Here’s a look at some of his recent goals and how they’re shaking out. Self-driving Tesla cars Goal A million full self-driving Teslas will be on roads by 2020. What he said “I feel very confident predicting autonomous robo-taxis for Tesla next year,” Musk said at Tesla’s autonomy day for investors last month. Status It’s hard to believe Tesla will pull off the timeline. No self-driving Teslas are on the road today due in part to the fact that the software isn’t ready. Hyperloop and Loop Goal Tunnels can solve urban congestion. What he said “You can alleviate any arbitrary level of urban congestion with a 3D tunnel network,” he said in April 2017. Status Hyperloop would be an underground vacuum tube in which electric pods move people at speeds over 600 mph. The Boring Company, Musk’s tunneling venture, is currently developing Loop projects in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago and between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. Trips to the moon Goal Space tourism around the moon will occur by 2018. What he said “Next year is going to be a big year for carrying people to the space station and hopefully beyond,” he said in February 2017. Status SpaceX, Musk’s rocket and space exploration company, failed to deliver on its promise. In February 2018, Musk said SpaceX would use its Big Falcon Rocket for tourism instead. That move is now scheduled to come as soon as 2023. Brain computer interfaces Goal Humans will have brain-computer interfaces as soon as 2025. What he said “I think we are about eight to 10 years away from this being usable by people with no disability,” he said in April 2017. Status Musk has taken steps to meet this deadline, but it’s too early to say yet if he will succeed. Neuralink, a company Musk created in 2017, is making a brain-computer interface to physically plug into a person’s head. Neuralink’s plans have largely been kept quiet but it continues to hire staff.2020届高三英语二月月考试卷(共10页)第4页 21. Which of Elon Musk’s predictions has so far failed to come true? A. Trips to the moon. B. My brother Kyle and I were thinking about writing a book because it seemed like a good way to reach others and share what we had learned. However, we were doubtful. Could we really doit? What if no one liked it? What if we failed? What if… We had to think differently. As teens, we had little to lose by trying and a lot to lose by letting this opportunity slip by, so we decided to give it a shot. Locked up in our small 10x10 foot bedroom, which reached 103 degrees on hot summer days, we just started writing. We wrote a list of goals, people we wanted to meet, things we wanted to own, as well as inspirational quotations — anything to keep us focused and motivated. A few weeks later, a family friend offered us two tickets to a local business conference where Jack Canfield was the keynote speaker. The event was a valuable experience and at the end of it, we waited in line for over thirty minutes to personally speak with Jack. We shared our book idea with him and he didn’t laugh! Instead, he offered us the support, encouragement, and insight we needed to realize our goal. We finally completed our first book, Cool Stuff They Should Teach in School. The full process took three and a half years of hard work and sacrifices, but in the end, it was worth every minute. It was such a strange but rewarding feeling to walk into a bookstore and see our book on the shelves. Since its publication, we have enjoyed seeing its impact on other young people and receiving e-mails from readers almost every day. Sure enough, requests to speak at various venues soon came rolling in. All of us have opportunities around each day, but most people don’t recognize them because they’re often disguised as hard work. It comes down to our ability to see problems as opportunities and our willingness to take a leap of faith without the guarantee of success. As Michael Nolan once said, “It’s not who we are that holds us back; it’s who we think we’re not.” 24. The author and his brother decided to write a book . A. to get some experience B. to encourage their peers C. to call for readers’ support D. to share something with others 25. How did they manage to finish their first book? A. By focusing on small goals. B. By turning to publishers for help.2020届高三英语二月月考试卷(共10页)第5页 C. By staying focused and motivated. D. By seeking constant help from Canfield. 26. Why do most people often fail to achieve success? A. Because they are actually afraid of hard work. B. Because they regard opportunities as problems. C. Because they don’t have the same opportunities. D. Because they don’t have the willingness to succeed. 