Part-time jobs for 15 and 16 years olds
Waiter / Waitress
A job as a waiter or waitress is a good choice for 16-year-olds. Not only can one earn $9-$12 an hour, but
they can also get the tips (小费). Most people that visit a restaurant don’t just have good food. They come here
to relax and have a good time. Besides serving food quickly, a young waiter who talks to them politely with a
smile on his face will make the diners enjoy their time at the restaurant.
Work in a library
If one is fond of books, working in a library is another suitable choice. Besides the pay is good, it offers a
lot of free time when students can actually sit down and finish their homework. So on returning home, they
would have time to hang around with friends or just relax. So working in a library is an excellent part-time job
for teens, especially for school students.
Internet jobs
There are many ways of making money through online jobs like clicking on advertisements, visiting sites
and signing up with them. However, such online jobs don’t pay well. A better Internet job for teens is to
complete online surveys. These are quite simple surveys that usually ask one about his/ her opinions and ideas.
Many companies use these ideas to make products designed for teenagers.
26. What does the writer think of the job as a waiter/waitress?
A. It needs a period of training.
B. It pays much more than other jobs.
C. It can improve one’s leadership skills.
D. Making diners comfortable is part of the job.
27. A student who is busy with his research paper will probably choose to work ______.
A. in a restaurant B. in a library C. on the Internet D. in an IT company
28. Why do some companies ask the teens to do surveys?
A. The teens have more free time.
B. They can pay less to the teens.
C. They need advice to make products for teens.
D. The teens usually express their true opinions.
B
We found him a few weeks ago when we were walking along the country road. He was jumping around between
cars. We thought maybe his family was camping somewhere nearby, so we passed him by. A few hours later, on our
return trip, he was still there, trying to get someone to stop for him.
We stopped and took a good look at him. He had no collar (项圈) and he was really thin. We guessed that he
was abandoned (遗弃). He was clearly on the road for some time. He was covered with scars and new wounds. We
thought that some of them were from fights with wild dogs or other wild animals.
So we took him home, cleaned him and fed him a lot over the next two weeks. He gained over 10 pounds. Then
we took him to the vet, who said he appeared to be in good health. The vet said the dog was about two or three years
of age, according to the condition of his teeth. And the vet gave him all the required shots. We really loved this dog. He had obviously been mistreated but he was still so sweet. He had no manners, but he
was a quick learner. He no longer tried to get on the bed, but he liked sitting in the chair. We thought he wanted to
avoid being underfoot when our daughter was dancing, which she did often. She had stepped on him a few times.
When that happened, he simply moved. He did not growl (狂吠) or bare his teeth.
Since then, he had become a member of our family.
29. When the author first saw the dog, it_________.
A. was in poor health
B. was dying from serious wounds
C. was fighting with some wild dogs
D. was looking around for his family
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The dog was abandoned on purpose.
B. The author’s daughter did not like the dog.
C. The dog was well treated by the author’s family.
D. It cost the author much to treat the dog’s disease.
31. The author writes the passage to_________.
A. look for the dog’s owner
B. introduce a new family member
C. show the friendship between humans and animals
D. express her dissatisfaction with those who abandon dogs

We don’t know when and where the next earthquake will hit. But we do know the importance of safety and
preparation. The only way to be ready for the unexpected is to prepare ahead of time. It’s especially important if you
live in earthquake zones. So here are some important steps to build your own Earthquake Action Plan.
1. Talk to your friends and families and decide on a place to meet if you’re separated after an earthquake.
2. Make an emergency (紧急情况) communication plan in case cell towers or phone lines are down. You can also ask
relatives or friends outside your area to be your contacts (联系人).
3. Locate a safe place in every room of your house and discuss with your families the safest places to be during an
earthquake. Remember, if you’re:
a. Inside, get under something heavy like a study table or against an inside wall and cover your head.
b. Outside, stay away from buildings and get out into the open.
c. In your car, stop and stay in your seat. If you’re stopped near a building or under an overpass (天桥), try to safely
move away from it.
4. Store first-aid kits (急救箱) anywhere you spend a lot of time (house, car, workplace, etc.).
5. Pack plenty of batteries, flashlights, and bottles of water to prepare for power outages and water shortages.
6. Review your home’s important systems (electrical, gas, water, etc.) and know how to operate them or shut them off
in an emergency.
Although they’re somewhat unusual, earthquakes are incredibly terrible, overwhelming, and unpredictable
forces of nature. But with some knowledge and preparation, we can mitigate risks and do the best we can to keep
ourselves and our families safe.

B. making sure that you have contacts out your area
C. practicing how to escape with your families
D. finding safe places in your house
