Then her family would finally be able 英语(二)第 4 页(共 9 页) |全国 I 卷| to move out of their wooden home, which has been almost uninhabitable since an earthquake shook the country four years ago. Rai's house in Raigaun has been standing only unsafely since April 2015. That is when a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed about 9 ,000 people and left more than 785 ,000 families homeless in one of the world's poorest nations. The government set up the National Reconstruction Authority ( NRA) to rebuild the homes of all affected residents by 2020. But progress has been slow, in part due to a lack of materials and skilled labours, with thousands of men leaving the country each week to look for work. Tired of waiting for someone else to build her a safer home, Rai enrolled (报名参加)in a 50-day training course. When she was done, she joined with four other course graduates to build her family a new house. This time, it is designed to stay intact if another earthquake hits. Founded in 2015 and due to end in 2020, the Skills for Reconstruction project teaches Nepalis in earthquake- hit areas how to build disaster-resilient houses. The aim is to help ease the country’s labour shortage while also arming participants with experience they can later use to find jobs in construction. In Makawanpur district, a third of trainees have been women. For many of them, learning masonry (石工)has allowed them to break free from traditional roles of farming and caregiving and finally make an income of their own. C On December 13 , 2018, Virgin Galactic' s spaceliner, VSS Unity, made history with the longest rocket- powered flight when it rose to the edge of space, 82 km above sea level. On February 22, 2019, the aircraft repeated the achievement, this time with its first passenger — the company’s astronaut trainer Beth Moses on board. VSS Unity made the initial 8.5-mile ascent (升髙),to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere, attached to aircraft carrier WhiteKnightTwo. The spacecraft, designed to carry six passengers and two pilots, was then sent up and flown to an altitude of 89. 9 km by Dave Mackay and Michael "Sooch” Masucci. Once there, the crew members spent a few minutes taking in the incredible "out of this world" views of Earth before landing at California's Mojave Airport, where a cheering crowd waited for them. After returning briefly to her seat to ensure the seat belt still worked, the former NASA employee moved across the cabin (船舱)and then back over to the windows, which had been designed to provide passengers with great views of our planet. Though the date of Virgin Galactic's commercial flight to space has yet to be announced, the company has already received money from more than 600 space tourists, each willing to pay the astronomical sum of $250,000 for this once — in — a — lifetime experience. Among them is Mr. Branson, who has announced he intends to make the journey on July 24, 2019, the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. D Researchers in Singapore found that eating mushrooms over twice per week could help prevent memory and language problems later in life. According to the study, published in The Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, there is a unique antioxidant (抗氧 化物质)present in mushrooms that helps protect certain brain functions. Researchers observed 663 Chinese adults aged over 60 whose diets and lifestyles were tracked from 2011 to 2017. In the study, the participants were asked how often they ate six different types of mushrooms: oyster, shiitake, white button, dried, golden and tinned. The findings showed that eating more than two shares of mushrooms per week somehow lowered the chances of mild cognitive impairment ( MCI) by 50% against those who ate fewer than one share. MCI is a condition that can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and finding the exact position of objects in spaces. Changes in behavior can be not very noticeable and not serious enough to be known as dementia (痴呆). Participants who ate more mushrooms were found to perform better in thinking and processing exams and also exhibited a faster processing speed. The advantage was reportedly more apparent in those who ate more than two shares a week or more than 300 grams. The scientists pointed out, however, that they had yet to build a direct link between the fungi (真菌)and brain function. 英语(二)第 6 页(共 9 页) |全国 I 卷| The researchers also acknowledged that since this study mainly relied on self-reported information on mushroom intake and other dietary factors, further studies may be required. Still, the lead study author Lei Feng is encouraged by their findings. "This relevance is surprising and encouraging," Lei said. Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources of ergothioneine — a substance which we humans can't make on our own. 32. What aspect of research did researchers mainly do in Paragraph 3 ? A. The researchers believed that the Antarctic creatures were not affected by the danger due to the continent's extreme weather. 37 She and some colleagues decided to examine samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. 38 If they missed catching a skua — a gull-like bird at first go, the bird never came close again. It took the scientists four years, from 2008 -2011, to collect fecal (粪便)samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. 39 The results of their study proved the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste. “ While we should do as much as possible to reduce the chance to pass it on, it's hard to believe that we will stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won't continue to spread pathogens (病原体),” said Kyle Elliott. Experts, including Gonzalez-Solis, believe the only way to prevent the mass destruction of the birds, is to introduce stricter regulations. 40 While the Antarctica Treaty states clearly visitors carry their waste back home to 英语(二)第 7 页(共 9 页) |全国 I 卷| protect the original environment, the regulation is rarely obeyed.
