It can be hard to find joy and fulfillment in a job that feels meaningless. But when you do what you love for a
living and know that you're making a difference, every day is filled with purpose.
Over the Veteran's Day break, Turlock High School English teacher Jared Jeffries visited a family where he
overheard a relative, Uncle Will, told his 16-year-old niece that nobody loves their jobs and that we do the things
that really matter after work. Jared couldn't disagree more. So Jared Jeffries shared his wise words on Facebook
for anyone who needs a little inspiration this school year.
“I’ve often called teaching the ‘ impossible job' 一 to do it perfectly is to understand the unique needs of
about 30 different students in a 45-minute period and to meet those individual needs. Every new year is an
opportunity to reflect and improve 一 to inch closer to the impossible task to teach every kid every day. I think that's why Uncle Will has no passion 一 his job is entirely too possible. The goals are too easily attainable and the
risks too small and the rewards a reflection.
You will want to quit, at times, because your job is impossible. And because your job is impossible, at times,
you will never want to quit. You can love your job. The excitement never has to wear off. The purpose of work is
that you can do things that really matter. ”
Jared's message resonated(共鸣)with hundreds, many of whom are teachers themselves. The idea was
clear: to find meaning in life, we must create it. And that comes from pushing ourselves to achieve the impossible
because we'll never stop striving for greatness. Let's all follow his lead and build passion and purpose in every
single part of our lives.
24. What caused Jared Jeffries to post the words on Facebook?
A. His dissatisfaction with his job.
B. The confusion of a 16-year-old girl.

D. The appeal from someone who needs encouragement.
25. How does Jared Jeffries introduce his opinion?
A. By using data. B. By making comparisons.
C. By listing examples. D. By giving explanations.
26. Which of the following can best describe Jared Jeffries?
A. Inspiring. B. Considerate.
C. Determined. D. Stubborn.
27. What is the author s purpose of writing the text?
A. To call on students to be teachers.
B. To inspire people to be passionate.
C. To tell people Jared's work experience.
D. To recommend ways to guarantee success to people.

