While Nick was on the bus, reading his newspaper, the man sitting next to him suddenly pushed a large
envelope into his hands. “Here, take this!” the man said, stood up and got off the bus before Nick could say a
word.
Nick sat there, holding the envelope. It felt heavy. There were papers inside, or money perhaps. “I’d better
hand it over to the police,” he thought. There was a police station close to his office. But, as he got off the bus, a
man came to him. He seemed to be waiting for something. “He wants the envelope,” Nick thought. Nick began to
walk quickly, and the man hurried after him. Nick started to run, and the man began to run, too. But then, just
before he got to the police station, Nick managed to lose the man in the crowds. When he entered the police
station, the man was no longer in sight.
Inside the police station, Nick handed over the envelope to a policeman in charge. The man opened it. The
envelope was full of money, false money. “Clearly the man made a mistake,” the policeman said. “He thought you
were one of the gang (团伙)!”
Nick felt like a hero. He could already see his name in all the papers. He could imagine an interview on
television.
“However,” the policeman went on, “I’m afraid I must ask you to keep quiet about all this. We’re trying to
catch some very clever thieves, and we don’t want them to know that we have some of the money. So you mustn’t
say a word to anyone—not even your boss!”

Shopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for
that particular brand (品牌) of product on the shelf.
Colouring, for example, varies according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packaged
in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and
expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver.
When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the
customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually, it came on the market in a
dark blue and white package — blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.
The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as it appears to.
It is believed that the better-known companies spend, on average, 70 percent of the total cost of the product
itself on packaging!
The most successful producers know that it’s not enough to have a good product. The founder of Pears soap,5
who for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote (推销) their goods, came to the conclusion: “Any fool can
make soap, but it takes a genius to sell it.”
48. Which of the following may trick a shopper into buying a product according to the text?
A. The cost of its package.
B. The price of the product.
C. The colour of its package.
D. The brand name of the product.
49. The underlined part “the colours turned the customers off” (in Para.3) means that the colours .
A. attracted the customers strongly
B. had weak effects on the customers
C. tricked the customers into shopping
D. caused the customers to lose interest
50. Which of the following is the key to the success in product sales?
A. The discovery of a genius.
B. The way to promote goods.
C. The team to produce a good product.
D. The brand name used by successful producers.
51. Which of the following would be the best title for this text?
A. Choice of Good Products
B. Disadvantages of Products
C. Brand Names and Shopping Tricks
D. Effect of Packaging on Shopping

Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile (机动车) is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the
not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned ( 放 弃 ) and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however,
think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable
future.
The car will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and
more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more
pollution-free than present types.
Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic jams. One
proposed solution to this problem is the automated ( 自 动 化 的 ) highway system. When the auto enters the
highway system, a retractable ( 可 伸 缩 的 ) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is
similar to those powering subway trains electrically.
Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle
will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car’s movements.
The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination ( 目 的 地 ) into the system. The
computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the
highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer that will warn him of his coming exit. It is
estimated (估计) that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the
1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.
52. One significant improvement in the future car will probably be .
A. its power source B. its driving system
C. its monitoring system D. its seating space
53. What is the author’s main concern?6
A. How to make automobiles pollution-free.
B. How to make smaller and safer automobiles.
C. How to solve the problem of traffic jams.
D. How to develop an automated subway system.
54. What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system?
A. A rail. B. An engine. C. A retractable arm. D. A computer controller.
55. In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is .
A. keep in the right route
B. wait to arrive at his destination
C. inform the system of his destination by phone
D. keep in constant touch with the computer center
第二节:(共5小题:每小题2分, 满分 10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Studying longer does not necessarily mean studying better. 56 Below are some great ways of
learning as much as you can without getting too stressed.
Find the right place to study.
The first thing you need to do is avoid distractions ( 分散注意力的事物) while studying. 57 You
should keep away from television sets and phone calls. Get all of your study materials together, so you will not be
interrupted in the middle of your session.
Break down the tasks into smaller parts.
When you have gotten everything ready, list the items you need to study, and arrange them across several
hours or days, depending on how big your load is. As a general rule, assign ( 分 配 ) at least one hour to each
subject. 58 By doing this, you will be able to know more easily how long you need for each topic.
Schedule study breaks.
When you have listed all of your tasks and made a schedule, you should arrange ( 安 排 ) study breaks. 59
This will give your eyes some time to rest, and yourself a chance to go to the bathroom or have some coffee.
Scheduled breaks will reduce the need for you to interrupt yourself to the lowest level during the study session.
Put your tasks in order of importance.
60 Just in case you run out of time to study, or if you think you do not have enough time to cover all
topics, you should study in an order.
A. Each break may take about 15 minutes every two hours.
B. Learn to arrange the subjects in order of importance.
C. This means going to one place that will give you peace and quiet.
D. The key to efficient studying is following the schedule strictly.
E. You can find a way to test your knowledge by having a study partner.
F. If you have a broad subject, you will need to break it down into smaller parts.
G. To make the best use of your time, you need to learn how to study efficiently (高效地).7
