She first noticed signs of her dad’s developing dementia(痴呆) when she moved to Nottingham. She said, "Dad was a doctor, so he knew exactly what had happened to him, but people try to hide it when they are ill. Then, I came home for my 21st birthday and arranged to meet him, but he never showed up as he’d forgotten. That’s when I knew something serious had happened." So, aged 21, she decided to leave university and look after him herself. She lived close by, popping in every day to make sure he was eating, and that the house was tidy, before heading off to her work. Besides challenging moments, there was a time when looking after her dad was a pure joy. "We’d wake up, I’d ask what he wanted to do that day, and however ridiculous the adventure is, off we’d go." Sadly, in 2009, 5 years later, Laura lost her father. Before he died, Laura went to a hospital appointment with him, where doctors mentioned that his form of Alzheimer’s disease was genetic meaning there was a fifty-fifty chance that she had inherited it. For several years Laura agonised over whether to be tested, finally finding out in August 2017 that she has the APP gene, meaning that, like him, she will develop the condition within a decade.4 At first, she struggled, feeling as if her life lacked purpose. Then, during a sleepless night in the summer of 2018, she decided at around 2 a.m. to enter the 2019 London Marathon sponsored by the charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK. She hoped to start the conversation around early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to encourage people to talk about it more openly. "I remember when Dad was ill, people wouldn’t know how to react, but I want to be honest and open," she added. "The more information we can get, the less of a taboo(忌讳) we will feel. That said, the support I’ve received so far after going public has been amazing — that’s what is carrying me through." 4.Laura noticed her father’s dementia when . A.her father told her his condition in person B.people nearby informed her of his father’s condition C.her father forgot his own birthday party D.her father forgot to attend her 21-year-old birthday party 5.The underlined word "agonised" in Paragraph 4 probably means . A.excited B.struggled C.shocked D.delighted 6.Laura started the open talk in the hope of . A.getting people to talk about Alzheimer’s disease openly B.earning some money to help treat her Alzheimer’s disease C.making herself stronger to fight against Alzheimer’s disease D.raising funds for charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s disease Research UK 7.Which words can best describe Laura? A.Caring and positive. B.Careful and honest.5 C.Patient and cautious. D.Devoted and modest. 根据文章第一段最后两句“Then, I came home for my 21st birthday…That’s when I knew something serious had happened”可知,Laura 的父亲忘记参加女儿的 21 岁生日会,在那时 Laura 意识到父亲 已患病。故选 D。 5. 根据上文中的“there was a fifty-fifty chance that she had inherited it”可知,医生告知 Laura, 她有百分之五十患病的概率,并结合画线词所在句中的“whether to be tested”可推知,此处表示 Laura 几年 来苦苦思索是否去检查一下,与 B 项词义接近。故选 B。 6. 根据该段首句“She hoped to start the conversation around early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to encourage people to talk about it more openly”可知, 作者公开谈论阿尔茨海默病是为了鼓励人们公开谈论此病,故答案是 A。 7. A。 C In recent years, people have been focusing on the quality of food that children are fed in schools. Former First Lady Michelle Obama worked hard to make school lunches healthier, resulting in new menus that featured less fat and salt, more fruits, vegetables, and leaner proteins. But high-quality nutrients count for little when there is no time to eat them and lack of lunch time is a serious problem in schools across the United States. Amy Ettinger reports, “There is no national standard on how much time kids get to eat that meal.” And with schools being occupied with test scores, teachers are using every available minute for lesson time, which often leaves kids without enough eating time. This is a problem because the length of the school lunch period is a key factor in how much nutrition children actually get. A research has found that having less than 20 minutes for lunch results in children consuming much 6 less of their lunches than those with more than 20 minutes. This is really terrible. For many low-income kids, that cafeteria lunch can represent half their daily energy intake. There’s also another terrible message that it’s acceptable to wolf down food as fast as possible before rushing off to your next class. Cafeteria time should be a chance to interact with friends, to learn important social skills, to observe and share varieties of food. It should be a respite in the day, a chance to relax mentally and physically before heading into the afternoon. As Ettinger explains, some parents are hoping the National Parent Teacher Association will address this issue at its next meeting and take an official stance. This, in turn, would help parents push their kids’ schools for better lunch time standards. Meanwhile, if you have a kid in this situation, you can help by packing a healthy lunch to spare them the cafeteria lineup. Make the foods easy to unwrap and eat, provide non-messy snacks that can be eaten in class, put significant effort into serving a hearty breakfast, and sit down as a family for dinner whenever possible. 8.What is happening to children in American schools? A.They lack lunch eating time. B.They get badly along with each other. C.They consume more meat than before. D.They are occupied with many outdoor activities. 9.How are low-income kids influenced by the problem at school? A.They can’t take in enough nutrients. B.They can’t share different kinds of food. C.They can’t learn some important social skills. D.They can’t hold a positive attitude towards life. 10.What does the underlined word “respite” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Test. B.Challenge.7 C.Belief. D.Break. 11.How can parents help solve the problem in the text? A.By guiding their kids how to eat lunches. B.By preparing a better lunch for their kids. C.By stopping their kids going to the cafeteria. D.By forcing the schools to make adjustments. But high-quality nutrients count for little when there is no time to eat them and lack of lunch time is a serious problem in schools across the United States. 故选 A。 9. A research has found that having less than 20 minutes for lunch results in children consuming much less of their lunches than those with more than 20 minutes. For many low-income kids, that cafeteria lunch can represent half their daily energy intake. 故选 A。 10. 