Back in April 1939 and armed with a $ 5,000 grant supplied by the Rockefeller Foundation, Columbia
University Teachers College professor Frank Cyr took a tour of ten states to assess the extent of school
transportation issues. What he found proved that student transportation was in a sorry state. Many students had no
dependable way to get to school and the ones who did often traveled in unsafe, unstandardized buses in the over
100 ,000 school districts that existed back then ( contrast with the roughly 13,000 that exist today). One of the
huge variations (变化)in school transportation that he saw is the bus color, which is yellow now.
Seeing a need to fix this system, Cyr organized a conference——one that would change the future of school
buses forever. School officials and transportation specialists met to set much-needed standards for buses,
including those for color, height, and width as well as safety rules that hadn't previously been set or that varied by
state.
There were many different bus colors in the United States before this conference ; several districts even
planned to have red, white, and blue buses as a way of promoting patriotism(爱国主义)among students. Cyr
presented his new options to education officials, a reported “50 shades ranging from lemon yellow to deep orange-red”. The matter was settled quickly. Yellow was chosen for its high visibility and the way it emphasized the bold,
black writing that would be on the side of each bus to denote its respective school district. This yellow color is an
important factor for vehicles that travel during early morning and late afternoon hours. Thirty-five states made the
changes promptly, and every state was on board by 1974.
Known as the “father of the yellow school bus ”,Frank Cyr s legacy has definitely affected your life if you
ever took a school bus or saw that familiar color pulling up to your stop on a dusky morning.
28. What did Cyr find in the tour of ten states in 1939?
A. No one cared about student transportation.
B. One of the states had terrible transportation.
C. Bus color had no effect on the school bus safety.
D. School bus safety then was much terrible.
29. Why did Cyr organize a conference ?
A. To revise some safety regulations.
B. To improve safety of student transportation.
C. To remind students to take safe transportation.
D. To appeal to schools to use official school buses.
30. What does the underlined word “denote” in the third paragraph probably mean?
A. Decorate. B. Conduct. C. Prohibit. D. Indicate.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why School Buses Are Always Yellow B. Why Yellow School Buses Are the Safest
C. How Cyr Makes School Bus Safety Rules D. How We Should Improve School Bus Safety
D
Like most people, you have probably lost count of the number of perfectly pristine-looking shoes you have
thrown away because the rubber soles (鞋底)are cracked. In addition to the expense, it is also harmful to our
environment. Now, thanks to a revolutionary self-healing 3-D printed rubber material, cracked shoe soles may be
a thing of the past.
The magical polymer(聚合物,多聚体)is the brainchild of researchers at the University of Southern
California (USC) and the University of Connecticut ( UConn) . The team, led by USC Assistant Professor
Qiming Wang, created it through a process called photopolymerization (光聚合作用),which uses light to
solidify the liquid used to create 3-D printed plastic. The researchers found that adding the right proportion of
oxidant(氧化剂) to the liquid allowed the 3-D polymer to heal without slowing down the hardening process.
“When we gradually increase the oxidant, the self-healing behavior becomes stronger, but the
photopolymerization behavior becomes weaker,” explained Wang. " There is competition between these two
behaviors. And eventually, we found the ratio that can enable both high self-healing and relatively rapid
photopolymerization. ”
The team, who published their findings in the journal NPG Asia Materials on February 1st, 2019, state that
the repair time can be reduced by increasing the room temperature. “ If you just put a broken shoe on a bench at
room temperature, the rubber will heal itself in six to eight hours,” Wang said. “If you apply heat, at maybe 60°C,
that accelerates the healing process to about two hours. ”Given the material's tremendous potential, it is not surprising to hear that Wang and his team have been
approached by several shoe manufacturers (制造商)eager to be the first to use the technology, which is still in
the early stages. Once perfected, the scientists also hope to apply the technique to hard plastics that can be used to
create self-healing toys, electronics, vehicle parts, and, if Wang has his way, even tires.
32. How do the researchers make 3-D printed plastic self-heal?
A. By changing the proportion of light used.
B. By raising the temperature at which it is used.
C. By increasing the hardening speed of the liquid.
D. By adding the proper amount of oxidant to the liquid.
33. What can we infer from Qiming Wang?
A. The more oxidant added, the faster the healing process becomes.
B. The concentration of the liquid contributes to self-healing.
C. The surrounding temperature determines the speed of healing.
D. There is cooperation between self-healing and photopolymerization.
34. What is shoe manufacturers' attitude to the revolutionary material?
A. Interested. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
35. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A science magazine. B. An advertisement for shoes.
C. An instruction about 3-D printing. D. A report on environmental protection.

People seeking a fast solution to weight loss are often willing to try any options, from special tea to a
spoonful of apple vinegar every day. 36 .
A study in Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism found that black seed oil causes gradual partial rebirth of
pancreatic (胰腺的)beta-cells, increases the lowered serum insulin (胰岛素)concentrations, and decreases
the raised serum glucose(葡萄糖).37 ____
Black seed oil is available as an oil or a liquid supplement at many health food or vitamin stores. As with
most supplements, the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) does not regulate the production of black seed
oil. 38 . The FDA can then regulate the product if they find it makes claims that aren't true or perhaps don't
meet the safety standards. In short, you can't know you're getting genuine black seed oil unless you're buying from
a reputable brand.
39 ________You can take 500mg twice a day, and research shows you're unlikely to experience side effects.
It may even be safe to take as much as two grams in a day, but for the best results, start with a small dose (剂
量) and increase as you find you can tolerate it. 40 Some of the active ingredients (成分,原料)in black
seed oil can influence prescription medicines.
“ Even though the sample of studies is small to nonexistent when it comes to using black seed oil for weight
loss, I would say there's no harm in trying it given its other powerful properties," says Nikola Djordjevic, MD.
A. Be careful of side effects from taking too much.
B. The FDA also does not have a recommended daily dose.C. It's left up to the manufacturer to meet all the safety requirements.
D. However, the newest supplement for weight loss is black seed oil.
E. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking the supplement, though.
F. Proper glucose control can reduce appetite and may help you lose weight.
G. But if you want to lose weight, you'd better think about changing your overall diet first.
