What will restaurants look like in the future? What would your dinner taste like if a robot cooked
it? A robot restaurant in Tianjin may give you the answers.
Covering an area of over 400 square meters with a total of 112 seats, the X Future Restaurant is a
robot restaurant opened in November 2018. The restaurant has amazed customers with its fully-
automated(全自动的)technology, which covers every step of the dining experience, from ordering to

Entering the restaurant, one can order dishes by simply scanning the QR codes on the table. There

Robots also complete the delivery of dishes. Without following any designed route, the robot waiters
serve meals thanks to automated driving technology, which helps each robot timely change its route
when something is in the way.
These eye-catching technologies have received wide praise from customers. “The dishes taste
surprisingly good. I couldn’t believe that they were made by robots, especially dishes that were difficult

Many kids help out around the house with chores(家庭杂务) such as emptying the dishwasher,
putting laundry away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances or other rewards
such as extra computer time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a
parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that
work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of household is a team
effort,” Susie said, “a home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that
we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together how they want their home to
look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look.”
Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and
it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new
applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑取) either online or in the real
world. With the Chore Monster app kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in
for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. “Our goal is to encourage kids to earn
rewards” says Chris Bergman, founder of Chore Monster, “Kids need positive reinforcement to help
motivate them.”
What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their
homes without getting anything in return? Write a 200-word response. Send it to
tfkasks4you@timeforkids.com. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids.
Please include your grade and contact information of your parent or teacher if you want your response to
be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.

A. Kids should be rewarded for doing chores.
B. Kids have the responsibility to share housework.
C. Parents decide what kids can do for the family.
D. Kids can get extra computer time for doing chores.
26. The purpose of writing the text is to .
A. call on readers to reflect on their behavior B. inform readers of two different opinions
C. present the author’s viewpoint about parenting D. invite readers to express their opinions

Reading a book can enlarge the imagination, support independent thinking and widen a person’s
world. Writing a book can do even more. Educators now are using book-writing to help students develop
creativity and a love of reading at an early age. This is a third grade classroom at Taylor Elementary school in Arlington, Virginia. The students of
eight or nine years old are busy writing, making pictures and talking with their teacher. And today, each
student is working on writing a story.
Creating a book begins with the children finding the ideas that interest them. Then they write the
first version (版本). After that, they edit their work, which means to make corrections and changes. In
the process students learn to think like real writers.
Holly Karapetkova writes children’s books and teaches literature at Marymount University in
Arlington. She says she is happy that her 8-year-old son K. J. and his classmates are writing books at
school. She thinks creating books sends them back to books. It encourages them to read more, both the
books they are creating and other books.
Creating books is one of her favorite activities at home with K. J. and his 3-year-old sister, Kalina.
“We have made books about animals about weather, a lot of books about letters and numbers to reinforce
skills. One of our favorite kinds of books to make is an alphabet book, just with a simple letter, then
pictures, either pictures that we print out from our real photos or pictures that the children draw to match
those letters.” She says the way to keep children interested in creating books is to give them freedom of
choice.
K. J. has written more than 12 books on different subjects. His mother hopes the skills he and Kalina
are developing — writing, reading, thinking, imagining — will help them succeed in the 21st century job
market.
27. What’s the first step to write a book for the children?
A. Writing the first description. B. Changing some details in the book.
C. Correcting the mistakes in the story. D. Deciding on an interesting subject.

What Recycling Will Look Like in 10 Years
As businesses rush to become greener, this is what recycling may look like a decade from now. Tobegin with, more goods will be made of existing materials. The increase in the reuse of existing
materials, including recycled plastics, glass and more will reduce the demand for raw materials. You’ll
find more clothing, toys, park benches, etc. made of recycled water bottles.
resources will be kept in circulation (流通) with no end.
31 . Thus all
Reusable products will become more popular. Not only will companies take up the duty to reduce
waste. 32 . Take single-use straws (吸管), for example. They’ve been banned everywhere
because they are so bad for the environment and wildlife. Furthermore, beginning in 2021 the European
Union will ban single-use plastics. 33 ; we also need to change consumers’ habits by changing
the way they think about single-use plastics.
Chemical recycling may become common. Though the field is still in its early stages, the process of
chemical recycling may increase in the coming years. 34 . “This is all just a huge expensive
business,” Denise Patel said, adding that reducing the overall use of plastic is a better solution.
35 . Currently, thin plastic isn’t often recycled. As it’s so lightweight, it can jam recycling
machinery;but throwing it out isn’t ideal either. After all, it takes about 450 years to break down. You
can return it to a store that collects them, or use a service that picks up hard-to-recycle items from your
home for a fee.
A. We cannot rely only on recycling
B. New plastic is cheaper than recycled plastic
C. However, chemical recycling is not without disagreement
D. This creates an economy where no resource will be wasted
E. In the future, thin plastics will be recycled more readily
F. Individuals will also be expected to use more reusable products

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was ten years old. He
was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first
he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud,
but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop,” someone shouted. Then a thick burning
smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke
greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the
door and along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped in
her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing,
but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they call Makcik.
Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could
see many of their neighbors — some still in their pajama—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed
his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I
know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she
would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

应用文写作
Dear readers,
I’m glad to stand here and give a short speech on protecting wild animals. According to many statistics, we
have realized that a large number of wild animals have been killed for their meat, skins and fur. As a result, so
many kinds of animals have either died out or become endangered.
As a matter of fact, protecting wild animals benefits not only those animals but humans ourselves. For
example, if too many frogs are killed, our corn and grain will be destroyed by harmful insects and rats. It is those
frogs that prevent the number of harmful insects from increasing.
As for me, I have volunteered to call on more people to protect them and at the same time we should ask our
students to take part in the activities of protecting wild animals. Meanwhile, our government should also take
active measures.
Let’s take action to protect wild animals from now on! Thank you!
