An increasing number of students worldwide are considering studying abroad. The application process varies
from country to country. If you’re looking for a university with a strong international outlook but feel swept over by
all the application options, here is some guidance to get you started.
UK
International students must apply to universities in the UK through a system known as Ucas. This system allows
students to apply to up to five universities with just one application. It costs £20 for a single choice or £25 for more
than one choice.
The application consists of a series of questions to determine the student’s schooling and predicted grades. The
biggest part of the application form is the personal statement, in which applicants should describe their personal
interests and related experiences.
Switzerland
Switzerland has four official languages and is bordered by five countries so it is no surprise that its universities
are among the most international in the world. International applicants may need to take an entrance exam if they
have a foreign school certificate, and must also prove that they have a good grasp of the French language, usually
through taking a language exam. The full application costs 50 Swiss Francs for a holder of a Swiss diploma and 150
Swiss Francs for holders of foreign diplomas.
Canada
International applicants have to write up a personal profile as part of their application, which is very similar to
the personal statement required for a UK university application. Students will also have to prove their English-
language competency—there are nine ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard, which are listed on
many university websites.
Singapore
The process of applying to a Singaporean university is very much alike, but overseas students may be delighted
to find that the domestic applicants have to cover the same procedures: filling out an online application form and
submit identification documents, supporting documents and an application fee of S$20.
1. Which country requires international applicants know French well?
A. UK. B. Switzerland. C. Canada. D. Singapore.
2. What part of the application is similar between the UK and Canada?

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis’s Swamp
(沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack’s
dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.
“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name? ”
“Are you sure you want to hear it? It’s a scary story,” warned Jack.
“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn’t have chosen this place!”
“Ok, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale.
“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In
those days, the area looked quite different―it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river.
After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he
refused to listen to advice.
“You are clearing too much land,” warned one old man. “The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you
abuse it.”
“Silly fool,” said Dennis to himself. “If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I’ll become wealthier. He’s
just jealous!”
“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed.
He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not
notice salt seeping (渗透) to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”
“What happened?” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.
“The land hit back -- just as the old man warned,” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here
believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”
“What a stupid story,” laughed Tom. “Plants can’t …” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted.
The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy
had covered Tom’s face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.

Space Hotel Promises Guests A Truly Out-Of-This-World Vacation
Looking for a true out-of-this-world vacation? Then you are in luck! On Thursday, Aprils, Texas-based start-up
Orion Span announced they were taking reservations for Aurora (极光) Station, the world's first luxury hotel in space,
which is expected to launch in 2021 and begin welcoming visitors by 2022.
The pill-shaped space station, which begins construction in 2019, will measure 43.5 feet long and 14.1 feet wide
-- about the size of a large private jet’s cabin -- when completed. It will accommodate four guests in two private
suites and two crew members, most likely former astronauts. Hovering about 200 miles above Earth, Aurora Station
will circle the planet once every 90 minutes, enabling guests to enjoy 16 spectacular sunrises and sunsets daily, as3
well as scores of the breathtaking northern and southern auroras that the hotel is named after.
While admiring the beauty of our planet, tourists can eat non-astronaut food and drinks or entertain themselves
with playing cards. Those hoping to do something more worthwhile will be able to engage in astronaut-like
experiments such as growing food in a special environment. The Wi-Fi enabled spacecraft will make it easy for
guests to share their experiences with friends and family members on Earth. At the end of the week and half-long
vacation, returning guests will be treated to a special "hero's welcome", similar to the one experienced by astronauts
returning from a real mission.
Before the once-in-a-lifetime trip, guests will have to undergo the three-month-long special training learning
how to move in a weightless environment, along with the basics of spaceflight and orbital mechanics. Also, before
you start packing your bags, you will have to pay $9.5 million for the 12-day round-trip vacation.
While several companies are planning to build hotels in space, Orion Span hopes to transform sections of used
rockets floating in space into hotel rooms, instead of crowding the already messy skies with additional man-made
objects.
8. What can be learnt about Aurora Station?
A. People can visit it now. B. Its construction will last for about 5 years.
C. It looks like a pill with the size of a small plane. D. It can only hold four people in this station.
9. Why is the station named Aurora Station?
A. Because guests can enjoy spectacular auroras of the Earth.
B. Because the station will give off auroras while travelling.
C. Because the station will run around the auroras of the Earth.
D. Because the hotel is lit up by the auroras of the Earth.
10. What can guests do in a space hotel?
A. Stay there as long as they like. B. Cook meals like they are at home.
C. Receive welcome as a real hero. D. Communicate with their family.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. There is little room for people to live on the earth.
B. Too many space crafts have aroused people's concern.
C. Space hotels will be necessary in the near future.
D. Used rockets floating in space are easy to be recycled.

In the winter of 1664-65, a bitter cold fell on London in the days before Christmas. Above the city, an unusually
bright comet (彗星) shot across the sky, exciting much prediction of a snow storm. Outside the city wall, a woman
was announced dead of a disease that was spreading in that area. Her house was locked up and the phrase “Lord
Have Mercy On Us” was painted on the door in red.
By the following Christmas, the virus that had killed the woman would go on to kill nearly 100,000 people
living in and around London — almost a third of those who did not flee.
In The Great Plague (瘟疫), historian A. Lloyd Moote and microbiologist Dorothy C. Moote provide a deeply
informed account of this plague year. Reading the book, readers are taken from the palaces of the city’s wealthiest
citizens to the poor areas where the vast majority of Londoners were living, and to the surrounding countryside with
those who fled. The Mootes point out that, even at the height of the plague, the city did not fall into chaos. Doctors,
nurses and the church staff remained in the city to care for the sick; city officials tried their best to fight the crisis
with all the legal tools; and commerce continued even as businesses shut down.
To describe life and death in and around London, the authors focus on the experiences of nine individuals.
Through their letters and diaries, the Mootes offer fresh descriptions of key issues in the history of the Great Plague:
how different communities understood and experienced the disease; how medical, religious, and government bodies4
reacted; how well the social order held together; the economic and moral dilemmas people faced when debating
whether to flee the city; and the nature of the material, social, and spiritual resources supporting those who remained.
Based on humanity ( 人 性 ), the authors offer a masterful portrait of a city and its inhabitants attacked by — and
daringly resisting — unimaginable horror.
12. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. London was under an approaching threat. B. A comet always follows a storm.
C. London was prepared for the disease. D. The woman was the beginning of the disease.
13. What do the Mootes say about London during the Great Plague?
A. The plague spared the rich areas. B. The city remained organized.
C. The people tried a lot in vain. D. The majority fled and thus survived.
14. Why do the Mootes focus on the nine individuals?
A. They provided vivid stories of humanity. B. They all managed to survive the Plague.
C. They were famous people in history. D. They united by thinking and acting as one.
15. What’s the purpose of this text?
A. To show respect for the authors. B. To correct a misunderstanding.
C. To report a new research. D. To introduce a new book.

My daughter loved dance, until she didn’t. After an 21 first year, I noticed her interest fading week by5

is okay if that 35 changes.
As adults, we are accustomed to 36 the power of saying yes, but what about saying no? The ability to
recognize when something isn’t an 37 investment of our time or energy is also important. As my daughter gets older,
I want her to feel confident to 38 something that’s no longer meeting her needs. She shouldn’t be held back
by the thought that she must 39 something at any cost 40 because she has started.
