C
For the past two years I have been travelling and living abroad. Home has become more of a
feeling than a place. I feel at home when I am with my family in London, but I also feel at home in
Italy with friends I love. Home is no longer a picture of a house with a front door and some windows.
It is more complicated than that.
This is one of the reasons that celebrating the new year has become very important for me. I do
not care about "New Year’s resolutions(愿望)” - living abroad has made me constantly reconsider
what kind of person I want to be and how I will live my life, so I don't feel the need to plan for change:
I live for change.
New Year’s Eve has become my time to reconnect with the friends that makes me feel at home.
Every year we try to reunite wherever we are and remember the time when we knew each other so well
that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other again. Last year, we
travelled to a cottage in Ireland where we had no internet and no neighbours. In the middle of the
countryside, away from our big and constantly changing lives, we were able to become like a little
family again.
This year, we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and
life and joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same-I
felt at home again and we felt like a family again.
A lot of people feel that New Year’s Eve cannot live up to expectations. Ideas such as the "New
Year's kiss" and "resolutions" create a lot of pressure for people to have a night to remember, a night
that will change their lives and perhaps make the next year one worth living. I think those people are
missing the point. If Christmas is about family, why can't New Year be about friends?
28.What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph I probably mean?
A. Family. B. Living abroad.
C. Home. D. Staying with friends.
29.Why doesn't the author care about "New Year's resolutions"?
A. New Year’s resolutions cannot be reached.
B. His lifestyle makes him always ready for change.
C. It's meaningless to make any big changes in life.
D. Making New Year's resolutions creates much pressure.
30.What does the author try to convey through his experiences in Ireland and Barcelona?
A. Life is peaceful and enjoyable.
B. Living abroad is a happy experience.
C. Staying with friends makes one feel at home.
D. Travelling abroad enriches one's life experience.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. New Year's Celebration:How? B. True Friendship: What?
C. Living Abroad: Comfortable or Complicated? D. Change:Plan it or Make it?
D
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet, publisher, painter, social activist and bookstore owner, has
been San Francisco’s honored poet. He turns 100 this month, and the city is making preparations to
celebrate him in style. Readings and performances and an open house will take place at City Lights,
the sacred bookstore he co-founded in 1953.
On March 24, 1919, Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born in Yonkers, New York. After spending his
early childhood in France, he received his BA from the University of North Carolina, an MA from
Columbia University, and a PhD from the Sorbonne.
He is the author of more than thirty books of poetry, including Poetry as Insurgent Art; A Coney
Island of the Mind. He has translated the works of a number of poets, including Nicanor Parra, Jacques
Prevert, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In addition to poetry, he is also the author of more than eight plays
and three novels, including Little Boy: A Novel, Love in the Days of Rage and Her.
In 1953, Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin opened the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco,
California. It became a nerve center for the Beats and other writers. Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and
other writers from that era were Easterners who dropped into San Francisco for a spell. In 2001 it was
made an official historic landmark. Now City Lights is almost certainly the best bookstore in the
United States. It’s filled with serious world literature of all kinds.
If City Lights is a San Francisco institution, Ferlinghetti himself is as much of one. He has
loomed over the city’s literary life. As a poet, he’s never been a critical favorite. But his flexible and
plain-spoken and often powerful work — he has published more than 50 volumes — has found a wide
audience. His collection “A Coney Island of the Mind” has sold more than 1 million copies, making it
one of the best-selling American poetry books ever published.
32.What can we learn about Ferlinghetti from Paragraph 2?
A. He had a happy childhood.
B. He received normal education.
C. He had a gift for writing novels.
D. He had written lots of poetry.
33.Which of the following best describes Ferlinghetti according to Paragraph 3?
A. Flexible. B. Optimistic. C. Outspoken. D. Productive.
34.Why is City Lights famous?
A. Because it is a nerve center for the youth.
B. Because its collections have a long history.
C. Because it is an official historic landmark.
D. Because it has many modern world literature.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To speak highly of a great poet.
B. To introduce some English poetry.
C. To promote values of City Lights.
D. To celebrate the birthday of Ferlinghetti.

Dear Rita,
I’m glad that you will compete in the final of the Chinese Speech Contest. Congratulation to you!
Here are my advice on how to make good preparations for your speech.
First, pick a interesting topic so that the audience won’t get boring. Second, do broad researches
on the topic to satisfy the audience’s hunger for knowledge. Then write your speech and turn to your
Chinese teachers for help, which advice will be beneficial. Besides, much attention should be paying
to your voice or body language. Try to speak as fluent as possible. In a word, you’d better do whatever
you can win the contest.
Where there is a will, there is a way. Looking forward to hearing from your good news.
Yours,
Joana
