Rajendra Singh is considered a hero in the state of Rajasthan, India, for single-handedly
saving five rivers that had been dried up for decades.
Singh, who studied Ayurvedic medicine at college, had always dreamed of becoming a
farmer. So when he moved to Rajasthan's Alwar district in 1985, he was interested in curing not
just his people, but also the region's ecosystem.
Singh noticed that most villagers had left their homes after the local Arvari River had dried
up, and the only people who remained were either too old or too poor to move elsewhere. Singh,
driven by a strong desire to help the villagers, took on the task of bringing water back to those
lands.
For two years, Singh worked tirelessly, building johads (rainwater storage tanks built with
stone, dirt, or whatever materials are available) and checking dams that didn't result in much
success. Local elders laughed at him, but he continued working with enthusiasm. And his
enthusiasm proved infectious-seeing he was sincere in wanting to help bring water back to their
lands, the locals soon began to give money and offer suggestions on appropriate locations to build
more dams and johads.
Finally his strategy worked. It wasn't long before the Arvari River came back to life, along
with four other rivers. People who had abandoned the districts slowly began to move back home,
returning to their traditional way of life.
Inspired by his success, Singh runs a non-profit organization called Tarun Bharat Sangh
(TBS), through which he helps thousands of people solve problems of water shortage. Since the
1980s, TBS has built over 4,500 johads that collect rainwater in 850 villages in 11 districts in
India.
24.What did Rajendra Singh do after moving to Alwar district?
A.He paid attention to its ecosystem.
B.He worked hard to be a good farmer.
C.He focused on researching into medicine.
D.He provided free medical treatment for the poor.
25.Why did most villagers leave their homes?
A.The living conditions were bad.
B.They wanted to realize their dreams.C.They were driven out by floods.
D.They needed to earn money to survive.
26.Which words can be used to describe Singh?
A.Brave and generous. B.Caring and determined.
C.Stubborn and tough. D.Creative and broad-minded.
27.What can we know about Tarun Bharat Sangh?
A.It is funded by the rich local citizens.
B.It is founded to support Singh's medical research.
C.It enables many villagers to gain easier access to water.
D.It calls on all Indians to protect their living environment.
C
When it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes, which should come first-changing your
diet or becoming more physically active?
Previous studies suggested that providing people with too much information about nutrition
and physical activity at once tends(趋向)to be discouraging. That has led to the popularity of
advising people to make changes gradually, and set smaller goals.
So the scientists divided 200 inactive participants who were 45 or older into four groups. One
group was instructed in making diet and fitness changes at the same time; the second group was
taught about diet changes first, and then fitness changes four months later; the third group changed
their exercise habits first and made changes in their eating habits four months later; and the final,
control group was not instructed in either diet or fitness changes but in how to manage their stress.
The researchers followed the groups for a full year. Compared to the control group, the three
intervention(干预)groups made healthy changes in their diet. Those who changed their fitness
habits first significantly increased the amount of exercise they received daily compared to the
other groups after four months. However, at the end of the year, the group that changed both diet
and exercise at the same time was the only one that met the nationally recommended targets for
both exercise and nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their nutrition first were
unable to meet the recommended levels of fitness after a year. The researchers suspect that
changes to diet are easier to make than changes to physical activity.
The findings show, however, that pairing diet and exercise changes may help to overcome
some of the barriers people face in adding more physical activity into their lives. If folks change
diet and exercise orderly, the scientists say, they may end up placing more importance on the first
set of behavior changes and feel less pressured to address the second set.
28.How is Paragraph 3 developed?
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.C.By analyzing causes. D.By making classifications.
29. Which group was the most physically active after four months?
A.The first group. B.The second group.
C.The third group. D.The control group.
30.What might the scientists approve of?
A.Changing eating habits first may be reasonable.
B.Diet and exercise changes should be made orderly.
C.Diet and exercise changes are equally hard to make.
D.Diet and exercise should be processed at the same time.
31.Which of the following is probably the title of the passage?
