My husband and I were taking care of Lizzy, our daughter Melanie’s pet dog, on April 17
while Melanie was in the early stage of labour at the hospital. We received a text from our
son-in-law, Joe Levanti, that Melanie was about to give birth. Tom and I sprang from our
chairs suddenly. It’s a tradition in our immediate family(直系家属) to wait at the hospital
for a birth. This would be Melanie and Joe’s first child.
“You take Lizzy out before we leave, and I’ll be waiting for you in the car!” I told Tom. I
started the car and waited impatiently. I saw my husband walk out of the front door, but then
out shot Lizzy and she was running down the street at great speed.
My husband ran after the dog, and I followed in my car. “Lizzy! Lizzy!” we shouted as
fear filled our heart. We chased her up and down our Bellwood Avenue. “She’s running onto
Wireless Road!” we both screamed with fear. Lizzy dashed back and forth in the busy street.
My husband kept up his chase on foot. I shouted to my husband, “Tom! Be careful when you
cross the street!”
Within minutes, traffic was actually stopped on Wireless Road. A half-dozen good people
got out of their cars to help. Soon, she ran into a safer area and then back to our street. With
the help of six strangers, we caught her within a few anxious minutes. Everyone cheered, and
we thanked the helpers again and again.
With Lizzy safely back inside, we drove straight to the hospital and were able to see our
daughter in the delivery room. My husband and I are forever grateful to the strangers who
might have saved Lizzy’s life and who enabled us to be there at the beginning of a precious
new one.

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and
doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older,
while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some
more myths:
I’ll never lose weight --- I come from a fat family.
Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes
for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason
is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little.
I am fat because I burn calories slowly.
Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism ( 新 陈 代 谢 ). If fact, although fat
people consume more energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat!
Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately.
Exercise is boring.
Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it many times. The key is to develop a
balanced and varied program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk,
take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a
distance or time challenge.
No pain, no gain.
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s
wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild
discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive
changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If you don’t, rest
and seek medical advice.
28.What does the author think about being fat?
A.It is the result of people’s unbalanced lifestyle.
B.It is the family genes that make people fat.
C.A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat.
D.People are fat because they consume too little energy.
29.According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting?
A.By choosing simple exercise. B.By taking varied exercise.
C.By doing regular exercise. D.By sticking to outdoor exercise.
30.What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising?
A.Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.
B.Pain in exercise is a precondition(前兆) for reaching your goal.
C.Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.
D.Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.
31.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To declare the importance of keeping fit.
B.To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.
C.To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.
D.To clarify some misunderstanding about fatness and exercise.
