If you want to learn why everything is usually cheaper, and what items are the best deals at your local or chain dollar or discount store, store employees have a lot of useful information. They tend to know what shoppers want — even before shoppers know themselves. Everyone buys unnecessary things Whether you shop at a chain dollar store such as Dollar Tree, Family Dollar or your local 99 cents store, not everything that’s on sale is necessarily worth purchasing. Bryan Waring, a former Dollar Tree employee, says that you’re not alone in buying more than necessary from these stores. “It seems basic, but everyone falls for this trap,” he says. “You go into a store where everything is cheap, and you walk out with things you don't need.” He suggests going into a store — yes, even the dollar store — with a checklist of things you truly need. Everything is cheaper after the holiday season Patricia, a seasonal worker at a Dollar Tree, says that the post-Christmas season means even more deals on everything from decorations to sweets. “After Christmas, all the gift wrap paper went to 50 cents, and all Christmas items were half price,” she says. “Even candy bars are 89 cents versus $ 1.” Products are less expensive because of their size In order for dollar stores to keep their prices low, product sizes are usually smaller than normal, according to Cheapism. Dollar stores area t the only ones guilty of this trick. Cheapism also reports Walmart is guilty of doing the same thing to attract customers. 1.What is Bryan’s advice against buying unnecessary things?A.Making a purchase alone. B.Writing a to-buy list ahead. C.Shopping at your local store. D.Buying basic things separately. 2.Which of the following is a better time for shopping according to Patricia? A.In the Christmas sales. B.At a particular discount. C.After the Christmas season. D.During some holiday seasons. 3.How do stores make their products cheaper? A.By reducing product sizes. B.By lowering product costs. C.By adopting discount strategies. D.By attracting more customers. He suggests going into a store — yes, even the dollar store — with a checklist of things you truly need. 根据第三段中“After Christmas, all the gift wrap paper went to 50 cents, and all Christmas items were half price,” she says. In order for dollar stores to keep their prices low, product sizes are usually smaller than normal, according to Cheapism. A。 B The market investigation is indispensable to sales promotion. They are closely related as the lips and teeth, so to speak. What you produce is for sale on the market. It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market. In the international market, goods on sale are coming from different countries and suppliers are always facing keen competition. Under such circumstances, they will try everything possible to familiarize themselves with the market conditions. In making investigations, we ought to get information about what similar items the competitors are offering on the market, what prices they are quoting (报价) , what features their products have, who are their regular customers, etc. Then, how can we obtain such information? There are many channels that we can, make use of in doing this sort of work. The commercial counselor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad can help us in making market investigations. Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then. One of their purposes is to make market surveys on the spot. Certainly, face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen are also important channels to get market information. The Chinese Export Commodities Fairs, and some other fairs of similar nature as well as visits of foreign businessmen provide us with such opportunities. Of course, there are some other ways of making market investigations. 4.In making market investigations, one should _________ . A.get enough information concerned B.advertise his products C.produce high quality goods D.visit the competitors 5.The underlined word “indispensable” in the first line means _________ . A.successful B.necessaryC.advisable D.available 6.Which of the following is NOT the reason why making market investigations is important? A.Every producer is faced with fierce competition. B.The market investigation plays a big role in promoting sales. C.Goods on sale are numerous because of globalization. D.The investigation offers many job opportunities. 7.All the following are channels to get market information except _________ . A.to contact the commercial counselor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad B.to improve the quality of the products and achieve high production efficiency C.to send trade groups abroad every now and then D.to have face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen 【解析】 这是一篇说明文。 由第二段中的“In making investigations, we ought to get information about what similar items the competitors are offering on the market, what prices they are quoting (报价) , what features their products have, who are their regular customers, etc.” 故选 A 项。 5. 由第一段的“The market investigation is indispensable to sales promotion. They are closely related as the lips and teeth, so to speak.”(市场调查对销售是必不可少的,可以说,它们就像嘴唇和牙齿一样是密 切相关的)可知,市场调查和销售密切相关,所以此处的 indispensable 在句中意为“必要的”,说明市场调查 对销售很必要。故选 B 项。6. 由第二段中的“In the international market, goods on sale are coming from different countries and suppliers are always facing keen competition.”(在国际市场上,在售商品来自不同的国家,供应商也面临着激 烈的竞争)可知,因为全球化,在售商品很多,而且每个生产者都面对激烈的竞争,排除 AC 两项;由第一 段中的“It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market.”(如果不首 先调查市场,就不可能成功地销售产品)可知,调查市场对销售产品很重要,排除 B 项;D 项“市场调查提 供很多工作机会”,文中未提,无中生有。故选 D 项。 7. 由倒数第二段中的“The commercial counselor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad can help us in making market investigations. Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then.”(驻外使馆商务参赞处可以帮助我们进行市场调查;现在,我们的进出口公司时 不时地把他们的贸易集团派往国外。)可知,通过联系驻外使馆商务参赞处和时不时地派贸易集团出国是获 取市场信息的途径,排除 AC 两项;由最后一段中的“Certainly, face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen are also important channels to get market information.”