However, we were doubtful. Could we really do it? What if no one liked it? What if we failed? What if... We had to think differently. As teens, we had little to lose by trying and a lot to lose by letting this opportunity slip by, so we decided to give it a shot. Locked up in our small 10x10 foot bedroom, which reached 103 degrees on hot summer days, we just started writing. We wrote a list of goals, people we wanted to meet, things we wanted to own, as well as inspirational quotations — anything to keep us focused and motivated. A few weeks later, a family friend offered us two tickets to a local business conference where Jack Canfield was the keynote speaker. The event was a valuable experience and at the end of it, we waited in line for over thirty minutes to personally speak with Jack. We shared our book idea with him and he didn't laugh! Instead, he offered us the support, encouragement, and insight we needed to realize our goal. We finally completed our first book, Cool Stuff They Should Teach in School. The full process took three and a half years of hard work and sacrifices, but in the end, it was worth every minute. It was such a strange but rewarding feeling to walk into a bookstore and see our book on the shelves. Since its publication, we have enjoyed seeing its impact on other young people and receiving e-mails from readers almost every day. Sure enough, requests to speak at various venues soon came rolling in. All of us have opportunities around each day, but most people don't recognize them because they're often disguised as hard work. It comes down to our ability to see problems as opportunities and our willingness to take a leap of faith without the guarantee of success. As Michael Nolan once said, “It's not who we are that holds us back; it's who we think we're not.” 24. The author and his brother decided to write a book ______. A. to get some experience B. to encourage their peers C. to call for readers' support D. to share something with others 25. How did they manage to finish their first book? A. By focusing on small goals. B. By turning to publishers for help. C. By staying focused and motivated. D. By seeking constant help from Canfield. 26. Why do most people often fail to achieve success? A. Because they are actually afraid of hard work. B. Because they regard opportunities as problems. C. Because they don't have the same opportunities. D. Because they don't have the willingness to succeed. 27. The main purpose of the author's writing the passage is to _____. A. criticize B. inform C. praise D. Inspire C Dolly Parton, an American musician, is used to performing for big crowds. But after her set this year at Glastonbury, Britain’s largest music festival which can date back to 1970, she admitted a butterfly was in her stomach. Since that show, her album Blue Smoke has stayed near the top of the album chart for eight weeks. Live music is flourishing (繁荣) even as sales of recorded music have decreased greatly. In the past two years, it has grown by 15%. Live music lovers now spend more than €l billion a year on tickets and almost half that on food, drink and the like. In the early 1990s, Britain had few festivals. But around 450 will take place this year. The festival season, once limited to July and August, now stretches until early autumn. On the first weekend of September, four festivals battle it out. One reason was a change of the licensing laws, which made it easier to put on a show outdoors. The recession (经济衰退) helped too: Britons who could no longer afford foreign holidays found a weekend of camping in a muddy field more attractive. Ageing crowds are another bonus. Older people have more cash to spend on festivals and their demands have helped make festivals safer and more pleasant. Security at bigger festivals has grown much tighter. Fancy food and drinks have replaced cheap hot dogs and beer. All this is changing the way the music industry works. Festivals are increasingly seen as a way for artists to attract fans. Newer names find them essential: Clean Bandit, a British band who brought out their first album this year, is performing at around 20 festivals this summer. And music managers are increasingly taking into account how successfully artists will perform at big outdoor festivals before deciding to sign them. 28. What do we know about Dolly Parton? A. She is an inexperienced performer. B. Glastonbury used to be her favorite festival. C. Glastonbury’s large audience made her nervous. D. Her album Blue Smoke was an instant hit in the UK. 29. Which of the following can indicate live music is flourishing in Britain? A. The licensing laws have been changed. B. The festival season lasts longer than before. C. Ticket prices of music festivals have increased by 15%. D People are willing to spend more money on recorded music. 30. What’s older people’s contribution to outdoor festivals? A. Helping attract huger crowds of fans. B. Spending more money on food and drink. C. Offering music festivals financial support. D. Urging organizers to offer a comfortable experience. 