance at
him, reached over, and held his hand instead of overlooking him like most kids, and that
made him feel better.
Christian’s mom, Courtney, happened to take a photo of the act of kindness when
Christian walked Conner into their school. She shared the photo and wrote in a
Facebook post, “It is an honor to raise such a loving, compassionate (有同情心的) child!
The first day of school started off right.”
When Conner came home that afternoon, he told Crites that he had an easy first day
and he liked his classmates and his teacher, without mentioning that he had gotten upset
at the start of the day. Crites didn’t know about her son’s interaction ( 互 动 ) with
Christian until she saw the photo in Facebook a few days later.
The boys study in the same class, but they didn’t know each other well. Now Conner
and Christian sit together at lunch and play together at breaks. Christian went to the
Crites’ house one weekend, and the pair played for a day without an argument, which,
Crites said, is unusual for her son.
The Crites family has been touched by the photo. Conner got excited when his
classmates told him they saw his picture on TV. According to Crites, her husband, who
rarely cries, had tears in his eyes on seeing the photo.
Everyone is struggling with something that might be invisible ( 看 不 见 的 ) to those
around them, which makes it more important to show kindness.

A Scottish artist has been owed increasing the fortunes of the global pencil industry to
after the surprise success of her “coloring-in” books for grown-ups.
Johanna Basford’s books of wonderful fill-in drawings have met a huge demand from
those seeking to switch off from iPads, laptops and computer games. Now, having
already topped the Amazon best-seller lists, her works are also giving a great increase in
global sales for high-quality pencils, as coloring-in fans compete to make masterpieces
of their own.
Far from being free of the digital age, pencil manufacturers are now struggling to
cope with demand, with Faber Castell, the world’s largest wood pencil manufacturer,
revealing that it was now having to run extra shifts (轮班) at its factories.
“People like coloring-in because they are fed up with digital,” Ms Basford told “The
Sunday Telegraph”. “There is something nice about picking up a pencil and a pen.
You are not going to get interrupted by Twitter, and there are also childhood
memories in it. The last time you did a bit of coloring in, you probably weren’t about
thinking about things that trouble you.”Rather like other recent middle-class crazes like
home-baking, coloring-in appeals to nostalgia (怀旧感).
However, while it might be healthier than rushing in a home-made cake competition
inspired by the Great British Bake Off, there is still a guilty pleasure to it, for not
everyone approves of university-educated adults dedicating their spare hours to a
“coloring-in” book that, in the view of critics anyway, ranks somewhere below puzzler
books.
Leading the chorus of disapproval is comedian Russell Brand, who produced a recent
sketch ( 素 描 ) entitled “Adult Coloring Books: Is This the Apocalypse ( 大 灾 难 )?”
“What has turned us into terrified kids that want to live in childish stupors (恍惚)?” He
got angry, accusing coloring-in fans of being scared of the modern world.
And what did Ms Basford say about criticizers like Mr Brand?“It’s a case of whatever
makes you happy. There’s no right or wrong about it,” she said. “Who knows, maybe he
just hasn’t found the right coloring-in book yet.”
“Coloring-in” clubs have formed worldwide, meeting in cafes and online to compare
their works, and keeping the lead in the pencil of the industry.
28. Why did people owe the development of the global pencil industry to Johanna Basford?
A. Because Basford made effective advertisements for pencils in her books.
B. Because Basford works for the biggest pencil manufacturer.
C. Because Basford’s books’ hit led to increase in pencil sales.
D. Because Basford became successful by drawing her books with pencils.
29. In the fourth paragraph, MsBasford ____.
A. showed how to use pencils and pens
B. explained why her books won popularity
C. admitted that she involved childhood memories in her books
D. complained that she had a lot of things troubling her
30. The underlined word “it” in the fifth paragraph refers to ____.
A. home-baking
B. coloring-in
C. the “coloring-in” book
D. a guilty pleasure
31. What’s Russell Brand’s attitude towards “coloring-in” books?
A. Negative. B. Supportive.
C. Suspicious. D. Uncertain.

