M: You will soon fall in love with the subject.
Text 3
W: I am surprised you would apply for a position at our company. I didn’t think you knew
anything about computers.
M: Did you read my resume? If so, you’d see that I majored in computer science.
W: Oh, I’m sorry. I must have picked up the wrong application.
Text 4
W: Dad, I want to be a nurse when I grow up.

says she enjoys helping people.
W: I want to help people, too.
Text 5
W: When was the last time you got cash from an ATM?

find out what’s going on.

W: We have 30.
M: That’s a lot of people. Do they all come to your house? If so, you’ll be pretty busy with
preparing!
W: That’s why I’m so surprised that it’s already December. I will be really busy for the rest of the

M: That sounds stressful. My Christmas plans should be simpler. My parents will join me in

Text 9
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, my son and daughter bought this pen for my wife’s birthday, but it doesn’t work. I would
like to exchange it for a new one.
W: Let me see. Was it dropped?
M: No, but you can see that the point is bent a little bit.
W: Yes, it is. We’d be happy to exchange it for you, but I’m afraid we don’t have any more purple
ones. We only have this pen in black or yellow now.
M: My wife doesn’t really like either of those colors.
W: We have one with a red leather cover. That’s three dollars more.
M: The children worked hard to save up the 20 dollars for this one. They would probably be upset
if I paid for their present.
W: If you want, we can order another pen just like this one.
M: Could you? That would be great! Thanks so much.
W: We’d be happy to. It will take a week to 10 days. We’ll call you when it comes in.
Text 10
W: If you love books, don’t miss Shakespeare and Company when you visit Paris. It is a famous
English-language bookstore on the left bank of the river Seine. The first Shakespeare and
Company was opened in 1919 by Sylvia Beach. Ms Beach did more than sell books. Her
bookstore was also a library, and she even prepared beds for visiting writers. Ms Beach was not
only kind to people but also good at choosing books, so her bookstore was often visited by writers
like Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. But in 1941, after the Germans took power in Paris, Ms
Beach was told to close her bookstore. In 1951, another American, George Whitman, opened his
own English-language bookstore in Paris. Just like Ms Beach, Mr Whitman allowed people to
borrow books and offered a place for visiting writers to sleep. To remember Ms Beach, Mr
Whitman changed the name of his bookstore to Shakespeare and Company in 1964, two years
after she died. Next time you are in Paris, don’t forget to visit this friendly bookstore. Maybe you
can even spend the night!第二部分 阅读理解

Hi Chris,
How are you and your family doing these days? My trip to America has come to an end, and
now I’m writing to express my most sincere appreciation to you and your family.
Firstly, I’ll have to say that your considerate arrangements for my accommodation and dining
added so much to my journey. I did not only enjoy your home’s cozy atmosphere, but gained
essential knowledge of American culture. Being immersed in such an open and colorful culture
was such a pleasure! And I was more than happy to share my summer holiday with such a kind
and harmonious family as yours.
What’s more, I’d like to extend to your family an invitation to China next year! My family
appreciated your hospitality and help, and they are ready to welcome all of you wholeheartedly.
I’m also eager to show you my own culture. Embracing Chinese culture surely will enhance our
friendship and truly pay your family back!
What do you think of my suggestion? Please keep me informed of your decision! Write back
soon!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
