The British Invention Show takes place every October in London. The competition looks at
inventions from all over the world. A team of 25 judges look for the best inventions in each of
the three categories: invention, innovation and technology. There are prizes for the best British
inventions and the best international inventions.
The three-day show gives inventors the opportunity to meet new people. Each year a large
number of investors, designers and manufacturers attend the show with the aim of looking to
work directly with new inventors and promoting their products. The inventors who win are
often promoted by the British Inventors Association.
The competition first started in 2001. It has been very successful and for this reason, it now
takes place every year. The 25 judges consist of inventors, manufacturers, academics, investors
and designers. During the event, they look at each invention and rank them against each other.
There is awards ceremony on the last day where prizes are given to the best in each category.

In April this year, I was diving in the Peace River in Florida. At 24, I’d been diving in the
area for six years without any problems, and was guiding the dive for two friends. Because of
the danger from alligators (短吻鳄), we’d usually drop anchor on a particular spot, and bang on
the boat and throw rocks to disturb them, as they tend to avoid contact with humans. But we
hadn’t got much on film that day, so we decided to take a chance. and do something unusual:
instead of staying in one area, we jumped in the river and moved backwards with the current.
I suddenly felt an intense pressure on my left ankle, and, for a split second, I thought it was
Jake messing about. But then the pressure became unbelievably intense, and I knew what was
happening to me.
The alligator was already twisting me as he dragged me to the bottom, in what I knew as a
deep-sea biologist was a death roll-almost always deadly. My survival instinct kicked in: I’ve
never known such mental clarity. The water was only 8 feet deep, so I inflated(使膨胀) my
lifejacket, and kicked with my free leg towards the surface, dragging the alligator with me.
I understood that I would only be able to free myself if the alligator tried to better catch me
with a bite readjustment, so I kept hammering, forcing him to reposition. The pressure on my
ankle eased for just a second, and I took my chance. When his jaws closed again, this time he
got a mouthful of my flipper(橡胶蹼). Kicking with all my strength, I got my foot out of the
flipper and swam for my life to the riverbank.
Alligators don’t like “food” that makes their life difficult, so he didn’t pursue me. I didn’t
blame the alligator: I was in his habitat, and I’d disturbed him. The attack didn’t put me off
diving either. I was back in the river again a few weeks later, but it taught me an important
lesson about taking chances.
24. How did the author react to the intense pressure at the very beginning?
A. He thought Jake was at risk.
B. He thought he was being fooled.
C. He realized he was being attacked.
D. He realized he had made a mistake.
25. What did the author think would play a key role in saving his life?
A. Making good use of his flipper.
B. Calling his two friends for help.
C. Forcing the alligator to bite again.
D. Using a hammer to attack the alligator.【高三第二学期第一次调研考试·英语第 3 页】2
26. What lesson did the author most probably learn from his experience?
A. He shouldn’t inflate his lifejacket.
B. He shouldn’t dive in a strange area.
C. He shouldn’t swim with the current.
D. He shouldn’t drag the alligator with him.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Returning to water with renewed confidence
B. Learning to dive safely in a new place
C. Avoiding close contact with an alligator
D. Surviving an alligator attack

Earlier this year six Amazon Scout delivery robots rolled out in a pilot program in
Snohomish County, Wash. The boxy bots, which resemble six-wheeled ice chests, carry meals,
groceries and packages to homes and offices in this region just north of Seattle. They join a
small-but-growing number of automated couriers (快递员) moving slowly down the sidewalks
of London, Beijing and other cities and communities worldwide. These machines have to face
the challenge of pedestrian legs and broken pavement.
These services are gaining traction as a growing number of citizens expect immediate or
scheduled delivery for just about everything. Between 2016 and 2017 online retail sales in the
US increased by 16 percent. Meal-kit companies are booming and grocery stores are making an
increasing percentage of their sales on line.
On the final leg of all these deliveries, called the last mile, humans on bicycles, or large
delivery trucks typically ferry packages. All those vehicles compete for space on busy urban
streets. “Deliveries are trending upwards in all populated city centers, and if city and state
leaders don’t start thinking about innovations like robot deliveries, we can expect even worse
traffic jams when we’re all trying to get to places,” says Paul Mackie, director of research and
communications at the Mobility Lab,a transportation policy research center in Arlington, Va.
A study by the Mobility Lab and George Mason University found 73 percent of shipping
and delivery University found 73 percent of shipping and delivery vehicles in Arlington were
parked outside of authorized areas, often blocking bike lanes (车道) and crosswalks. By moving
the last leg of deliveries from the road to the sidewalk, cities could reduce jams and solve the
parking problem entirely, Mackie says.
Companies such as Amazon are developing this delivery technology to clear up urban
traffic. Self-driving vehicles and sidewalk robots could reduce last-mile delivery costs in cities
by as much as 40 percent, according to a 2018 report by a New York-based firm. A delivery
robot can cost thousands of dollars to make, and most currently require human assistance. But
in the long run companies that declare the use of autonomous delivery vehicles in the next few
years could end up saving billions of dollars, the report stated.【高三第二学期第一次调研考试·英语第 4 页】3

30. What does Mackie say about robot deliveries?
A. They still need improving. B. They can improve online sales.
C. They help solve traffic problems. D. They worsen the parking problem.
31. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The advantage of using delivery robots.
B. The high cost of making delivery robots.
C. The effect delivery robots have on humans.