27. The main purpose of the author’s writing the passage is to . A. criticize B. inform C. praise D. inspire C Last year saw one of the poorest salmon returns on record in North America. Yet, we are eating more fish than ever before. Aquaculture (水产养殖) production has tripled in the last two decades to meet this need, and another historic move was made by the FDA earlier this year, when a company received the first ever nod to sell a genetically modified salmon, a bioengineered version of the Atlantic salmon. US-based AquaBounty, the firm which received the go-ahead, said it would begin stocking fish in supermarkets “as soon as possible.” The first commercial harvest is expected at the end of 2020. At the moment, Argentina, Brazil and China have also granted environmental approvals for genetically modified fish farming trials. This genetically modified salmon is actually a fish injected with the DNA of two other edible fish. The long road to the current version of the GM fish began in the 1980s when a physiologist named Garth Fletcher read about the work being done to genetically modify mice and wondered whether it could apply to salmon. He understood that the fish’s growth hormones are most active in some seasons and considered changing this so that the hormones are always active. Cut to 2019, Fletcher’s GM fish is able to reach adult size in 16 to 18 months, compared with 30 months for natural Atlantic salmon, while consuming 25% less feed. In the United States, Atlantic salmon is endangered, so catching it is heavily restricted. It is currently imported from Chile, Norway and Canada. If the production and sales of AquaBounty go as planned, this will all change. And simultaneously, the company claims that farming the fish in their land-based hatcheries will lower the transportation cost as well as emissions associated with importing the fish as is currently done. This has not all been without stiff opposition, and protestors who have sent nearly 2 million comments to the FDA have had issues on three main fronts. Health risks, being the main one, as it has been with several other genetically modified foods in the past. The environmental group Earth Action says no one can predict what will happen when people start eating the fish over time. 28. What can we learn about AquaBounty? A. It is a firm located in Argentina. B. It performs research into GM fish. C. It deals with the production and sales of fish. D. It is the only firm allowed to produce GM fish. 29. One of the advantages of the GM salmon is that . Protestors again GM salmon worry that . A. fish markets will be seriously disturbed B. GM food has potential health problems C. A. the nod to sell a GM salmon B. the lower cost of GM salmon C. the prediction about what will happen D. the import of salmon from Chile, Norway and Canada D Italy and China has agreed to jointly advance the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) (一带一路), which aims to build a trade and infrastructure network to connect Asia with Europe and Africa along ancient trade routes. Italy will use this opportunity to cooperate with China to develop its northern ports and the InvestItalia program, and promote cooperation in all fields. Despite some skepticism, the BRI has developed into one of the world’s largest cooperation platforms and become a hot public good. More than 120 countries and 29 international organizations have signed agreements with China up to date, bringing all sorts of development opportunities to parties of the BRI, including the construction of Kenya’s first high-speed expressway, the first cross-sea bridge in the Maldives, and the formation of the car industry in Belarus. The inclusion of Italy into the BRI makes Italy the first G7 country to formally join the Initiative, and sets a new milestone in the process of building the Belt and Road. What makes the BRI unique is that it is an initiative for win-win cooperation rather than zero-sum competition. As everyone knows, the BRI has its origin in the ancient Silk Road trade route that linked China with many places in the world, including the Italian cities of Rome and Venice. Italy is a natural fit for the ambitious project because of its historical connections with China, and also because of the need to be open rather than closed, to cooperate rather than confront. In this fast-changing world, seeking win-win progress is the best path forward for all countries. In China, it is said that without a big breakthrough in thinking, there will be no big leap in practice; and without a big leap in practice, there will be no great development. A number of Chinese ideas and initiatives have been formed with the goal of building a community of common destiny in mind. Under the BRI, we can expect China to deepen policy coordination, facilities connectivity, free trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds. The revival of China as a great power is a blessing to the world, contributing to the building of a better world. 32. How does the author develop the second paragraph?2020届高三英语二月月考试卷(共10页)第7页 A. Some participants will win at the cost of others. 35. What is best title of the passage? A. The revival of China as a great power B. Construction along ancient trade routes C.
