I Work and I Am Happy
As a student, I have few opportunities to work owing to my full schedule. But an activity organized by my
school left a deep impression on me. The activity is called Farm Work Program. During the Program, I had to
get up early and did assigned farm work with my classmates under the expert guidance of trainers. For example,
we helped water the plants and pick up vegetables. We were even taught how to make tofu. With the help of my
classmates, I finally made tofu successfully, which brought me great happiness. While working, I realized how
hard it was to work with my own hands and how happy it was to enjoy the fruit(s) of my labor.
From my perspective, we cannot always participate in such programs, but we can help our parents do some
housework. For example, we can help wash dishes after dinner, or we can wash our socks and so on. Remember
that few things can make us happier than seeing the results of our hard work.

试卷 A
Text 1
W: Welcome to Montana’s Steakhouse. How are you doing today?
M: I’m doing well, thank you. I’ll have the New York Steak with a side salad instead of a baked potato,
and a large Coke, please.
W: Coming right up, sir.
Text 2
W: Okay, I decided something. I want to be an actress. I just love to tell stories and make people happy.
M: You’re right about that. You have such a fun and lively attitude, and people listen to you. You’ll be a
great actress!
Text 3
M: Would you be unhappy if I left early tonight? I have a bad headache, and I have a job interview
tomorrow.
W: Oh, not at all. I’d be stressed out if I were you. Don’t worry about it.
M: Thanks. Enjoy your party.
Text 4
M: You look more beautiful in this white skirt than that yellow one.
W: Thank you. I like the white one better. But how much will you charge me?
M: It costs $100, but I’d like to take off 30%, and that’s it.
Text 5
W: Tom, what are you doing in your room? Playing computer games? Don’t you forget your promise?
M: Oh, no. This is not a real game. It only helps me remember new words.
Text 6
M: Do you watch a lot of TV?
W: No. In fact, we don’t have a TV in our apartment.
M: Really? What do you do at night without a TV?
W: You’d be amazed how much we get done. We read books, paint, listen to music, go for walks, have long meals,
and talk.
M: But it must be so boring without a TV!
W: I really prefer not having a TV around. It’s such a waste of time.
M: What do you do when your friends start talking about the shows they watched the night before?
W: We talk about different things, like what we read in the newspaper or what we did the night before.
M: I could never live without a TV!
W: You should try it!
Text 7
M: We did an interesting experiment in class today. Our teacher told us to cover our eyes and asked us
to figure out what certain foods were by how they tasted. Almost all of them were easy, though.
W: I remember doing that as a kid. So, how did everyone do?
M: Some students had some trouble, but I got them all right. The first one was really sour, and I knew
what it was immediately.
W: Let me guess…it was a lemon, wasn’t it? That’s what I think of when I think of sour.
M: Yeah.
W: So, what was the sweet food? Cake? 南开区 19-20 第二学期高三英语模拟 参考答案

M: No, it was honey actually. Then we were given dark chocolate, which was bitter. Finally, we were
given a salty piece of bread. Did you know the tip of your tongue is best for tasting salty things?
W: Really? I guess I never really thought about that.
M: Yeah. And the very back of your tongue tastes the bitter things, and the sides allow you to taste the
sour stuff. Cool, right?
W: Fascinating. You learn something new every day.

W: Turn it to Channel 5. It’s time to watch The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He always interviews all the most
famous actors and musicians. He’s so funny.
M: All right. But when we’re finished, you have to let me watch my favorite game show.
Text 2
W: Are you sure you should wear those shorts to the golf course? They have pretty strict rules about clothes. Maybe
you should put on some nice pants.
M: It’s okay. I checked online. I have a shirt with a collar. I’m just not allowed to wear jeans.
Text 3
W: Jerry, I need to talk to you. Your father and I have decided to move to San Francisco. He’s gotten a new job there.
We just told your sister, and she’s pretty excited.
M: Well, I’m not very excited to say goodbye to all my good friends…
Text 4
M: You remember that painting I sold for $1,000? I found it from an art collector. It’s actually worth $10,000.
W: That museum got a good deal. You’re my best friend, but I have to tell you: you’re not a very good salesman!
Text 5
M: You really see all sorts of things on the streets of Paris. In fact, you can even have a drawing of yourself right here
on the street. The art students do it to practice their skills.
W: Did you have your portrait done here?
Text 6
W: We need to have a family night this week. We’ve all been so busy lately with work, school and
outside activities. It’s been a long time since our family stayed together last time. I am planning a family
night for Friday night.
M: Yes. Okay, honey. I think that’s a great idea! I’ll tell the kids they can’t hang out with their friends
that night and they have to be home. But what should we do together?
W: Hmm… Well, we should definitely order some food. We’ll let the kids pick what they want. And 南开区 19-20 第二学期高三英语模拟 参考答案

maybe we could take them out for ice cream after we eat. We could also pick a movie to watch together
— if we can all agree on one! We all have such different likes and opinions.
M: Okay. We could also play some games. The kids used to love family game night when they were
little. I know they’re older now, but it still might be fun.
W: Maybe. We can try it, anyway! Whatever we do, it’ll be nice just to talk and be together. They’ll be
all grown up and leaving the house in a few years. I want to take advantage of this time when they’re
still close to us.
M: I agree. I’ll go tell them now. This will be fun!
Text 7
W: Tom, we are going on a fishing trip next week for six days. Do you think you could keep an eye on the house and
feed the dog while we’re gone?
M: Of course, Lisa! I owe you one for that time last year when I went hunting.
W: It was a pleasure! I love your puppy. She gets along with Sparky so well!
M: What are you all fishing for down there?
W: I’m not sure. But Jim really wants to catch a big fish. It has been a goal of his since his dad taught him how to fish
in the deep ocean when he was 13.
M: I learned how to catch fish from watching a TV show called Bait and Rods. You should tell Jim to check it out
before you guys leave.
W: Sounds interesting. I’ll let him know.

Happy Laba Festival! The Laba Festival is celebrated on the 8th day of the last month of the old Chinese calendar.
This day is marked by eating a special porridge. At the oldest temple in Beijing, free Laba porridge is handed out.
Although the weather is very cold, crowds of people have come here to try it. The two most important traditions
associated with the Laba Festival are praying for personal well-being and eating Laba porridge. The Laba Festival
reminds people that Chinese New Year is just around the corner. The traditional recipe is a mix of 8 things like rice, red
beans, and nuts. It takes about 8 hours to make. But the porridge in the temple here has many more, including fruit,
seeds, and black beans. Porridge used to be handed out to the poor during other periods in Chinese history. Though
most people today are here for the experience, the act of sharing is still a powerful symbol of charity. In ancient China,
Chinese people offered gifts to their dead loved ones during the last month of the old calendar. This rich history is an
important reason the tradition has been preserved in modern-day China.
