When traveling on a budget, every dollar counts. Unfortunately, the cost of tickets alone can make a serious
hole in your savings. Don’t let that stop you from taking your dream vacation, though. According to Jeff Klee, CEO
of CheapAir.com, there is a “sweet spot” to get the biggest bang for your buck.
“The most important rule is fairly obvious: don’t wait until the last minute, as that rarely works out,” he said
in a statement. “But beyond that, you also want to be careful not to buy too early.”
Still, that’s easier said than done. Finding the most cost-efficient time to book is tough. Luckily, somebody
did the math—so you don’t have to. Data crunchers from the online travel agency CheapAir.com surveyed over 917
million fares to determine the day with the cheapest rates.
Here’s what they found: while prices tend to stay the same between 320 and 106 days before a trip, they start
dropping at the 105-day mark. That said, you might be tempted to book the moment prices drop. But hold on!
You’ll save even more money by booking precisely 70 days before your trip. According to CheapAir.com, you can
save 48 percent of the ticket’s total cost by using this trick. After that date, airfares will begin to increase again.
And don’t even think about booking any later than 20 days ahead of time, as prices will be soaring.
So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next dream vacation, and book accordingly. Your wallet will
thank you—guaranteed.
1.When can we book our plane tickets to save the most money?
A.The later, the better.
B.As early as possible.

2.How much can the trick help us save if the ticket costs $400 totally?
A.$48. B.$192.
C.$208. D.$352.
3.What’s the purpose of the author in writing this text?A.To explain what a “sweet spot” is.
B.To attract people to traveling by plane.
C.To show the ways of booking plane tickets.
D.To tell people how to buy cheap plane tickets.

I was waiting for my train and on the subway station’s floor was a man just sitting there. I looked around and
nobody stopped so I just went my way. After a few steps, I turned and asked him whether he needed help. He told
me his house was one station further and he would only need to take the train there. So I reached for his hand to
help him stand up.
He wanted to take the stairs but I feared that he would hurt himself since he seemed too weak to walk, so I
asked him to take the elevator. Even though my mind was trying to turn the danger lights on, I put the thought that I
should not go alone with a drunken man out of my mind and accompanied him on the elevator.
We arrived on the platform with no incidents. The man’s knees seemed to soften, so I asked him to rest on a
bench. While sitting there, he thanked me, telling me that I saved him. No, I said, I really did nothing; he saved
himself as he walked on his own feet.
At the next station, we said our goodbyes. Before I knew it, he left 100 dollars and dashed out of the train.
There was no way to give him back his money. I wanted to leave it on the seat, but a young woman who thought it
belonged to me ran after me and gave me the note.
My initial reaction to getting that money was of shame and I even felt offended. Then I thought he just wanted
to thank me, the best way he knew how. Now, my question is what act of kindness shall I do with these 100
dollars?4.Why was the man sitting on the subway station’s floor?

Technology offers conveniences such as opening the garage door from your car or changing the television
station without touching the TV.
Now one American company is offering its employees a new convenience: a microchip implanted in their
hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands. Three Square Market
is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $300 and Three Square Market
will pay for the chip. Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands. About 70 out of 80
employees have chosen to do so. The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips
implanted in their hands.
The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt
only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person
can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner.
The chips will be also used to identify employees. Employees who want convenience, but do not want to have a
microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a wristband or a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the
same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.
Three Square Market is the first company in the United States to offer to implant chips in its employees.
Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.
Three Square Market says the chip cannot track the employees. The company says scanners can read the chips
only when they are within a few inches of them. “The chips protect against identity theft, similar to credit cards.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the chips back in 2004, so they should be safe for humans,
according to the company.
In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office. Todd Westby is
Chief Executive Officer of Three Square Market. He says,“Eventually, this technology will become standardized
allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”
8.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The substitutes of the chips.
B.The potential risks of implanting the chips.
C.The places to implant the chips.
D.The advantages of the chips.
9.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The hands. B.The scanners. C.The employees. D.The credit cards.
10.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The chips have magic powers.
B.The price of the chips is reasonable.
C.The chips are very popular among the employees.D.Most people suspect the application of the chips.
11.Which of the following best describes Todd Westby’s attitude towards the chips?
A.Defensive. B.Disappointing. C.Casual. D.Optimistic.

Being stuck behind crowds of slow walkers when you’re in a hurry is one of the most annoying things. But
now, Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, one of the UK’s largest shopping malls, has introduced its very own fast
lane for shoppers in a hurry, aiming to help impatient shoppers avoid slow walkers and the anger that goes with
them.
The Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex has introduced a 720foot ‘fast lane’ reserved for fast walkers only,
just in time for the festive rush. The center’s management team said,“The lane will help the shoppers who know
where they want to go quickly and don’t want to get caught in behind unhurried shoppers at the busiest time of the
year.”
The fast lane was introduced after a MasterCard survey found that 80 percent of consumers found slow
walkers their biggest annoyance while shopping. The research also found that the average walking speed slowed
down by 21 percent during the festive shopping period, as most shoppers spent more time window shopping during
this period.
Gary Mortimer, an expert from the Queensland University of Technology, said he wasn’t surprised by the
promotion about the launch of the fast lane, and thought the concept would appeal to shoppers all over the world.
“Crowded parking lots and busy shopping centers tend to be two of the biggest complaints of shoppers over the
festive season,” he said.“I think the fast lanes are a new approach. However, I suspect it will be a bit like fast
lanes on the highway, so it might end up being more trouble than its worth.”
The MasterCard survey also identified the four most common types of shoppers. They include “Skaters” who
try and make their way through crowds politely, “Dodgers” who move down the paths to avoid slow walkers,“Bulldozers”who push their way through crowds, and “Tutters”who express their frustrations to slow
walkers.
12.The fast lane is intended for the shoppers who________.
A.can’t move quickly because of physical disabilities
B.buy things on their shopping lists quickly
C.take their time to do window shopping
D.want to leave the mall quickly
13.What is Gary Mortimer’s attitude to the fast lane?
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent.
C.Critical. D.Objective.
14.Who may patiently move behind a slow crowd?
A.Skaters. B.Dodgers.
C.Bulldozers. D.Tutters.
15.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Shopping can be annoying sometimes.
B.How to avoid slow walkers when shopping.
C.The problems that shopping centers face during busy holidays.
D.The shopping mall creates the fast lane to avoid slow walkers.

said,‘The lane will help the shoppers who know where they want to go quickly and don’t want to get caught in
behind unhurried shoppers at the busiest time of the year.’”

Failing an exam can make someone feel really bad about themselves. A lot of people who fail an exam might think that failing an exam makes them a failure in life. 16.
Don’t make fun of them. Failing a test can be a seriously upset thing. And even if they seem okay about it,
they might be hiding how they really feel. Don’t make fun of them for failing. 17.

you know someone who has failed the same test or exam, but then became successful, tell them about it! It can
remind them that good things will happen again, too.

of me which she made me a special breakfast. Therefore, I complained about the food she cooked. Grandma quiet
put down the bowl and went into the living room. I followed and saw tear in her eyes. It was the first time that I
have ever seen my strong grandmother to cry. And I knew I was the one who had caused it. I apologized and asked
her to forgive me. She smiled and told me I was good boy even if I didn’t feel like one then. That memory will stay
