There is such a group of singers in the western musical circle at present, who enter the
business as online celebrities and then become top idols and giant stars globally. They become
popular for their videos online and then they are discovered by talent agents and gradually
cause huge storms in the musical circle. For example, Troye Sivan, a singer who is nicknamed
“chuoye”, became popular on You tube from an early age.
As a popular video sharing website, You Tube has given rise to plenty of stars, creating a
new celebrity culture. Providing a platform where anyone can post videos, You tube presents
the opportunity for anyone to achieve fame by simply uploading a short video. Sivan has been
making you tube videos since he was 12 to show his singing talent. In the digital age, Sivan has
already developed large devoted audience online and his sensitive video blogs have earned him
extreme popularity.
A survey has showed that US teenagers are more attracted with You Tube stars, which is a
surprising result. You Tube stars are judged to be more attractive, outstanding and related
than traditional stars. Looking at the survey comments and feedback, teens enjoy a close and
real experience with You Tube celebrities, who aren't carefully directed by design. Teens also
say they appreciate YouTube stars sense of humor and risk-taking spirit, which are often
limited by Hollywood stars. As a result, singers who make their first show in the traditional
way no longer have a complete advantage in front of the audience. Online platforms open up a
lot of doors for people. They become the best place to be discovered.

Do you like drinking tea? You may be surprised, however, that the UK also has tea
traditions.
The UK has been in love with tea since the 17th century, when merchants first brought it to
the country. Its popularity has never declined. According to the Tea and Infusions
Organization, the average British person drinks more than 900 cups a year.
In demographic(人口特性的)terms, Britain is quite varied. There are significant differences
between people according to region, ethnicity (种族) and age. But a very basic difference –
social difference – is reflected in the ways that people drink tea.
When people think of the UK and tea, they generally have an image of the upper class in
their heads. They imagine finely dressed ladies and gentlemen, sitting down with tiny
sandwiches, drinking from delicate china cups, with their pinkie fingers raised.
This is known as “afternoon tea”. It surely happens, but it only involves a small minority
of the nation’s people. Most tea is drunk by the working population. These people enjoy tea at
their jobs, not while they are at their leisure.
Nor do they drink the same kind of tea as the ladies and gentlemen in the luxury hotels.
Manual (体力的)workers drink what is known as “builder’s tea”. The tea bag is left to
“ stew ( 焖 ) ” in the mug (not cup) for a long time. It will usually be heavily sweetened,
perhaps because sugar is a source of energy – and people at work always need energy.
There are many British tea traditions. “Afternoon tea” and “builder’s tea” are only
two ways that British people enjoy tea. No matter what kind of tea people drink, nor where
they drink it, all tea-drinking in the UK has a kind of ritual (仪式的) significance.Almost all British people would agree that tea is the first part of solving a problem. When
trouble arises, someone will invariably say, “Let’s put the kettle on.” Nothing looks bad
when you have a warm cup or mug of tea in your hands. As English actor Arthur Wing Pinero
put it, “Where there’s tea, there’s hope.”
61. What do we know about tea drinking in the UK?
A. Its history dates back to the 18th century.
B.Afternoon tea is gaining popularity in the country.
C. British people enjoy tea in different ways.
D. An average British person drinks a cup of tea every day.
62. What is builder’s tea?
A. It is a delicate tea for people at leisure.
B. It’s a type of tea commonly drunk by workers at their jobs.
C. It is made by workers and served in posh hotels.
D. It is a sweet tea drunk at dinner for energy.
63. Arthur Wing Pinero’s words are mentioned to _______.
A.show that drinking tea has special meaning to British people
B. show British tea has a long history
C. stress that drinking tea makes people work harder
D. express his great love for tea
64. What is the text mainly about?
A.British tea traditions among different social classes.
B. The difference between Chinese tea and British tea.
C. How tea drinking influences the lives of British people.
D. Tea drinking culture in the UK.

