Accommodation Zones
Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones2,3 and 4 of the transport
system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre as much of central London is
commercial and not residential( 居 住 的 ). Zones3 and 4 often offer larger
accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by
Underground.
Meal Plans Available
♢ Continental Breakfast
♢ Breakfast and Dinner
♢ Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked
breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists

meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually
consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.
Friends

permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel
it is an invasion of their privacy.
Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom
facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an
independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does
not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit
those who need to practise English at home quite as much.

As a young African-American male growing up in the housing projects of the
South Bronx, Schone Malliet never ever dreamed of skiing---a sport typically associated
with wealthy people. Then in his 20s, he found himself at the top of a ski slope in Park
City, Utah, having been “dragged there” by his mate of the Marine Corps (海军陆战
队), in which Malliet was doing a seven-year stint(兵役) that he ultimately parlayed
(成功地获得) into a college education and also an MBA. Despite his strong athleticism,
Malliet experienced what many adults who weren’t exposed to skiing as children:
awkwardness, discouragement, embarrassment, and a feeling of not quite belonging.
Nevertheless, after Malliet left the Corps for a successful career in business and
finance, he gave skiing another shot, and this time, he took hold along with a powerful
idea: what if people of color, and especially children of color, had no reason to feel out
of place on a ski mountain? Nice idea, but who was going to believe it right? And who
was going to pay for all those kids to get to the mountains, let alone have access to the
necessary gear, clothing, and equipment? And who was going to pay for the lessons,
because anyone who had skied even once knows that you can’t do it without lessons?
Well, fast-forward to 2010, when Malliet a successful businessman, was finally
ready to do something to make it happen. To that end, he co-founded the National
Winter Sports Education Foundation whose mission is to encourage teens, especially
teens of color, to get over their fear for ski and go beyond their limitations. Malliet also
founded the National Winter-Activity Center in Vernonm New Jersey, one of the
nation’s first non-profit outdoor winter environment dedicated to improving the lives of
youth through winter activity. Through its program the Center provides instruction,
healthy meals, equipment, and role model. Through partnerships with YMCAs, Boys &
Girls Clubs, Schools , and other youth-serving agencies, the Center served more than
1160 children this past year and expects that number to increase to 2200 in 2018.
“ I know that would not be where I am in life without the guidance i received from
those who protected or sheltered me from things that could have gotten in my way
growing up. I’ve invested all my heart in the Center. To be able to run a business and be
in the industry I have passion for, while also giving back and actually seeing the
excitement and changes in the kids, makes this experience truly mean the world to me.”

A. To encourage teens to enjoy outdoor games.
B. To overcome teens’ fears and limitations.
C. To earn money by holding sports events.
D. To provide teens with food and clothing.

A. To analyze the reason why teens are afraid of skiing.
B. To emphasize what people should do to change the teens attitude.
C. To introduce how Malliet helped teens gain access to winter sport.

The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard
is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart
phones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的)skill. However,
while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many
believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful---both in
school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of
Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children
acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of
students to complete various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand. The study,
published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote
longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s
writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write.
“Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our
vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect
with ideas.” Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to
transcribe(转换) “those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and
screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to
turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they
write the words down and to correct them over time.
“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling
because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling
ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct
spelling among the options given by the computer.”
61. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?
A. The absence of blackboard in classroom.
B. The use of new technologies in teaching.
C. The lack of practice in handwriting.
D. The popular use of smart phones.
62. Berninger’s study published in 2009 ___________.
A. focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer.
B. indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper.
C. found that good essays are made up of long sentences.
D. discussed the importance of writing speed.
63. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?
A. Spelling improves one’s memory of words.
B. Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability.
C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.
D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.
64. What does “mind’s eye” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Window. B. Soul. C. Picture. D. Imagination.
65. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?
A. Computers can help people with their choice of words.
B. Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching.
C. Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms.
D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade.
D
As we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so
many great books that we’ve yet to get around to. Yet re-readers are everywhere around
us. For certain fans, re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice
annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen’s Emma can still surprise him, despite his
having read it over 50 times.
New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading.
Journalist Rebecca Mead, a long-time Englishwoman in New York, first came across
George Eliot’s Middlemarch at 17. Since then, she has read it again every five years.
With each re-reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has
resonated (引起共鸣) differently. Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which
really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each
time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.
Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading. Research
conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with
the “what” and the “why”. Second time round, we’re able to better appreciate the
emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher Cristel Russell of the
American University explained, returning to a book “brings new or renewed
appreciation of both the great book and its readers.”
It’s true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we’re fond
of making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a time and place, and
remind us of the kind of person that we were then. We’re changed not only by lived
experience but also by read experience– by the books that we’ve discovered since last
reading the one in our hand.
More so than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our
imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that
unfaithfulness in life. A book is a joint project between writers and readers, and we
must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become
connected with the story in the book.
Perhaps what’s really strange is that we don’t re-read more often. After all, we
watch our favourite films again and we wouldn’t think of listening to an album only
once. We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is
a largely one-time delight. A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead
confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.
66. The two books are mentioned in Paragraph 1 mainly to ________.
A. attract the attention of readers
B. introduce the topic of the passage
C. provide some background information
D. show the similarity between re-readers
67. The underlined expression “crack their spines” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A. recite them B. re-read them C. recall them D. retell them
68. It can be learned from paragraphs 3 and 4 that ________.
A. reading benefits people both mentally and physically
B. readers mainly focus on feelings on their first reading
C. we know ourselves better through re-reading experience
D. we will change writers by reading the books
69. The writer indicates in paragraph 5 that _____.
A. reading is an interaction between writers and readers
B. writers inspire less imaginations than film directors do
C. writers describe the story by using pictures
D. reading calls for readers’ little attention
70. The writing purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. call on different understandings of re-reading old books
B. argue against the mental health benefits of re-reading
C. bring awareness to the significance of re-reading
D. introduce the effective ways of re-reading old books
第 III 卷 非选择题(本卷共 6 小题,满分 35 分)
第一节: 阅读表达 (共 5 小题;每题 2 分, 满分 10 分)
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。
Six days a week, up and down the red hills of northeast Georgia, my grandfather
brought the mail to the folks there. At age 68, he retired from the post office, but he
never stopped serving the community.
On his 80th birthday, I sent him a letter, noting the things we all should be
thankful for—good health, good friends and good outcomes. By most measurements
he was a happy man. Then I suggested it was time for him to slow down. At long last,
in a comfortable home, with a generous pension, he should learn to take things easy.
“Thank you for your nice words,” he wrote in his letter back, “and I know what
you meant, but slowing down scares me. Life isn’t having it made; it’s getting it
made.”
“The finest and happiest years of our lives were not when all the debts were paid,
and all difficult experiences had passed, and we had settled into a comfortable home.
No. I go back years ago, when we lived in a three-room house, when we got up before
daylight and worked till after dark to make ends meet. I rarely had more than four
hours of sleep. But what I still can’t figure out is why I never got tired, never felt
better in my life. I guess the answer is, we were fighting for survival, protecting and
providing for those we loved. What matters are not the great moments, but the partial
victories, the waiting, and even the defeats. It’s the journey, not the arrival, that
counts.”
The letter ended with a personal request: “Boy, on my next birthday, just tell me
to wake up and get going, because I will have one less year to do things—and there
are ten million things waiting to be done.”
Christina Rossetti, an English poet, once said: “Does the road wind uphill all the
way? Yes, to the very end.” Today, at 96, my grandfather is still on that long road,
climbing.
71. What was the author’s grandfather before he retired? (no more than 5 words)
72. What did the author advise his grandfather to do in his letter? (no more than 10
words)
73. What is the grandfather’s view on life according to his letter back? (no more
than 10 words)
74. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (no more
than 10 words)
75. Do you agree with the grandfather’s view on life? Give reasons in your own
words. (no more than 20 words)

