BThe shortage of professional physics teachers is severe across the United States, with just 47
percent of physics teacher having physics degrees, according to the National Science Foundation.
This has led to teachers with little-to-no physics training taking over physics classrooms, which
causes stress and job dissatisfaction for those teachers and a difficult learning experience for
their students.
But new research indicates that focused physics professional development for teachers can be
salutary for both students and teachers. It can offer teachers better teaching experience and also
improve students’ understanding of physics concepts.
Justina Ogodo, the study’s author and postdoctoral researcher recalled her being a physics
student in high school, and being uninspired by education she received. “I truly hated physics,
because my teacher would speak to the board ——he would teach the board,” she said. “I
imagined some students were also having the same experience as I had, because the teachers
didn’t have the pedagogical (教学法的) skills to teach physics.”
To understand how a teacher’s subject-matter knowledge could affect a student’s ability to learn
and understand, Justina Ogodo followed a group of advanced-placement physics teacher
through physics professional development, and then compared their teaching practices and
student outcomes with AP teachers who did not attend the courses.
Before the training, Ogodo found most teachers used “traditional, teacher-centered methods” to
teach. Those methods include lectures, note-taking and problem-solving activities. However,
teachers who completed the training course were more likely to use conceptual learning
techniques to teach their students — a method driven by inquiry-based (探究式的) teaching and
learning, along with hands-on labs to help students see the real-world applications of the
theories they learned. The teachers who did not complete the training, Ogodo found, continued
to fall back on lectures and standardized labs.

Zebra finches (斑胸草雀) usually learn to sing from their fathers. But now, scientists have taught
the little birds to memorize a tune without ever learning it — and they did so by inserting memories of the song into the birds’ brain.
This strange experiment was designed to first discover the brain pathways that encode (加密)
note duration in the birds. Eventually, the point is to draw parallels with how humans learn to
speak. Hopefully, the research will help scientists target genes and cells to improve language
learning in people with conditions that affect the process of making a sound with voice.
“This is the first time we have confirmed brain regions that encode behavioral-goal memories
——those memories that guide us humans when we want to imitate ( 模 仿 ) anything from
speech to learning the piano,” Todd Roberts, a neuroscientist, said in a statement. “The finding
enabled us to insert these memories into the birds and guide the learning of their song.”
Zebra finches are small, social birds native to Central America and popular as pets. They listen to
their fathers sing and then practice the tunes. The new research shows how the animals pull it
off.
Roberts and his colleagues used a special tool to adjust the finches’ brain cells without ever
exposing them to singing. This technique involves using light to control the behavior of proteins
that are sensitive to light in brain cells, essentially allowing researchers to control when a nerve
cell fires. Using this tool, the researchers were able to change brain activity in an area known as
Nif, which sends information to a songbird’s particular brain region called the HVC. This area is
involved in both learning and reproducing bird songs.
By controlling light pulses in a rhythm (节奏), the researchers were able to encode “memories” in
the finches’ brains, so that the birds’ notes would match the duration of the light pulses. It was
as if a father finch were making these instructions for the bird to memorize, but no father finch
was present.
8. What’s the future application of the experiment’s finding?
A. Improve communication between humans and birds.
B. Enable some birds to learn songs from human beings.
C. Help with language learning for those unable to speak.
D. Find out the secret behind birds’ ability to produce sound.
9. Which of the following might Todd Roberts agree with?
A. Zebra finches and humans have similar ways of learning.
B. Zebra finches have many other abilities besides singing.
C. The finding of the research is somewhat worrying.
D. The brain is a very complex organ to study.
10. What’s the function of the brain area Ni^
A. To hide some proteins from light.
B. To control the activity in the HVC.
C. To encode birds’ memories in the brain.
D. To expose light to the rhythm of a song.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To show the skills of learning a language.
B. To compare the results of two experiments.
C. To encourage people to protect zebra finches.
D. To introduce a scientific research achievement.
DFactories in Tianjin are producing over 80 million bicycles annually, with its production
worldwide growing much faster than that of automobiles. In 1968, we produced about the same
number of bikes and cars — today we make two and a half times as many bicycles. Cycling
enthusiasts cheer for this comeback, while feeling sad about the terrible state of cycling
infrastructure (基础设施) in most countries.