The notice was posted next to the guests’ mailboxes in the apartment building I’ d just
moved into in Brooklyn, New York. “A Milzvah for Mrs. Green,” it read. “Sign up to drive
Mrs. G in 3B home from her chemotherapy treatments twice a month.”Since I wasn ’t a driver, I couldn ’t add my name, but the word mitzvah stayed in my
thoughts after I went upstairs. It’s a Hebrew(希伯来语) word that means “to do a good
deed”.
And according to my grandmother, it also had another meaning. This was the one she was
always pointing out to me because she’d noticed how shy I was about letting people do things
for me. “Linda, it’s a blessing( 祝 福 , 好 事 ) to do a mitzvah for someone else, but
sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.”
Grandma would be shaking her head at me right now. Several of my friends had offered to
help me settle in after the moving men left, but I’d said I could manage. Letting them help
would have interfered with my image of myself as a capable and independent woman of 21.
Snowflakes(雪花) had been falling past my window for several hours when it came time
to leave for class. I put on two sweaters, a coat, a wool hat and boots, making for the bus stop.
In this December storm it was a hard journey. As I tied around my neck the blue scarf that
Grandma had knitted for me, I could almost hear her voice: “Why don’t you see if you can
find a lift(搭便车)?”
A thousand reasons came into my mind: I don’ t know my neighbors; I don’ t like to
disturb others; I feel funny asking for favors(帮忙). Pride would not let me knock on a door
and say, “It’s a 10-minute ride by car but a long wait for the bus, and it’s a 30-minute bus
ride, so could you possibly give me a lift to school?”
I labored to the bus stop, reaching it just as a bus went by.
Three weeks later, on the night of my final exam, the snow was falling steadily. I made my
way to the bus stop, I stretched my neck, praying desperately that a bus would come. Then I
gave up. The wind at my back pushed me toward home, and I prayed, “Dear God, how can I
get to school? What should I do?”
As I pulled Grandma’s scarf more tightly around my neck, again I seemed to hear that
whisper: Ask someone for a lift! It could be a mitzvah.
That idea had never really made sense to me. And even if I wanted to ask someone for a
good deed, which I did not, there wasn’t a person on the street.
But as I pushed the door of my apartment building open, I found myself face to face with a
woman at the mailbox. She was wearing a brown coat and had a set of keys in her hand. Obviously she had a car, just as obviously, she was going out. In that split second, desperation
overcame pride, I blurted, “Could you possibly give me a lift?” I hurriedly explained, “I
never ask anybody for a lift, but...”
An odd (奇怪的) look crossed the woman’s face, and I added, “Oh! I live in 4R. I
moved in recently.”
“I know,” she said. “I’ve seen you through the window.” Then, without hesitation,
“Of course, I’ll give you a lift. Let me get my car key.”
“Your car key?” I repeated. “Isn’t that it in your hand?”
She looked down. “No, no, I was just going to get my mail. I’ll be right back.” And she
disappeared upstairs, ignoring my “Ma’am! Please! I don’t mean to put you out!” I was
terribly embarrassed.
But when she came back, she spoke so warmly that I stopped feeling uncomfortable. “You
know the way better than I,” she said. “Why don’t you drive?”
“I can’t,” I said. Now I felt uneasy again.
She just laughed and patted me on the hand, saying, “It’s not so important,” and then I
laughed, too.
“You remind me of my grandmother,” I said.
At that, a slight smile crossed her lips. “Just call me Grandma Alice. My grandchildren do.”
When she dropped me off, I thanked her again and again and stood there waving as she
drove away. My final exam was a piece of cake compared with the difficult experience I’d
gone through to get to it, and asking Grandma Alice for help had relaxed me so that after class
I was able to ask easily, “Is anyone going my way?” It turned out that while I’d been
waiting for a bus every night, three fellow students passed my apartment house. “Why didn’
t you say something before?” they chorused.
Back home as I walked up the stairs, I passed Grandma Alice leaving her neighbor ’ s
apartment. “Good night, Mrs. Green. See you tomorrow,” the neighbor was saying.
Mrs. Green, the woman with cancer “Grandma Alice” was Mrs. Green.
I stood on the stairs, my hand covering my mouth: I asked a person struggling with cancer
to go out in a snowstorm to give me a lift to school. “Oh, Mrs. Green,” I stammered, “I
didn’t realize who you were. Please forgive me.”I forced my legs to move me up the stairs. In my apartment, I stood still, not taking my coat
off. How could I have been so insensitive? In a few seconds, someone tapped on my door. Mrs.
Green stood there.
“May I tell you something?” she asked. I nodded slowly. “I used to be so strong,” she
said. She was crying. “I used to be able to do things for other people. Now everybody keeps
doing things for me, giving me things, cooking my meals and taking me to places where I want
to go. It’s not that I don’t appreciate it, but I don’t have chances. Tonight before I went out
to get my mail, I prayed to God to let me feel like part of the human race again. Then you
came along...”

