My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over
a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of
clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model, I realized
this a day late, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less
than I had paid, The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on
until stations signed off for the night, Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night
movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For
some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a
few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to
change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work,
and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my
arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise ,I would sit helplessly and wait
for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working
altogether .My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep
expecting more trouble.

D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.
22. Which of the following can best replace the phrase ”signed off” in Paragraph 1?
A. ended all their programs B. provided fewer channels
C. changed to commercials D. showed all-night movies
23. How did the author finally get his TV set working again?
A. By shaking and hitting it. B. By turning it on and off.
C. By switching channels. D. By having it repaired.
24. How does the author sound when telling the story ?
A. Curious B. Anxious C. Cautious D. Humorous

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious.
Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that
honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in
trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for
honey have a strange and unexpected helper - a little bird called a honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂
房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds
a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts
the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through
the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the
nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey
as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the
ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined
in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They
will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even
enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.
25. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?
A. It's small in size. B. It's hidden in trees.
C. It's covered with wax. D. It's hard to recognize.
26. What do the words "the follower" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A bee. B. A bird.
C. A honey seeker. D. A beekeeper.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Wild Bees B. Wax and Honey
C. Beekeeping in Africa D. Honey-Lover's Helper

More student than ever before are taking a gap-year (间隔年)before going to university. It
used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon
originated(起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in
November and the start of the next academic year.
This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have
put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by
University and College Admissions Serbice (UCAS).
That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony
Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education.
“Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete,
their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he
said.
But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of
Students(NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student had ship – young people are
being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now
aware that they are likely to leave university up to £15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that
more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the
degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term
time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,” he said.
28. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?
A. It is flexible in length. B. It is a time for relaxation.
C. It is increasingly popular. D. It is required by universities.
29. According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year______.
A. arc better prepared for college studies
B. know a lot more about their future jobs
C. are more likely to leave university in debt
D. have a better chance to enter top universities
30. How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?
A. He's puzzled. B. He's worried. C. He's surprised. D. He's annoyed.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30
a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground
floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By
her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and
we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my
passengers the way I would want my mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an
address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have
any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove
through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood
where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone
dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit
staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address
she had given me.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
"Nothing." I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I
answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Before the woman
left , I said to her, “My mother treated everyone kindly, she is a great person, but she passed away
years ago. you are like my mother,” the woman said, “ thank you. If you want to visit me, I’ll tell

millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we
saw last night. But she neglected her family. her only son died one year ago because of cancer. She
sold everything to save him, but failed. How sad! At last, the old woman said to me, “Life is short,

that family is the most important thing to you,” I said nothing but nodded hard.