31. Why are music festivals important to new artists? A. They may change Britain’s music industry. B. They can be effectively promoted at the festivals. C. They can cooperate with some big-name artists. D. They may make the acquaintance of music managers. D Italy and China has agreed to jointly advance the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) ( 一 带 一 路 ), which aims to build a trade and infrastructure network to connect Asia with Europe and Africa along ancient trade routes. Italy will use this opportunity to cooperate with China to develop its northern ports and the InvestItalia program, and promote cooperation in all fields. Despite some skepticism, the BRI has developed into one of the world's largest cooperation platforms and become a hot public good. More than 120 countries and 29 international organizations have signed agreements with China up to date, bringing all sorts of development opportunities to parties of the BRI, including the construction of Kenya's first high-speed expressway, the first cross-sea bridge in the Maldives, and the formation of the car industry in Belarus. The inclusion of Italy into the BRI makes Italy the first G7 country to formally join the Initiative, and sets a new milestone in the process of building the Belt and Road. What makes the BRI unique is that it is an initiative for win-win cooperation rather than zero-sum competition. As everyone knows, the BRI has its origin in the ancient Silk Road trade route that linked China with many places in the world, including the Italian cities of Rome and Venice. Italy is a natural fit for the ambitious project because of its historical connections with China, and also because of the need to be open rather than closed, to cooperate rather than confront. In this fast-changing world, seeking win-win progress is the best path forward for all countries. In China, it is said that without a big breakthrough in thinking, there will be no big leap in practice; and without a big leap in practice, there will be no great development. A number of Chinese ideas and initiatives have been formed with the goal of building a community of common destiny in mind. Under the BRI, we can expect China to deepen policy coordination, facilities connectivity, free trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds. The revival of China as a great power is a blessing to the world, contributing to the building of a better world. 32. How does the author develop the second paragraph? A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons. C. By reasoning and analyzing. D. By describing important events. 33. What can we learn from the last but one paragraph? A. China has become a superpower. B. China puts others' interests before its own. C. China has been seeking development for all. D. China is well-known for its traditional ideas. 34. What does the underlined part “zero-sum competition” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Only one participant will win. B. None of the participants will win. C. All participants will gain something. D. Some participants will win at the cost of others. 35.What’s the best title of the passage? A. The revival of China as a great power. B. Construction along ancient trade routes. C. A milestone in building BRI has been set. D. Italy and China reached an agreement on BRI. You may have heard of the word “pub” . It is short for public house. There are around 60,000 pubs in the U.K. One of the oldest pubs,Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St. Albans,Hertfordshire,is located in a building that dates back to the eleventh century. 36 People talk, eat, drink, meet their friends and relax there. Pubs often have two bars, one usually quieter than the other, and many have a garden where people can sit in summer. Children can go into pub gardens with their parents. Groups of friends normally buy “rounds” of drinks. 37 It is sometimes difficult to get served when pubs are busy:The bar staff will usually serve those who have been waiting the longest at the bar first. Most pubs offer a complete range of beers, local and imported, with German,Belgian and French beers being in demand. 38 As a matter of fact, pubs sell soft drinks, too. The legal age to purchase alcohol is 18 in the UK. People aged 16 and 17,with the license's permission, may have only one glass of wine during a meal. 39 It is illegal to sell alcohol to someone who already appears drunk. A fourteen-year-old may enter a pub unaccompanied by an adult if he orders a meal. Children may enter a pub with their parents until 9 p.m.,which lets families enjoy reasonably priced pub meals together. 40 Customs in British pubs differ from those in American bars. In most pubs in the U.K.,you must go to the bar to order drinks and food and pay for your purchases immediately. A. British people like drinking beers in pubs. B. Pubs are an important part of British life. C. But they must be with an adult and the adult orders it. D. In the salon bar the atmosphere is quieter and there are fewer people. E. And it also allows pubs to play their traditional roles as community centers. F. The person whose turn it is will buy drinks for all the members of the group. Who we are looking for 中 Are you a woman between the ages 20 and 30? Have you had at least two years of experience as a professional actress? 根据 About the role 中的 This is a silent role 故选 A。 23. 根据 How to apply 中的 Your work(s) (Please attach the VIDEO/LINK.) 根据第一段第二句 “My brother Kyle and I were thinking about writing a book because it seemed like a good way to reach others and share what we had learned.” 根据第二段内容和第二段最后一句 “anything to keep us focused and motivated”,结合第三段 Jack Canfield 对作者兄弟俩的鼓励,可以判断 C 项正确。 26. 根据最后一段第一句“...but most people don’t recognize them because they’re often disguised as hard work.” Dolly Parton, an American musician, is used to performing for big crowds. But after her set this year at Glastonbury, Britain’s largest music festival which can date back to 1970, she admitted a butterfly was in her stomach.“美国音乐家多莉·帕顿(Dolly Parton)习 惯在大群人面前表演。但今年她在英国最大的音乐节格拉斯顿伯里(Glastonbury)的演出结束后, 她承认她很紧张。格拉斯顿伯里音乐节可以追溯到 1970 年。”可知,Dolly Parton 虽然常常给 众多观众表演,但在 Glastonbury 这么大规模的音乐节上表演,她还是感到非常紧张(a butterfly in one’s stomach 意思是“某人心里感到紧张”)。故选 C。 29.推理判断题。