第四部分 任务型阅读 (共 10 小题;每小题 l 分,满分 l0 分)
You Should Read Every Day, Why?
I ask you a question. When was the last time you read a book, or a magazine article? Do
your everyday reading habits centre around updates on the Internet? In case you are one of
innumerable individuals who don’t make a habit of reading consistently you may be passing
up a great opportunity: Reading has a noteworthy number of advantages and only a couple of
advantages of reading are recorded below.
Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information and you never know when
it might be useful to you. The more knowledge you have, the better prepared you are to
overcome any challenge you’ll ever face. Additionally, here’s a bit of food for thought: Should
you ever find yourself in terrible circumstances, remember that although you might lose
everything else—your job, your possessions, your money, even your health—knowledge can
never be taken from you.
At the same time, the more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and they’ll
surely make their way into your everyday vocabulary. Being able to express your ideas clearly
in words is of great help in any profession and knowing that you can speak to higher-ranking
people with self-confidence can be a great encouragement to your self-esteem. It could even aid
in your career as those who are well-read, well-spoken, and knowledgeable on a variety of
topics tend to get promotions more quickly (and more often) than those with smaller
vocabularies and lack of awareness of literature, scientific breakthroughs, and global events.
Reading books is also vital for learning new languages, as non-native speakers gain exposure to
words used in context, which will improve their own speaking and writing fluency.
When you read a book, you have to remember a lot of characters, their backgrounds,
ambitions, history, as well as the various plots that weave their way through every story.
That’s a fair bit to remember, but brains are wonderful things and can remember these things easily. Amazingly enough, whenever you remember something new, new synapses are formed
and existing ones are strengthened. How cool that is!
No matter how much stress you have at work, in your personal relationships, or countless
other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when you lose yourself in a great story. A
well-written novel can transport you to other fields while an interesting article will distract you
and keep you in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and allowing you to relax.
Some of Benefits of Reading: You Should Read Every Day, Why?

第五部分: 书面表达(满分 25 分)
请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇 150 词左右的文章。
Again, my doorbell rings happily at 11 a.m. On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady; she
is small and slight, and she’s holding the hand of a little boy. In her other hand, she holds a
paper carrier bag. I know this lady. It is by no means her first visit. She is the little boy’s grandmother, and
her daughter bought the house next door last October. My visitor ’s daughter, Nicole (who
speaks fluent English), is currently in Shanghai, but her parents are in Vancouver for the
summer with the little boy. Nicole has told her mother that I am having heart surgery shortly,
and the result is that her mother has decided I need to be supplied with meals.
I know what is inside the paper carrier bag—a thermos with hot soup and a
stainless-steel(不锈钢) container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or
shrimp, sometimes with a kind of pancake. This has become an almost daily occurrence.
She doesn ’ t speak English and all I can say in Mandarin is hello. So here we are, two
grandmothers a world away from where we were raised, neither of us able to speak the other’s
language but communicating one way or another (with some help from technology). The
doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar brown paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to
me by her.
I’m working on some more Mandarin words. “Thank you” is, of course, the first
one. Somehow, it seems inadequate.

It becomes a daily routine that the author has been looked after by an old Chinese lady who
provides her with meals during her illness. Although she doesn’t speak English, her kindness needs
no translation.
After reading the story, I am deeply moved. As an old saying goes, “a good neighbor is better
than a distant relative”. When we study abroad, a neighbor may be of great help to us, especially in
emergency. Actually, it is the love among peopl that is powerful enough to break barriers, making
people live in harmony regardless of their skin colors and languages.
If I go abroad for further study, the following approaches will be adopted to solve the problem
of how to communicate with neighbors. First of all, I will make efforts to learn their native language
and establish sincere communication with them. What’s more, learning about their cultures and
taboos can better promote our understanding of one another.