第二节 书面表达(满分 25 分)
Dear Chris,
After reading your e-mail, I can see you are greatly confused with group learning.
It’s common for you to feel like this if you are not familiar with the topic or you
are not well prepared for the topic to be discussed. Besides, the ability to express
yourself in Chinese is another reason which prevents you from voicing your own
opinion freely.
In fact, group learning is a fantastic way to practice your spoken Chinese and
improve the ability to think in Chinese. In my opinion, what you are going to do is to be
well prepared for the topic. For example, you can collect information about the topic
and recite in advance. Additionally, use every chance to speak Chinese, in which way
you can improve your oral Chinese quickly. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. You
can’t speak fluent Chinese without opening your mouth.
Your experience reminds me of my process of studying English. Perseverance is
very important. Don’t lose hope. I’m here willing to help.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Jin

附:听力原文
(Text 1)
M: What kind of food do you like?
W: I like healthy food. I don't like fast food or fried food.
(Text 2)
M: Have you seen the author's latest bestseller?
W: I've just finished reading it. I really recommend it.
(Text 3)
M: Where's Lucy? She usually comes for coffee with you.
W: Not today. She's got a headache and she's feeling a bit sick.
(Text 4)
M: Did you get the role you tried out for in the play?
W: That role was given to someone else, but I got a better one.
(Text 5)
M: I thought I’d give Peter a call now.
W: I’m afraid it’s too late at night.
(Text 6)
M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe.
W: Yes. I'll leave in three weeks. But there are still a few things I need to do, like
buying my plane ticket and figuring out what to do with my rented apartment while I'm
away.
M: You are not going to give it up, are you?
W: Certainly not. I'll never find another apartment around here. But I don't like the idea
of paying three months' rent on an empty apartment, either.
M: Perhaps you could let it to someone else.
W: Yes, but to whom?
M: Let me see. Oh, I know just the person. An old friend of mine, Jim Thomas, is
coming here to do some research this summer, from June to August.
W: That's exactly when I'll be away. It sounds ideal.
M: Tell you what, I'll be calling Jim late this week anyway, and I'll mention it to him
then.
W: Well, thanks, Bill. Let me know what happens.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, what can I do for you?
W: I haven't received my grade report from last semester, and my friends all say they
got theirs already.
M: They were all posted at the same time. So, you say you haven't received yours yet?
W: No, I haven't.
M: Hmm? Did you have any problem last time you got your grades?
W: Well, actually, I'm a first-year student. This is the first set of grades. My email
address hasn't changed or anything, so...
M: Wait, are you talking about your personal email account?
W: Yeah. The school sends us our grades by email, right?
M: No, we just post them on the university website.
W: Are you kidding? I thought they were sent to us by email. OK, now I feel stupid.
M: Don't worry about it. Starting college can be pretty confusing; there are a lot of new
things you have to get used to.
(Text 8)
Ok, everybody. Can we start the meeting now? I'm Mike Johnson, chairman of the
Graduation Committee for this year. You've all been selected as representatives to plan
the graduation ceremonies. I am sending around a sheet of paper. Please write down
your names and telephone numbers on it. We have many different things to do for the
ceremonies. So, please also write down what part of the ceremonies you'd like to work
on. Remember, as a representative, you'll have a lot of responsibilities. So only sign up
if you feel you have the time to participate: When everyone has finished writing down
the information, please return the paper to me. It's Tuesday today. One week from
today, at our next meeting, we will start to discuss the details of the ceremonies. Is
everything clear?