(当然,与外商面对面洽谈也是获取市场信息的重要渠道。) C Empathy (同理心)is one of those strange qualities—something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them. What Is Empathy?— Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two distinct values. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone's feelings; criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, dignity, and understanding. Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy—While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them. It begins with the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.Meet Emotional Needs—When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug cannot fill a cup. It's a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to handle emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a response is required. 8.Why is it that the next generation are taught to have empathy? A.Because people tend to center themselves. B.Because everyone lacks empathy. C.Because empathy is a strange quality. D.Because it's better to give than to receive. 9.Which situation can empathy be used in? A.When a mathematician is calculating the area of a farmland. B.When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams. C.When a criminal is cheating a victim. D.When a dancer is dancing to music. 10.What does the underlined sentence "An empty jug cannot fill a cup" mean? A.An empty jug is too small to hold a cup. B.It's a must to talk to kids about emotions. C.Adults should set an example to kids. D.Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first. 11.What is the main topic of the passage?A.How to train kids to have empathy. B.How to distinguish sympathy and empathy. C.How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks. D.Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic. In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.(在一个强调自我满足的世界里,它供不应求。 故选 A。 9. While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them.(虽然有些孩子天生就有一颗善良的心,但在大多数情况 下,孩子们需要看到他们周围成年人的同情心)可知,B 选项“当老师安慰学生考试不及格时”符合同理心使 用的情况。故选 B。 10. Meet Emotional Needs—When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the need arises but first they need to receive.(满足 情感需求——当孩子们的情感需求得到满足时,会发生两件事。 This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.( 因此,我们更有理由教导下一代,对周围的人抱有同理心意味着 什么)以及文章主要内容为如何教导孩子拥有同理心客栈,故 A 选项“如何培养孩子的同理心”符合文章主题。故选 A。 D For two centuries, the famous University of Cambridge debating society has hosted many prominent figures, from world leaders to scientists to comedians. On Nov 21, the Cambridge Union hosted its first-ever non-human guest. Designed by IBM, Project Debater is a machine that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to form a spoken argument. It can even listen and answer to opposing statements, much like a real person. Speaking with a voice similar to Siri, Project Debater uses AI to search journals, newspapers and other information sources. It then filters out(过滤) useless information, picks the strongest arguments, and arranges them into a persuasive argument. “In the Cambridge test debate, it argued the topic: AI will ultimately do more harm than good. According to IBM, it is the first machine that can debate complicated topics with humans. Before the debate, more than 1,100 arguments for the positives and negatives of AI were submitted to the IBM website. The machine then analyzed these sources and formed the basis of its arguments in minutes. Project Debater then showed off its AI by arguing for both sides of the debate. Over a four-minute speech, it argued first that, “AI can only make decisions that it has been programmed to solve, while humans can be programmed for all plots, possible events.” In support of AI, it then argued that AI would create new jobs and “bring a lot more efficiency” to the workplace. This isn’t the first test for Project Debater. In June 2018, the machine went back-and-forth for 20 minutes against champion debater Harish Natarajan. According to New Scientist, on both occasions, Project Debater repeated points and didn’t always sufficiently support them. Speaking to Cambridge Independent, Noam Slonim, the project’s lead engineer, said, “The AI is not perfect, but it’s going in the right direction.” The team hopes to improve the AI by researching why humans find certain arguments more persuasive than others. 12.In which way does Project Debater behave like a real person? A.It can listen and answer to opposing statements. B.It can speak with a voice similar to Siri. C.It can create various useful sources. D.It can deal with any situation. 13.What were prepared for the machine before the Cambridge test debate? A.Analyzed sources. B.Useless messages. C.Materials for arguments. D.Items about human debaters. 14.We can infer from the text that _________. A.AI did better than humans in arguments B.the machine had rich ideas to support its points C.the machine beat Harish Natarajan in the first test D.AI needs more persuasive arguments in debates 15.What is Noam Slonim’s attitude to the AI ? A.Supportive. B.Unconfident. C.Negative. D.Indifferent. 【解析】这是一篇说明文。两个世纪以来,著名的剑桥大学辩论协会接待了许多杰出人物, 11 月 21 日,剑桥联合 会迎来了有史以来第一位非人类嘉宾——Project Debater。据 IBM 称,这是第一台可以与人类辩论复杂话题 的机器。文章还说明了它在此处辩论中的表现,以及人们对此的看法。 12.细节理解题。根据第二段中 It can even listen and answer to opposing statements, much like a real person. 可知它甚至可以倾听和回答相反的陈述,很像一个真人。由此可知,Project Debater 可以倾听和回答相反的 陈述,因此表现得像一个真实的人。故选 A。 13.细节理解题。根据第五段中 Before the debate, more than 1,100 arguments for the positives and negatives of AI were submitted to the IBM website.可知在这场辩论之前,超过 1100 个关于人工智能利弊的论点被提交到 IBM 的网站上。由此可知,在剑桥测试辩论之前,人们为这台机器准备了辩论材料。故选 C。 14.推理判断题。根据最后一句 The team hopes to improve the AI by researching why humans find certain arguments more persuasive than others.可知研究小组希望通过研究为什么人类发现某些论据比其他论据更 有说服力,来提高人工智能。由此可推知,人工智能在辩论中需要更有说服力的论据。故选 D。 15.推理判断题。根据最后一段中Speaking to Cambridge Independent, Noam Slonim, the project’s lead engineer, said, “The AI is not perfect, but it’s going in the right direction.”可知该项目的首席工程师 Noam Slonim 在接受 《剑桥独立报》采访时表示:“人工智能并不完美,但它正朝着正确的方向前进。”由此可推知,Noam Slonim 对于人工智能的态度是支持的。故选 A。 第 II 卷(非选择题) 第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 Choosing a major is a very important thing in our life.