If you uncover the surface, however, you will find great differences in the use of bicycles and the
identity of cyclists from country to country. In China and India, the former Empires of Bicycling,
most citizens are crazy about motorized vehicles and press for the removal of cycle lanes to
make room for more cars. In contrast, in most Western countries, there are calls for more bicycle
lanes.
There is a need, therefore, to look more critically at this resurrection (复兴) of the bicycle. It is
used in multiple ways and some of its personalities are unfriendly. It is, for instance, used both
for work and for play. Indeed, much of the recent rise of cycling treats bicycles as entertainment
machines rather than transportation tools. Many cycle races use numerous vehicles to transport
bicycles to a starting point, but there is not much evidence that this converts the riders into
everyday cyclists.
The confrontational (易引起冲突的) character of the bicycle has actually been with us almost
from day one. The walking machines that populated the streets of London in 1819 faced pressure
from pedestrians to be banned from the pavements, while cab drivers wanted them to be
excluded from the roadways. So from the beginning, a cyclist’s right to the road has been a huge
struggle.
The obvious solution is to develop good cycling routes separated from motorized traffic and
available for both entertainment and transportation cycling. They cost, but far less than vehicular
roadways do, and the health benefits of cycling more than compensate for these costs.
12. What’s the current situation of bicycle production?
A. It is increasing in large numbers.
B. It is faced with much disapproval.
C. It goes hand in hand with car production.
D. It makes people concerned about the traffic.
13. According to the text, what is most Chinese and Indian people’s attitude towards bicycles?
A. Worrying. B. Negative.
C. Welcoming. D. Indifferent.
14. What was it like in London in 1819?
A. Cyclists didn’t have enough right to the road.
B. People could drive anywhere on the road.
C. Bikes were forbidden on the pavements.
D. Cars became quite popular.
15. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. Measures for reducing traffic jams.
B. Ways to make bicycles popular.
C. Bicycle or car, which is better?
D. The resurrection of bicycles.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Having depression makes a person lose interest in nearly all the things he used to like. When you
have a friend that’s going through depression, you’re probably worried about him. 16 Here is
some advice about motivating someone who is struggling with depression.
Be their emotional support. People with depression have a tendency to overthink and this is
especially true for late nights. 17 When they’re talking badly about themselves and saying that
nobody loves them, remind them that you’re there to love them.
18 When you advise them to do something, it shouldn’t be something that you’re making them
do. People with depression never want to be forced to do things outside of their comfort zone.
Instead, empathize (产生共鸣) with what they’re going through and make them feel like what
you are advising them to do is just an option.
Be yourself. You shouldn’t have to act differently around them. This isn’t going to motivate them
to make progress. Rather, stay true to whom you are while still being empathetic to their
emotions. 19
Ask them to hangout. Even if there’s a probability that they’re going to say no, you should still
ask them to hang out with you. Even the thought that you ask them out is going to lift their
spirits. 20 It also lets them feel loved and normal.
A. Don’t push them to do things.
B. Please do something special for them.
C. The best way to motivate them is to be there for them.
D. This invitation lets them know you still want to stay with them.
E. It does motivate them as long as you stay comfortably with them.
F. You may want to do something to take this kind of burden off his shoulders.
G. It is really hard for them to walk out of their house and make an appointment with you.

书面表达 (One possible version)
Dear Chris,
I’m honored that you’re interested in traditional Chinese art and culture and desire to
participate in our Art Festival. The performance art I recommend to you is our traditional martial
art, Tai chi. It’s popular with both the young and the old. Doing Tai chi can make a person more
flexible and healthy. In addition, it’s relatively easier to play compared to many other forms of
traditional Chinese performance art. If you’d like it, I want to perform it together with you. We
can watch relevant videos to learn how to do Tai chi and ask my PE teacher to give us some tips.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
