Marc Mendoza is one of just two UK teenagers to be invited by the National Basketball
Association (NBA) for training. The 14-year-old will spend a week in Florida being trained by
professional coaches.
Mendoza said he wants to thank his family, who’ve always supported his dream.
“Everyone is behind me. I want to make their lives better because of what they’ve done for me,”
he said. Mendoza’s ultimate goal is to play the sport professionally. “That’s the main goal right
now, that’s on my bucket list. The best thing that could ever happen to me is getting into the
NBA,” Mendoza said.
The teenager’s journey to Orlando, Florida, began several months ago. He was initially
selected to represent the UK at a training camp in Slovenia. He competed against people of his
age from all over Europe. The camp’s top 10 players were then invited to represent Team Europe
in Florida.
“They tested my skills to the max,” Mendoza said. Mendoza will now face off against the
best players in his age group from around the world.
During his trip to Florida, the 14-year-old will receive guidance from qualified NBA coaches.
His hope is to make enough of an impact so that potential talent scouts (球探) will keep track of
his development.
The NBA hopes to grow the game in Europe and around the world with the aim of attracting
new viewers, players and investors.
Neal Meyer, the NBA’s associate vice president of basketball operations, says European
countries also stand to profit from the game’s spread. “Working with our organization, maybe
they get top national team players and we get a future star of the NBA from one of these 3
3
countries,” he said.
There are just two British players currently plying (从事) their trade in the world’s top
basketball league. The head of British basketball recently told Newsbeat that her aim is to have 40
homegrown players playing in the NBA. Mendoza says he wants to lead the charge for UK
players heading to the US.
“The hard work starts now. I’m going to train, train, train - really push myself. This is where
the hard work begins,” he said.

When I was 12 years old, I knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life.
I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for
helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose.
The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my
purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books.
The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to
become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped
me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the
optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only
possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen 4
4
novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every
single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change
someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily
kindness, you become an architect of positive change.
9. What was the author’s life like when he was 12?
A. Boring. B. Peaceful. C. Unhappy. D. Meaningful.
10. How did the volunteer work benefit the author?
A. It made him popular in his town. B. It helped him find the meaning of life.
C. It helped him understand others’ lives better. D. It helped to shape his dream career.
11. Why did the author choose writing as his job?
A. He was inspired by his teacher. B. He could pass positive energy to readers.
C. He wanted to share his school experiences. D. He found he had a talent for writing.
12. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
A. Say “no” to bullies bravely. B. Make positive changes in their lives.
C. Treat others with kindness in daily life. D. Learn to care more about others’ feelings.

The fact that your hair turns grey because of stress is nothing more than an old wives’ tale. It’s
true that stress isn’t good for you, but it’s not going to turn you into a silver fox just yet. In fact, the
answer comes from the cells in your hair. These are what determine the color and, eventually, the
fade to grey.
Most of us start to notice our first grey hairs by the time we hit our thirties. A general rule to
go by is that by the age of 50, half of the population will have lost the color in 50 percent of their
hair.
But why does it happen? Firstly, we need to understand how hair gets its color.
Your hair is made up of cells called melanocytes (黑色素细胞) which produce pigments (色素)
as they grow into the hair fiber. There are two different types of melanins (黑色素): eumelanins (真
黑色素) and pheomelanins (类黑色素). The former produces black and brown pigments, while the
latter produces red and yellow pigments. The exact amount of these pigments determines whether a
person has black, brown, blonde or red hair. As we age, the ability of the melanocytes to produce
more pigments weakens. That’s because our hair grows in different phases.5
5
The growing phase lasts between three and five years, after which our follicles (毛囊) turn
off for about three months to rest and get ready to grow more hairs. This goes round and round and,
after a time, our bodies aren’t as good at producing new hairs.
Scientists are continuing to try and find ways to prevent greying hair. A team of scientists in
France is working to try and stop the melanocytes from being damaged at the end of each hair cycle.
They are trying to use a special enzyme (酶) to protect the cells from damage. If successful, it
could lead the way for new products that keep our locks full of color for years to come.
13. What does the phrase “an old wives’ tale” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. an incorrect belief B. useless talk C. a scientific rule D. helpful experience
14. What do we know about red hair?
A. It doesn’t turn grey as people get older.
B. It contains more pheomelanins than melanins.
C. The amount of pigments in it doesn’t change over time.
D. People with red hair have weaker ability to produce pigments.
15. What can we infer from the article?
A. Grey hair has nothing to do with stress.
B. Grey hair is a symbol of declining health.
C. It takes three months for new hair to grow.
D. The growth and color change of hair depend on cells.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

The benefits of keeping a journal
If you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem
simple, but it can make a big difference in your life. I have been keeping journals for years. Writing
all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has become a habit for me. 16 Here are some
benefits you will get by keeping a journal.
◆ It prevents you from losing an idea. Have you ever gotten an idea only to lose it later because you
didn’t write it down? 17 But then I developed the habit of writing down every idea that came
into my mind as soon as possible. If I’m away from my computer, I usually write it down on a piece 6
6
of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the idea to the journal in my computer.
◆ It helps you review all the lessons you’ve learned. By reviewing your journal, you can quickly
see the lessons you’ve learned and the ideas you’ve gotten. 18 You can use the ideas to propel (鞭
策) yourself forward.
◆ 19 After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far you’ve gone.
Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past
might have been realized today.
◆ It helps you expand your ideas. When you try to come up with a sentence to express an idea, you
are thinking actively about it. 20 In the end, you will expand your ideas.
A. I often experienced that myself.
B. It trains you to express your thoughts.
C. It allows you to see your progress over time.
D. Just use whatever tool you feel comfortable with.
E. Thinking actively helps you connect your idea to another idea.
F. And to be honest, I can’t imagine what my life would be like without it.
G. Then you can do whatever necessary to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
