In 2010, writer Ding Yan made a decision to leave her hometown in west China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region for Dongguan, a manufacturing
(制造业) capital in south China’s Guangdong Province. She wanted to experience and
write about the lives of the city’s factory girls who keep the production lines
(生产线) moving.
For almost a year, Ding worked at two electronics factories and a CD packaging factory.
It was a difficult experience for a woman in her forties. Every day, she would put
a small notebook and pen into her pocket secretly before starting her work. Much
of the book was written during her short toilet breaks at work. From her experiences
and the stories of the women she met came a book, Factory Girls, which came out at
the end of this April.
Factory Girls describes what life is like on the production line. It describes how
the women stand all day, doing the same work. They sometimes chat quietly. One time,
Ding was working next to a girl who told her, “I really wish the production line
could just stop a moment for me to take a breath (呼吸). ”
Ding said, “When I really thought about it, I came to realize that there was no
difference between the factory girls and me. Although I don’t work physically as

When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. The ways of greeting are
not always the same in different countries.
In America, two people usually greet each other with a handshake. It is a way to
show respect(尊重)to the other person. Athletes from opposite teams shake hands
before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when
they meet people they have already known well. When American friends meet each other,
they might only wave(挥手), or maybe just nod(点头)their heads.
In New Zealand, there is a special way of greeting called “Hongi”. In the greeting,
two people press their noses and foreheads(前额)together and close their eyes. This
is an old tradition that comes from the Maori, who were the first people to live
in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when
they meet.
Kissing is sometimes used as a way to greet someone. In some countries, important people used to wear special rings. It was the custom for visitors to kiss these rings
when they came for a meeting. In France, when people meet, they sometimes kiss each
other on the face.
In Japan, people bow to each other every time they meet. Even family members bow
to each other. People decide how low to bow depending on how respected the other
person is.
Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. People can do this with a quick
“hi”, a handshake, or even a simple smile. The important thing is that the people
they are greeting understand them.

62.【参考作文】My Past Beautiful Life
Our life in middle school will come to an end soon. I’ll never forget you. First
of all, I’d like to say that you are the most outgoing boy that I have ever seen.
There is always a smile on your face and everybody likes to make friends with you.
Secondly, I still remember that we used to play basketball on the playground.
Sometimes we went to the park and had a good time there. I always laughed a lot when
I was with you. It was amazing for us to have the same and endless topics. That is
also the reason why I always regard you as my closest friend. Finally, at this very
moment I’m saying goodbye to you. I believe that nothing is more important than
our friendship and I just want to give you my best wishes. I hope you are happy and
healthy forever. I hope you will be successful in the future.
