第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Chicago is next to a big, beautiful lake, Lake Michigan. In summer Lake Michigan
is warm and blue. In winter it is cold and grey.
On a cold January day, Jimmy was playing with his father on a Chicago beach,
skiing with a sled (雪橇). He pushed the sled down a small hill and the sled went onto
the ice of Lake Michigan. He ran after the sled and onto the ice, but suddenly the ice
broke, and Jimmy fell into the cold water!
Jimmy's father jumped into the water, but he couldn't find Jimmy. Men from the
Chicago Fire Department arrived. Twenty minutes later they found Jimmy and pulled
him out of the water, but he was not breathing.
The paramedics (护理人员) worked on Jimmy for one hour. Luckily enough, he
began to breathe, and his heart began to beat again. The paramedics then rushed Jimmy
to the hospital.
Doctors put Jimmy on a cold bed and gave him some medicine. In time, Jimmy's
body gradually became warm. After eight days in the hospital, Jimmy woke up, but he
couldn't walk or talk. He stayed in the hospital for six weeks. Every day he got better.
Then he was moved to another hospital where he stayed for seven weeks. Eventually he
was able to walk, talk, and play again!
Jimmy was in the water for 20 minutes, but he is still alive. How is it possible?
This is because the water was ice cold. Usually the brain needs a lot of oxygen (氧
气), but when it's very cold, the brain works slowly and does not need as much oxygen.
Jimmy's father has another reason. He says, "Jimmy is a good boy and he knows I love
him very much. He will never let me down."
41. Jimmy fell into the cold water because ______
A. he wanted to skate on Lake Michigan.
B. he skied with his sled on Lake Michigan

Life saving At-Home Checkup
More importance is attached to physical fitness nowadays. However, staying fit can be
expensive when going to professional agencies for medical checkups. Here we show
you three ways to do medical checkup at home, try them for a rough idea about your
health condition.
1. Balance On One Leg
Hold for up to 60 seconds. If you fall down early, you may be at higher risk for brain
decline. In a Japanese study, 30 percent of older adults who could balance for only 20
seconds or fewer had microbleeds in the brain, an early sign of risk for stroke or
dementia(痴呆). These microbleeds can affect balance, memory, and decision making.
2. Touch Your Toes
Sit with your back straight, then lean forward and try to touch your
toes. Not even close? You might be at risk for heart problems. By using this test,
University of North Texas researchers found that some old inflexible folks have to have
the heart work harder to provide enough blood, raising the risk of heart attack or stroke.
3. Sitting To Standing
Time how long it takes to lift and lower yourself from a chair ten times as
fast as you can. Senior adults who did ten repetitions in 21 seconds or fewer were less
likely to die over the next 13 years than those who took longer. The test requires muscle
strength, balance, and heart fitness; being slow could mean underlying disease before
symptoms arise.
The above are home tests everyone could do to keep you fit and they don’t require much
time or money. Learn what possible dangers are hiding inside you and how to deal with
them.

Are you thinking about changing your job? Your job is among the most important
things in your life, and changing it is one of the most stressful decisions you will ever
make.
Be Passionate (充满热情的)
The reason why you would even consider a job change in the first place is probably
because you feel passionate about something. There is no sense in making a change if
you are not going to be any happier than you already are. You may be earning a
five-figure salary, but if it is not making you happy, then it might be a good time to
change your job.
Do Your Research
Make sure that before you make the final decision you do some thorough ( 彻 底 的 )
research on available opportunities. You need to analyze what skills you have and what
skills you may need to learn for your new job. You should be confident about salary
prospects ( 前 景 ) and other related information. You may have lots of expectations
about the job you want, but doing the necessary research will help you look beyond this
rosy picture.
Job Exploration
Changing your job can be overwhelming. Ask yourself questions such as:
▲ Why am I exploring this job?
▲ Shall I need additional training or education?
▲ What are the opportunities and risks of pursuing (追求) this job?
These questions will help give you some very necessary answers. You can’t really
begin on the path to a job change until you know why you want to change and how you
will do about it.
48. According to the author, a job change must ______.
A. bring you a higher income
B. make you feel happier
C. lead to a change in position
D. be objected by a boss
49. Before making a job change, you need to research all of the following EXCEPT
______.
A. the advantages you have
B. the skills you need to learn
C. the ideas of friends and family
D. salary expectations and other related information
50 In this passage the author seems to suggest that ______.
A. changing jobs is reasonable now that you are not satisfied with what you are doing
B. can be done quickly when you are young
C. changing jobs means more opportunities than challenges and risks
D. changing jobs can be difficult to decide, and you shouldn’t start the process
quickly