A.Changing your habits for better health
B.Ways to lead a healthy and balanced life
C.Making healthy lifestyle changes really counts
D.Timing matters in making diet and exercise changes
D
Students should be able to show what they know. Many folks take this as a self-evident truth.
But I think it demands closer examination.
Possessing a skill or piece of knowledge is not the same thing as being able to show it. This is
why many smart young people hate school. Understanding, figuring out, and getting a handle on a
piece of knowledge is really exciting, but having to prove to somebody else that you understand is
a big fat pain in the neck.
Finding proof of student learning is a huge part of the teacher's job, and whether it is done
poorly or not makes all the difference in that teacher's effectiveness. There is a huge difference
between “How do I figure out if this student understands” and “How do I make this student prove
to me he gets it.” The first is a valuable approach; the second is the first step on the road toward
wasting everybody's time.
And there's the problem. If we start with the assumption(假定)that a student who knows
must be able to show his knowledge to our satisfaction, we will be traveling down the wrong road.
The more we demand that students prove to us that they know the stuff, the more we will design
artificial tasks that demand a set of skills and knowledge entirely different from the skills and
knowledge we really want to measure.
As a classroom teacher, I have to remember that the burden is on me to find a way to see
what my students know; the burden is not on them to put on whatever trained monkey show I
design for my own ease and convenience.
It may not be the worst thing ever to say “Students should be able to show what they know.”
But I think it's far more useful to say, “Teachers should be able to discover what students know.”32.What does the underlined phrase in the second paragraph mean?
A.Very dangerous. B.Very annoying. C.Very difficult. D.Very frequent.
33.According to the third paragraph, a teacher should have the ability to .
A.discover whether his students know
B.avoid wasting the precious time in class
C.apply various approaches while teaching
D.give students the chance to prove themselves
34.What does the author think of the artificial tasks designed to test students' learning?
A.They should be limited in number.
B.They are a huge burden on teachers.
C.They should mainly focus on effectiveness.
D.They slide away from their original purpose.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Students should be able to show what they know.
B.There are many ways to find proof of student learning.
C.Teachers should be able to discover what students know.
D.There should be better understanding between teachers and students.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

How to manage holiday stress
As the holiday season approaches, I encourage my patients to ask themselves if the glass is
half full or half empty. How we manage the holidays may have as much to do with our
expectations as our resources. 36.
Your neighbors are throwing a holiday party, and they've asked you to make all of the
desserts. 37. While you feel very overwhelmed, you feel a sense of obligation(义务)
to please others.
In situations like these, I advise my patients to take a step back and remember that they're not
supermen. Don't let “supposed to do” take the place of what you would like to do. To reduce
pressure, try to keep your life simple by talking with family members or friends before making
decisions. 38.
It also helps to get prepared for some problems. This goes back to managing expectations.
Prepare for the unexpected and know that some problems are possible such as traffic or forgetting
a present for a family member. 39. The holidays can also be a time of year that brings unpleasant memories such as sad events or
anniversaries. For some who have experienced abuse, holiday activities can lead to unpleasant
memories.
40 . Make the most of them. Look for easy, social and comforting ways to
celebrate. Get together with family and friends to bake while listening to great music or to help
younger children make crafts for their presents while watching an old movie. These activities can
reduce stress and can also be easy on your budget.
A.Remember that the holidays are as short as life.
B.It is not a good idea to give in to others' requests.
C.It is important to be realistic about what you want.
D.But you want to spend time with your family baking.
E.Spare your time with your family during the holiday.
F.This will help you to spend the holidays what you want.
G.Most importantly, don’t blame yourself for what goes wrong.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a student in China. I've planned to come to England this coming winter holiday, during which
time I hope to have my English improved, especially my vocabulary. I also hope to develop my skill of public
speaking in English. That's why your ad appealed to me the moment I happened to read it online.
I hope to know something about whether your teachers are experienced and how many students there are in a
class. I hope that there won't be too many students in each class, so that we can have enough chances to practice
English. Besides, I'm not clear about when the courses begin and how much you charge for the course .
Meanwhile, it couldn't be better if you could provide food and accommodation for us students.
Hope to hear from vou soon.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