Dia is a dog trained to track down a yellow-flowered shrub (灌木) that’s taking root in
New York State Parks. She’s one of a new breed of detection dog assisting conservationists in
the fight against invasive species. With her handler, Joshua Beese, Dia began last fall to hunt for
Scotch broom in Bear Mountain State Park and Harriman State Park about 50 miles north of
New York City. The shrub is a widespread harmful weed in the Pacific Northwest but is fairly
new to New York. Land managers hope to get rid of it before it becomes widespread.
Detection dogs have long been used to sniff out drugs, explosives and disaster survivors.
Now detection dogs are becoming an important tool in the fight against invasive plants and
insects. “Our field in the last 15 years has just exploded, said Pete Coppolillo, executive director
of the nonprofit Working Dogs for Conservation in Bozeman, Montana. Working Dogs for
Conservation has trained dogs to find spotted knapweed in Montana, Chinese bush clover in
Iowa, yellow star thistle in Colorado, rosy wolf snails in Hawaii and brown tree snakes in
Guam.
Dyer’s woad, a knee-high weed from Russia that lights up roadsides with golden blossoms
across the West, is a case study of how dogs can get rid of invaders that escape being found by
human crews. Weed-pulling teams had tried for years to get rid of the weed at Mount Sentinel in
Missoula, Montana, without making much headway. A border collie and a golden retriever from
Working Dogs for Conservation were brought in to focus the teams’ efforts. Within a few years,
the plants were almost gone.
The key is that the dogs can sniff out plants hidden among other species, and they don’t
need flowers to identify them like people do.【高三第二学期第一次调研考试·英语第 6 页】4
Working Dogs for Conservation trains shelter dogs for detection work, screening 1,000
dogs for every one they put to work. To make the cut, the dogs have to be not only good sniffers
with high-energy, but also seriously fascinated with toys so they’ll stay motivated to work for a
reward: the chance to bite a ball
32. What is Dia’s work in Bear Mountain State Park and Harriman State Park?
A. To keep land managers safe.
B. To identify a new harmful plant.
C. To fight against invasive insects.
D. To sniff out drugs and explosives.
33. Why does the author mention Dyer’s woad across the West?
A. To explain how it invaded the West.
B. To show the beautiful natural scenery there.
C. To show dogs can do better than human beings.
D. To explain why the knee-high plant should be removed.
34. What’s implied in the last paragraph?
A. High-energy shelter dogs make bad detectors.
B. More rewards for detection dogs are in great need.
C. Training detection dogs to work seems challenging.
D. Toys are something easily disturbing detection dogs.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Recognizing Flowers to Clear Harmful Plants
B. Training Dogs to Fight Against Invasive Plants
C. Various Weeds Appear in New York State Park
D. Endangered Plants Are Detected by Shelter Dogs

Should parents educate their children at home?
Some parents are now choosing to educate their children at home. This is often because
these children find it difficult to fit into the school system. Why? 36
Of course, there are obvious advantages. Children will be able to realize their potential
better if they can work at their own rate. 37 Problems such as truancy (旷课) and
overpressure are common in some schools, which can be prevented effectively if children learn
at home.
38 First of all, children are able to socialize and meet people of different ages.
Secondly, schools can offer a much wider range of subjects than parents can provide on their
own. Parents would need to have a whole range of professional knowledge in science subjects
like physics and chemistry as well as English literature. And then, schools have more resources
and equipment than can be provided at home. 39 Next, it is also questionable whether【高三第二学期第一次调研考试·英语第 6 页】5
parents could keep a disciplined study atmosphere at home because of the friendly family
atmosphere.
40 It is fair to assume that home education aids concentration and protection, but it
also limits socializing, professional teaching and availability of resources. There may be
particular cases in which home tutoring would be advantageous, such as for severely disabled
children; however, for the vast majority of children there are greater benefits from going to
school.
A. School violence has been decreasing in recent years.
B. However, most parents choose to send children to school.
C. Good teachers are always willing to take the time to reach students.
D. On balance it seems that education at school is preferable to learning at home.
E. Some of them are especially gifted, and the others have problems of some kind.
F. Meanwhile, parents will also be able to protect their children from harmful influences.
G. For example, there are libraries, sports equipment and laboratories for science experiments.
