Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only
girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six
brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated ( 躲
避 ) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because
she was too shy to participate.
In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her
grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college
because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college,
but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join
the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university’s Writers’
Workshop, however, she felt lonely - a Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among
students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “creative
voice”.
“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired
a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with why I felt so
much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That’s when I decided I would write
about something my classmates couldn’t write about.”
Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The
book talks about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago,
much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and
has been used in classes from high school to graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has
published several books of poetry, a children’s book, and a short-story collection.
24. What can we know about Cisneros in her childhood?
A. Her brothers disliked her. B. She felt herself a nobody.
C. She was too shy to go to school. D. She did not meet any good teachers.
25.The graduate program gave Cisneros a chance to .
A. run away from her family B. develop her writing style
C. make a lot of friends D. search for a husband 26.According
to Cisneros, what was the key factor in her success?
A. Her childhood experience. B. Her training in the Workshop.
C. Her feeling of being different. D. Her early years in college.
27.What do we learn about The House on Mango Street?
A. It enjoys great popularity among students.
B. It is a book of poetry written by Cisneros.
C. It wasn’t a success as it was written in Spanish.
D. It won an award when Cisneros was twenty-nine.

Flight cancellations( 取 消 ) and loss of luggage can ruin even the best-planned holiday.
The key to a stress-free trip is having a backup plan.
Fly non-stop. The worst problems involve connections, so it is important to take non-stop
flights whenever possible. If you do have to make a connection, try to route through a southern
city, where snowstorms and de-icing delays will be less likely. Always allow at least two to three
hours for flight connections.
Check the weather. Check the weather in your connecting city, not just the arrival and
departure city. If your departure flight is cancelled because of weather, you can go home or back to
your hotel. Airlines promise to get you on the next available flight, not the next flight. That could
be several days later on a sold-out holiday weekend.
Go early. The earlier in the day you fly, the better your chance of getting rebooked the same
day after a missed connection. It will also put you ahead of stranded(滞留的) passengers who
arrive later.
Rebook immediately. As soon as your flight is delayed or cancelled, get on the phone and
rebook your flight instead of waiting at the ticket counter. If your rebooking is delayed, call or ask
your travel agent to find a seat on another carrier, and then ask your original carrier to endorse your
ticket to the new airline. Airlines are not required to do this but often do. Learn more at www. dot.
gov/ airconsumer/ fly-rights.
Ship bags. A few days before your flight, ship suitcases or holiday gifts to your destination by a
documented express service. It’s preferable to losing bags because of re-routed flights and
sometimes cheaper than paying airline overweight bag fees.
Know your rights. Airlines are not required to compensate passengers for delayed or cancelled
flights, but it never hurts to ask for goodwill vouchers( 折 扣 ) for meals, taxis or a room.
28. When making a flight connection, it’s common that you’ll .
A. stop in the south B. choose a good city without snowstorm
C. be trapped in the storm D. wait for two or three hours 29.The
suggested way for you to rebook your flight is .
A. through the phone B. by waiting at the ticket counter
C. by changing another airline D. by surfing the Internet
30.The underlined word “compensate” in the last paragraph can be replaced by
“ ”.
A. pay B. ask C. host D. treat
31.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Worst Problem in the Trip. B. The Preparation Before the Flight Trip.
C. How to Book the Plane Ticket. D. How to Plan the Holiday.

In Africa, Christmas Day begins with groups of carolers (欢唱颂歌的人) walking to and
from through the village, along the roadway, by the houses of the missionaries ( 传教士), singing
the lovely carols known to the world around. Often people may be awakened by a group of carolers
beginning to gather at the house of worship( 敬 神 活 动 ). They return home to make final
preparations as to the clothes one must wear and also as to their offering for the Christmas service.
The most important part of their Christmas worship service is the love offering. This is the
gift in honor of Jesus. At about 8 or 9 o’clock everyone goes to the celebration of the birthday of
Jesus. Everyone who attends the service goes forward to lay down their gift upon the raised
platform near the Communion table. No one will attend the service without giving a gift.
Christmas in South Africa is a summer holiday. There is no snow, but it has many flowers,
many beautiful varieties of wild flowers being in their full pride.
In Ghana, most churches show the coming of Christmas by decorating the church and homes
beginning with the first week in Advent, four weeks before Christmas. This season happens to be
the time of cocoa harvest, so it is a time of wealth. Everyone returns home from wherever they
might be such as farms or mines.
In Africa, it is the traditional dinner of turkey, roast beef, mince pies, or suckling pig, yellow
rice with raisins, vegetables, and plum pudding, crackers. In the afternoon, families go out into the
country and usually there are games or bathing in the warm sunshine, and then home in the cool of
the evening. Boxing Day is also a proclaimed ( 正式宣布的) public holiday usually spent in the
open air. It falls on December 26 and is a day of real relaxation.

How to Love Your Parents
Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal

unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from
them for when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your
parents. Act calmly, cool off, journal about your feelings, or talk to a friend.37 .
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It
may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean.
However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining,
snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes.38 .Since
you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?
Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere
with them.39 .Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find
they are your teachers in this way or another.
Some people simply may not be able to love their parents.40 .Seek help if you are
being abused in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you.
A. Forgiveness is the key.
B. Tell them you love them every morning.
C. Parents will in turn express their love to you.
D. After this, share your feelings with your parents.

Dear John,
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear John,
I learned from the Internet that the bookstore near our school is looking for a part-time worker. I
am wondering whether you will be interested in it.
To begin with, working in the bookstore will provide you with more chances to meet people, which
may improve your social skill in communication while knowing more local residents and their life.
Secondly, dealing with different customers and meeting various requirements may enrich your
working experience. Lastly, you can earn some pocket money by yourself.
There will be an interview next Friday. I hope you can have a try and I’m sure it is rewarding.
Yours,
Li Hua