划线词所在句中的 a chance to relax mentally and physically before heading into the afternoon (这是在下午上课前在身心上得到放松的机会)是 a respite in the day 的同位语。由此推知,a respite in the day 意为“一天中的休息时间”,故 respite 的意为“休息”。A. Test.测试;B. Challenge.挑战;C. Belief.信念;D. Break.休息。故选 D。 11. Meanwhile, if you have a kid in this situation, you can help by packing a healthy lunch to spare them the cafeteria lineup. B。 D A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong? Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the “out of sight, out of mind” principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight. The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point. Willpower may also be made less vulnerable(脆弱)to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all. 12.From the studies in the passage we learn that . A.people have unlimited self-control9 B.high motivation ensures one’s success C.willpower is hardly completely exhausted D.too many temptations often lead to failure 13.The underlined phrase “tap into” in Paragraph 3 most probably means . A.make use of B.run out of C.build D.increase 14.The author compares self –control to muscles . A.to prove the long-term effect of willpower B.to show the significance of regular exercise C.to argue that self-control can he easily used up D.to explain the benefits of practicing self-control 15.To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer? A.“I will give up dessert and do exercise.” B.“I will set three goals this new semester.” C.“I will read an English novel every month.” D.“I will keep myself from any temptation.” Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. 由第三段“The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down.” 所以通过上下文的语境,判断出“tap into”指利用, 与 make use of 同义。 While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all. 所以 C 项“I will read an English novel every month.” Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 16. Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies. Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system.17. Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children’s home was told by local villagers that there were “ghosts” in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been 11 living with a pack of wolves in the forest 18. In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala (the name given to the younger child): Kamal was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders.19. Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours, just like squirrels. Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior—by taking part in a cultural community.20. A.From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture. B.Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size. C.Human beings can only develop human abilities by the local people. D.This statement is well supported by some well-written cases. E. These children were the ghosts described by the local people. F. Culture refers only to the high art and classical music of a particular society. G. They learn a certain human language as well as certain kinds of human behavior through their membership in a certain cultural community. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 故 A 正确。 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human societ 18.E Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living a pack of wolves in the forest. Kamala was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders. Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior——by taking part in a cultural community. In January this year, a fire destroyed the building that housed Yossi Heiman's Fish Market in Borough Park, Brooklyn: The 21 made Yossi Heiman have no place to operate his business and no ability to get 22 The merchant Shea Langsam owns a(n) 23 store, just a few blocks away. A farmer sat down to relax before the fire for the evening. Then he heard a loud knock, something hitting against the window. He looked outside but could not see anything. So he went outside for a better view. In the field near his house he saw,of all the strangest things,a group of swans(天鹅).19 They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down south, but they had been caught in the snowstorm. The storm had become too blinding and violent for the swans to fly or see their way. They were trapped on his farm, with no food or shelter, unable to do more than wave their wings and fly in aimless circles. He had compassion for them and wanted to help them. He thought to himself, the barn(谷仓)would be a great place for them to stay. It was warm and safe;surely they could spend the night and wait out the storm. So he opened the barn doors for them. He waited, watching them, hoping they would notice the open barn and go inside. However, they did not notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them. He moved closer toward them to get their attention, but they just moved away from him out of fear. He went into the house and came back with some bread, broke it up,and made a bread trail to the barn. They still did not catch on. Starting to get frustrated,he went over and tried to drive them toward the barn. They panicked and scattered into every direction except toward the barn. Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn where there was warmth, safety, and shelter. Feeling totally frustrated,he exclaimed,“Why don’t they follow me?Can’t they see this is the only place where they can survive the storm? How can I possibly get them into the one place to save them?” Para 1 He thought for a moment and realized that they just would not follow a human.___________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ Para 2 Just then, a good idea occurred to his mind. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Para 1 He thought for a moment and realized that they just would not follow a human. He said to himself, How can I possibly save them? The only way would be for me become like those swans. If only I could become one of them. Then I could save them. They would follow me and I would lead them to safety.” He realized that was clear that these swans were afraid of human beings and every time he got close to them they would fly away. He thought he 20 should come up with a good idea. Para 2 Just then, a good idea occurred to his mind. He thought of his geese he raised on his farm. After all, they were relatives. Maybe they were much easier to get along with. He rushed to his geese and drove them to the front of the barn. Then he went back to his house, observing through the window. The cold soon drove his geese into the barn, followed by the swans. His method worked! The swans were safe now!
