The moment happened 30 years ago but it was still fresh in my memory. I was a college freshman and had
(13) up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids
were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few
minutes’ nap (小睡) time before class couldn’t (14), I thought.
BOOM! I lifted my head suddenly and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my (15)
beating wildly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking at me with a boyish (孩子气的)
smile on his face. He had (16) dropped the textbooks he was carrying onto his desk. “Good morning!”, he said
still smiling. “I am glad to see everyone is awake. Now let’s get started.”
For the next hour I wasn’t sleepy at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’ s textbook alarm clock. It was
instead from the fascinating (有吸引力的) discussion he led. With knowledge and good (17) he made the
material come (18). His insight was full of both wisdom and loving-kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy that
he taught with were contagious (有感染力的). I (19) the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and
a little better as well.3 4
I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are going to do
something in this life, do it well, do it with (20). What a wonderful place this would be if all of us did our work
joyously and well. Don’t sleepwalk (梦游) your way through life then. Wake up! Let your love fill your work. Life is
too short not to live it well.

Steve Jobs was the former CEO of the Apple computer company which was set up in his parents’ garage (车库) on
April Fool’ s Day, 1976. Through many years’ hard work, Jobs and his Apple products were a great success. People
believe he has made the world a better place. Many young people also think of Apple products as a fashion icon.
Because of his great achievements in this area, he was honored with a number of awards, including the National
Medal of Technology in 1985, the Times cover character and the Most Successful Manager in 1997. Jobs’ road to success
wasn’t an easy one. He experienced several ups and downs, but he was still standing. Just as Hemingway in The Old
Man and the Sea said, “A man can be destroyed, but not be defeated (击败). So he was considered as an American hero.”
What did Jobs’ workers and family members think of him?
On one hand, some workers described him as a strange, bad-tempered (坏脾气的) boss. They said he was impatient
with those who disagreed with him or didn’t understand his ideas. On the other hand, his family members thought of him
as a home-loving dad with each of his four children. He worried about all the things of them, such as their boyfriends,
travel, safety and even skirt length. Though he was quite busy, he still attended his daughter’ s graduation party.

As a child growing, father is the earliest and longest adult males it can contact with. So, fathers play an important
role in the development of children. One researcher says babies who are cared for by their fathers have greater cognitive
development at one year of age than babies not cared for by their fathers. Another researcher reports that by spending
time with their preschool children, fathers can help to develop children’s language ability. Researchers also point out
that for school-age children, fathers are one bridge with the outside world.
Fathers play an important role in making children form a good personality and habit. Fathers’ personality always
carries more than mothers’, such as daring, the courage to overcome difficulties and cooperative (合作的) ability. With
the continuous communication between children and fathers, children may learn from their fathers by environment and
the fathers may teach children with their own ideas. What’s more, fathers who spend quality time with their children
may give their children happy memories which may last a lifetime. Although each father is a unique person who educates
children in his own style, good fathers have something in common. Good fathers attend their children’s school activities.
They also involve the children in their lives and the adult world by taking them to see the workplace, or by taking them
when the car needs to be repaired.
Good fathers know their time with children is really an investment in them. Being an involved father is good for
children and good for fathers. Both children and fathers have the chance for growth and development. Today’s lifestyles
are changing. More and more fathers are keeping a balance between their personal life, work, and family time.
27. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Good fathers attend their children’ s school activities but never take them to their workplace.
B. Good fathers expect a great deal from their children and push them to work hard.
C. Good fathers try to make it clear to their children that staying with their fathers is an investment.
D. Good fathers improve themselves when they spend time with their children.
28. What’ s fathers’ personality that is different from mothers’?
A. They give more love to children in their daily life.
B. They are much more careful than mothers.
C. They will meet more difficulties in the life.
D. They are better at cooperating with others.
29. What’ s the passage mainly about?
A. How to be a good father.
B. The growth and development of both fathers and children.
C. The fathers’ role in the growth and development of children.
D. The change of the fathers’ role in modern society.
D
Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among
people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it’s because we have mirror neurons (神经元) in our brains.
Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains
imitate (模仿) it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to
smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical
actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.
Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability
to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly7 8
to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: “The
hand took hold of the ball”), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this
example, actually taking hold of a ball).
Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people
with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning. However, it is not yet known
exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.
Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information concerning how humans behave and
interact (互动). Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent (相等物) for neuroscience of what Einstein’s theory of
relativity was for physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the cinema when someone else does — well,
perhaps you’ll understand why.
30. Mirror neurons can explain .
A. why we cry when we are hurt
B. why we cough when we suffer from a cold
C. why we smile when we see someone else smile
D. why we yawn when we see someone else stay up late
31. The underlined word “triggered” in the third paragraph probably means “ ”.
A. set off B. cut off C. built up D. broken up
32. We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons .
A. relate to human behavior and interaction
B. control human physical actions and feelings
C. result in bad behavior and social disorders
D. determine our knowledge and language abilities
33. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Ways to find mirror neurons. B. Problems of mirror neurons.
C. Existence of mirror neurons. D. Functions of mirror neurons.
四、阅读短文,回答问题(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,共 10 分,阅读下列短文,根据短文内容回答问题。)
Self-images are our own mind’s pictures of ourselves. These images (意象) include the way we look, the way we
act, the way we talk and the way we think. When we find that believing in ourselves is a bit hard, it is time we build
positive (积极的) self-images and learn to have happy lives.
Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unluckily, most of
these images are more negative (消极的) than they should be. Thus changing the way we think about ourselves is the
key to change our self-images and our whole world.
The best way to destroy a passive (被动的) self-image is to step back and decide to pay attention to our successes.
That is, make a list if we need to, but write down all of the great things we do every day. Don’t allow doubts to happen
on us.
It very well might be that we are experiencing negative self-images because we can’t move past the weakness that
we see about ourselves. Well, make a change of it as our primary tasks. If we think we’re silly because we aren’t good
at math, find someone to help us. If we think we’re weak because we can’t run a mile, get more practice. But remember,
what we think doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that our images are far from the goals, and to actively
make ourselves believe that we have positive personalities. Changing the way we think and working on those we need
to improve will go a long way to create new positive self-images. When we can pat ourselves on the back, we’ll know
we’re well on our way.
34. Does self-images include the way we talk?
35. When do we need to build positive self-images?
36. What’s the key to change our self-images?
37. How can we destroy passive self-images?
