When Brody, a 4-year-old Connecticut boy, was asked what wish he wanted to come true, his
only dream was that he could be able to play outside.
Brody was born premature ( 早 产 ) at 27 weeks, which caused him to overheat and burn easily.
That means he can't spend any time outside and he'll get burn blisters (水疱) on his face even when
he is driven to the hospital. Besides, there are a lot of things he can't do. He has trouble walking and
only began talking one year ago. Brody can't eat or drink and has to wear a backpack 24/7 that
contains a pump that feeds him. “I can't even count the number of surgeries he's had since he was
born,” Brody's mother said. “He's spent probably half his life at the hospital.”
When Make-A-Wish Connecticut, an organization that creates life-changing wishes for children
with critical illnesses, heard about Brody's request to play outside, they immediately jumped into
action. “It's the most simple, most sweet wish, just to play outside but it seems to be the most
difficult to realize.” said Debbie Artinian, the manager of Make-A-Wish Connecticut.
Artinian and her team determined that a temperature-controlled tent outside Brody's home
where he could play and not be in the sun would be the best option. But they had to find a tent that
could stand weather conditions like wind and snow and had the right material to block all UV rays.
Luckily, Artinian found a company based in the United Kingdom that could design and make the4
tent. Make-A-Wish Connecticut learnt that Brody loves the beach, even though he is not able to go
into water because of his backpack. So they filled the tent with water toys and a kids’ pool filled
with balls to make Brody feel as much as possible like he's out at the beach.
Brody got his first look at the tent earlier this summer. “When he walked out of the door and I
saw his face, it was just everything,” said Artinian. “Now when Brody says ‘Can I go out and play?’,
his mom can say‘Yes.’ Brody is now enjoying spending nearly all his time "outside” in the tent.”
It's hard to make life completely normal for Brody, but Artinian and her team tried to make it as
normal as they could.
24. What can we learn about Brody?

On December 16 in 1773, a group of Massachusetts colonists made themselves look like
Mohawk Indians and boarded three British tea ships in Boston Harbor. They threw 342 chests of tea
into the water.
Now known as the “Boston Tea Party”, the midnight incident was to say “no” to the Tea Act of
1773, a bill made by the British government to save the troubled British East India Company by
greatly lowering its tea tax and giving it a virtual monopoly (垄断) on the American tea trade. The
low tax allowed the company to sell its tea even more cheaply than that secretly shipped into
America by Dutch traders. Many colonists viewed the act as yet another example of Britain's
taxation tyranny (专制).
In most American ports, the groups known as the Sons of Liberty were formed. They scared
off British tea•carrying ships by threatening their captains with tarring (焦油), or worse. However,
when three tea ships, the Dartmouth, the Eleanor and the Beaver, arrived in Boston Harbor and the
colonists demanded that the tea be returned to England, Thomas Hutchinson, the British•appointed
governor of Massachusetts, refused to permit the ships to leave. Patriot leader Samuel Adams
organized the now-famous “tea party” with about 60 members of the Sons of Liberty. The British
tea thrown into Boston Harbor on the night of December 16 was worth more than 700,000 dollars in
today's money.
The British government, outraged by the event, made the Coercive Acts, called the “Intolerable
Acts” by the colonists, in 1774.The Coercive Acts closed Boston to merchant shipping, established
formal British military rule in Massachusetts, protected British officials from criminal prosecution
( 起 诉 ) in America, and required colonists to quarter British troops. The colonists called the first5
Continental Congress to consider a united American fight against the British. The first Continental
Congress agreed.
On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress officially adopted the United States
Declaration of Independence. Then the war between Britain and America began. In October 1781,
the last major battle of the Revolution ended. In 1783, the United States formally became a free and
independent nation.

Large ecosystems, such as the Amazon rainforest, will collapse and disappear alarmingly
quickly, once a crucial tipping point is reached, according to calculations based on real-world data.
Writing in Nature Communications, researchers from Bangor University, Southampton
University and the University of London, reveal the speed at which ecosystems of different sizes
will disappear, once they have reached a point beyond which they collapse — transforming into an
alternative ecosystem. For example, once the “point of no return” is reached, the Amazon rainforest
could shift to a savannah-type (稀树草原型) ecosystem with a mix of trees and grass within 50 years,
according to the research. Some scientists argue that many ecosystems are currently teetering (摇晃)
on the edge of a cliff, with the fires and destruction of both the Amazon and Australian rainforests.
“Unfortunately, what our paper reveals is that humanity needs to prepare for changes far
sooner than expected,” says joint lead author Dr Simon Willcock of Bangor University. “These
rapid changes to the world’s largest and most typical ecosystems would impact the benefits which
they provide us with, including everything from food and materials, to the oxygen and water we
need for life.”
Ecosystems made up of a number of interacting species, rather than those dominated by one
single species, may be more stable and take longer to shift to alternative ecosystem states. “These
ecosystems provide opportunities to mitigate or manage the worst effects”, say the authors. For
example, elephants are termed a “key stone” species as they have a disproportionately(不成比例地)
large impact on the landscape — pushing over trees, but also dispersing seeds over large distances.
The authors state that the loss of key stone species, such as this, would lead to a rapid and dramatic
change in the landscape within our lifetime. “This is yet another strong argument to avoid degrading
our planet’s ecosystems; we need to do more to conserve biodiversity,” says Dr Gregory Cooper,
University of London.6
32. What is the phenomenon described in paragraph 2?
A. Many ecosystems are in danger currently.
B. Large ecosystems have reached a tipping point.
C. A new ecosystem will appear in the Amazon forest.
D. Ecosystems are changed mainly due to natural disasters.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The benefits of large ecosystems.
B. The ways to prepare for the changes.
C. The introduction to typical ecosystems.
D. The influences of ecosystems’ changes on humanity.
34. Which of the following best explains “mitigate” in the last paragraph?
A. cause. B. ease. C. increase. D. judge.
35. Why does the author mention elephants in the passage?
A. To prove the destructive power of elephants.
B. To present the great influences of large animals.
C. To explain the reason for the reducing grassland.
D. To stress the importance of conserving biodiversity.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
How to best protect your important files? Should you rely on one of the many cloud services
available today? The answer is “Yes”. Here's four reasons to invest in cloud storage.
36 .
Cloud services — such as OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox — can protect your
data from local threats, such as theft, fire, flood, nasty virus and hard drive failure.
37 , he might take your hard drive, too, unless you store it elsewhere. A flood or fire could
destroy both your computer and hard drive if kept in the same place.
Anywhere access.
With cloud services, you can access your backed-up stuff—such as documents or media — from
virtually any Internet-connected computer, tablet or smart-phone in the world. Most cloud services
have free apps that make it easy to download or upload files from your mobile device. 38
Sharing is super easy.
Cloud computing can also reduce over-crowding in someone's email box. Rather than trying to
email several large photos or videos to a colleague, friend or family member, which can block up
their email box, you can simply store them in the cloud and send a link to receivers to download the
goods. 39
Real-time cooperation.
40 , cloud computing lets people work together on projects in real-time. For example, two
or more employees can cooperate on a project together, instead of sending revisions back and forth
to each other.
A. Sufficient storage
B. Remote protection
C. If someone steals your laptop
D. This is incredibly convenient for them and easy to do
E. Even though they're in different geographic locations
F. You need more space than what free cloud storage solutions offer
G. You can access your stuff anywhere as long as you can get online7