根据第二段的 The festival season, once limited to July and August, now stretches until early autumn. “曾经只在 7 月和 8 月举行的节日季节现在已经延长到初秋。”可知,户外音 乐季的时间变长了,由此判断出这能体现英国音乐节的繁荣。故选 B。 30.细节理解题。根据第四段 Ageing crowds are another bonus. But what happened to your sweater? I thought you had one on this morning. W: Yes, but I got hot and left it in a taxi. At least it’s a perfect T-shirt day. Text 2 M: Which dress did you finally decide to buy at the clothing store? W: Well, I was going to buy the black one, but it was 40 dollars. I thought it was a little expensive. So I bought another one instead and it saved me 10 dollars. Text 3 W: What’s that at the top of your tree? It looks like a Barbie doll. M: That’s an angel. Every Christmas tree should have an angel at the top. W: Oh. We always just put a star at the top of ours. Text 4 W: Stop scratching your arm, Sam. M: I can’t help it, Gina. It’s so hot outside, and the bugs just love me this year! W: Well, I hope you close the windows tonight. Here, put on this medicine. Text 5 M: Back already? I thought you had three baskets of clothes to wash. W: I did. And I still do. All the machines were full. M: That’s too bad. I guess you’ll have to go shopping again. Those clothing shops must love you. Text 6 M: Didn’t you want to go to the western art museum? I thought you were interested in cowboys. W: I only wanted to go there because it’s free. Oh, and it’s really close to home. But now I’m interested in the modern art exhibit. M: That’s a three-hour drive from here! And it’ll be so crowded there. W: But mom gave me fifty dollars to spend on my spring break. And I really want to go. M: I’m not sure I can drive you there, Linda. My spring break is a week later than yours. W: I know. But we could go on the weekend. Come on! It’s a nice drive, Sam. M: OK. I guess that’s what big brothers are for. Text 7 M: Yes, Teresa? Did you have a question? W: Oh, sorry, Mr. Johnson. I was just stretching. M: You raised your hand… W: Yes, I just had a little pain in my arm from all the careful notes I’ve taken. I know you said to save all questions for the end of class. Sorry for the confusion. M: No wonder you had to stretch! OK, class. I was just telling you about the emperor kneeling in the snow. We’ve seen this before in a famous painting. If you’ll just turn to page 54 in your textbooks… Yes, Teresa? Do you have another pain in your arm? W: No, Mr. Johnson. I was wondering if I could use the restroom. M: No need to ask, Teresa. Just go ahead next time. Please come back quickly. I don’t want to start the short film until you’re back with us. W: Thank you, Mr. Johnson. I’ll be back in less than two minutes. Text 8 W: You look exhausted, Carl. Shouldn’t you be more rested since classes are out? M: I wish! I do feel better without all that homework to grade and students to send emails to, but I just have a lot of work to do right now. W: What’s going on? M: Well, it all started when we found this baby bear in our garage. We took it in and raised it. W: Wait…you have a pet bear? I’ll bet it’s lovely! M: No. That was two years ago. We let it go to live in the forest with the other bears. The problem is, every spring, people bring us baby bears from their garages to raise. All summer, we feed them, clean up after them, and play with them. I was up all night with a hungry “baby”. W: What a lot of work! I guess it’s part of living next to the forest. M: Well, we love animals, you know. And this year, we’re hoping to raise some money for equipment and food. You wouldn’t believe how many apples a young bear can eat! W: What else do you buy? M: Cages, small toys to keep them entertained, and lots and lots of towels. Bears are very messy! Text 9 M: Is it midnight in here? Turn on a light, Cindy! Or at least open the curtains. W: Bob, I know it’s dark, but this is comfortable to me. Anytime the light hits my eyes, I feel worse. M: How can you get any work done? W: I’m not working. I have a really bad headache. M: But you have that exam tomorrow. If you don’t study, you’ll be in hot water with your professor. W: But I can’t even open my eyes. I won’t be able to take the test. M: You should see a doctor. W: I’m actually too sick to go to a doctor’s office. M: Let me take you! I can put a bag over your head so no light gets in. W: OK. Get a big pillow to stick over my head, and we’ll get into your fancy car. M: Oh, good. I’m going to call ahead and get you an appointment. Text 10 My name is Wendy, and my presentation is on British Christmas traditions. I know what you’re all thinking: We’re American! We know about Christmas. Well, yes, we share Christmas trees, gifts, and Santa Claus, but the UK has other traditions. For example, you’ll find Christmas crackers at every British Christmas dinner table, but they aren’t food. They’re paper tubes with a gift inside. That loud pop sound is an important part of Christmas to us. The Christmas dinner also has completely different desserts in England. We have Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, and sweet pie. All three are made out of dried fruit and nuts, but they look and taste a little different from each other. I think your fruitcake is similar to our Christmas pudding, but I haven’t seen Christmas cake or sweet pie anywhere. I’ve also never seen a Christmas pantomime here. Pantomimes are silent drama scenes that are acted out by special actors. They became a Christmas tradition in 1800 when “Grimaldi”, a popular story, was performed around Christmas. Nowadays, we perform them at home or see them in theaters, but they don’t really have anything to do with Christmas stories. They’re mostly fairy tales like The Three Bears and Jack and the Beanstalk.