Someone once said, “If all your problems can be solved with money, then you don’t
have any.” Unless you are going to lose everything, your perceptions ( 理 解 )of your
problems may not be serving you well.
Can you pay your living expenses? If so, you are okay. Even if you are a family that
just hardly makes ends meet every month, count that as a blessing. Most of us also have
those over-the-top unexpected bills, but unless you lose your job or your mind, don’t
you always find a way to deal with those expenses?
To see if you worry too much about finances, ask yourself a few questions, such as “Do
you wake up worried about money?” or “Do you check your bank balance and look at
up coming bills more than once every few days or even several times a day?” If so, then
you may have a little financial insecurity going on. Anxiousness is contagious (有感染
力的), so be careful whenever you want to share your financial fears.
TMI (too much information, meaning that you say more than you need to) happens
because it seems to you that by sharing your feelings of anxiety, you will feel better and
hopefully more supported, but not with your loved ones, because they will take on your
fear. Neither is it good for them nor for you yourself to lay your financial fears at the
feet of your family. If you get emotional, so will those closest to you. Talk instead with
your financial advisor or your bank manager.
It’s hard to pay no attention to money, but honestly, it’s really the best way to get this
problem solved. Look closely at the money you own, and decide what the best thing for
you to do with your time right now is. Then again, you may need to hire an accountant
and go on some interviews. The point is simple: the only way to set you free from the
uncomfortable feeling of financial pressure is
to take some kind of positive action.
32. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Financial problems are not key ones in our daily life.
B. You’d better calm down when you have financial problems.
C. You needn’t worry about unexpected bills even if you’re out of work.
D. When you have financial fears, remember to share feelings with others.
33. In the third paragraph, the author tells us a way to tell ____.
A. how often we should check our bills
B. whether we face financial insecurity
C. whether we should worry about money
D. how much we should care about money
34. The phrase “lay your financial fears at the feet of your family” probably means
____.
A. solve financial fears caused by your family
B. help your family smartly avoid financial fears
C. make your family responsible for financial fears
D. encourage your family to solve financial fears on foot
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Money and Its Practical Value
B. Financial Problems and Family Support
C. Balancing Financial Problems and Life
D. Dealing with Money Worries

Getting your kids organized for the new school year
Parents can begin good organization habits with preschool-age children, said Elana
Spira, Ph.D., co-author of The Organized Child. She suggests asking them to do small,
simple actions on a regular basis. Maybe they unpack their backpacks and bring their
lunch bag to the kitchen, or take their shoes off at the door. 36 . Doing small things at a
young age helps children exercise discipline(自律) and attention, all of which they’ll
need later on.
When kids enter elementary school, they’re ready for more responsibility. This is the
time to teach them about daily activities, and help them take control over theirs. 37 .
When do children do their homework? How long do they need? Where do they do it?
Where does the homework go once it is done? Figure it out all before, and keep to the
schedule as much as possible.
As children get older and their schedules get busier, they need their parents’ help in
recognizing priorities(优先处理的事) and understanding what it takes to make it all
work. As with younger children, the goal is to help them figure out what will work for
them — and then help them keep to it.
38 . Julie Morgenstern, organizing and productivity expert, suggests keeping a family
calendar—paper or electronic—and keeping it regularly. Each family member should
have a color belonged to their activities, so it’s easy to see who is doing what,
when.“You can’t expect people to look at the calendar on their own. You should have a
family sit together every day to look at it, and look at three days ahead,” Morgenstern said. “ 39 .”
“Set the child up for success by changing gradually,” Spira advises. “ 40 . Wait until the
child has been consistently successful with one solution, before moving on to the next.”
A. These will help develop good habits
B. You don’t have to solve everything at once
C. It’s better to find any problems days before
D. Children should prepare everything in advance
E. It’s wise to create a firm schedule for homework
F. Calendars are important to help families stay organized
G. Organization gives the children the chance to focus on a task

24. A 。 根 据 第 一 段 “Conner’s autism sometimes makes him
overstimulated.”和第二段“8-year-old Conner was waiting for the doors to open at his
school on August 14when he started to cry since the sights and sounds of the first day
of school had been stressful for him.”
Conner
根据倒数第二段“The Crites family has been touched by the
photo ... had tears in his eyes on seeing the photo.”

根据第三段“To see if you worry too muchabout finances, ask
yourself a few questions, ... If so, then you may have a little financial insecurity going
on.”
推知,“lay your financial fears at the feet of your family”指的是让家人分担你财务

should have a family sit together every day to look at it, and look at three days ahead,”

‘... Wait until the child has been consistently successful with one solution, before
moving on to the next.’”
