Australia is known as the “lucky country” with its sunny zones, beautiful beaches and
relaxed lifestyle. But did you know that it is also a “happy” country, at least according to
well-being measures?
In fact, Australia scores above average in almost all of the 11 well-being dimensions
measured by the OECD Better Life Index. It does exceptionally well on the environment and
health. Australians breathe some of the cleanest air, with
far less of the tiny particulate matter that gets into the
deepest part of the lungs than in many other countries–a
PM10 level of only 13.1 micrograms per cubic metre, as
opposed to the average of 20.1 micrograms for the
OECD. They can expect to live up to 82 years of age,
compared with an average of 80 years in the OECD. And as well as being healthy, they score
highly on civic engagement, thanks largely to the compulsory voting system: 93% of Australians
turned out to vote in the most recent general elections, the highest percentage in the OECD.
Australia’s regions are also happy. In fact, according to the OECD’s new Regional
Well-Being, all eight Australian states rank among the best 20% of all 362 regions studied
around the world in civic engagement, environment and income. And Canberra, the Capital
Territory, ranks first in Australia, beating the other regions in six of the nine well-being
dimensions. Even the low-performing regions still fare better than the OECD average in most of
the well-being indicators.
But it is not a perfect score sheet. There is wide inequality between the Australian regions,
especially in health and safety where the country ranks fourth and fifth worst in terms of
disparities. Education is also a problem in some regions, as the share of workers with at least a
secondary diploma living in the lowest performing Australian regions is 8 percentage points
lower than the OECD average.
Perhaps the most surprising result of all is Australia’s low score in work-life balance. More
than 14% of Australian employees work for more than 50 hours per week, much more than the
OECD average of almost 9%. This hardly squares with the country’s reputation for an easy and
leisurely lifestyle, a fact that has been picked up by the Australian users of the Better Life Index,
ranking work-life balance as the most important factor for a better life.
38. According to the passage, the author most likely agrees that ________.
A. Australians vote out of consciousness of civil rights
6
B. Australia is a paradise in the world free from smog
C. Australia is a country poor in safety and education
D. Australians’ long life mainly relies on environment
39. What does the underlined phrase square with (in Para 5) most likely mean?
A. collide with B. submit to C. correspond with D. consist in
40. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Australia: The Happy Country B. Australia: The Surprising Country
C. Australia: The Lucky Country D. Australia: The Unequal Country

Amizade means friendship in Portuguese. It is also the name of a service organization in the
United States that places volunteers in projects mostly in developing countries. Amizade’s
executive director, Eric Hartman, thought of the idea in Brazil in 1994, which explains the
Portuguese name.
The Amizade Global Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs placed three hundred
volunteers in nine countries last year. These American university students and others worked in
thirteen communities.
Amizade works with local groups and individuals on service and learning projects. The
local groups define and direct the projects. The volunteers learn about local cultures and make
friends as they work in the community.
Amizade charges college students as much as ten thousand dollars for three months of
experience.
Volunteers generally provide labor and do things like teaching and assisting at local health
centers. They can also do research. College students can earn work-study credits.
Participants in programs have included a twelve-year-old boy and a man in his eighties.
There are programs in Ghana, Tanzania, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico and Jamaica. There are
also programs in Germany, Poland, Northern Ireland and the United States.
Recently, in Tanzania, thirteen Amizade volunteers worked on systems to harvest rainwater
from the roofs of homes. They worked on the project in the Karagwe area, in the northwestern
part of the country. Eric Hartman, the director, described the water collection systems in blog
postings from Tanzania earlier this month.
Rain falls on the metal roofs and flows into aluminum gutters (排水沟). These gutters carry
the water to a large collection tank on the side of the home.
The rain harvesting systems mean that a family member no longer has to walk long
distances to get water. So there is more time for farming or schoolwork. The systems are
7
especially useful for those who are too sick to go a long way for water.
In the Caribbean island nation of Jamaica, Amizade places volunteers with a local partner
in the small community of Peters field. The volunteers live with local families. They help
children with schoolwork and computer skills. They also visit the sick and work on building,
painting and other restoration projects in the community.
41. The intention of Amizade is ________.
A. to help people make foreign friends
B. to train volunteers to teach English
C. to offer services and projects to developing countries
D. to place volunteers in projects in developing countries
42. Which of the following can’t the Amizade volunteers do in the projects?
A. Make good friends. B. Learn about local culture.
C. Direct the projects. D. Help children with homework.
43. If you are a college student and want to become a volunteer of Amizade, ________.
A. you must be no older than 80
B. you must come from America
C. you must be strong-minded
D. you must pay to be admitted
44. The writer tells the story in Tanzania to show readers ________.
A. some knowledge can be acquired from the blog
B. volunteers in Amizade can make a difference
C. Tanzania is a country desperate for fresh water
D. more volunteers are required for Amizade

Snow had come in time to make it a white Christmas in the small village of Barrington,
Vermont. In fact, it had snowed on and off for the last three days prior to Christmas Eve. Snow
was deep. It was blown into snowdrifts four to five feet high. The village looked like a picture
postcard of an idyll Christmas scene. But there was a problem, the heavy snow on the roads to
come to a stop. Children of the village were worried. How could Mr. Nathan Jackson, the
storyteller, make it to the village’s Christmas Eve celebration?
It was a grand night, full of traditions. The village Christmas tree was selected from the
ample pine forest that covered the hillsides surrounding this picturesque village. The tradition
was that the sixth grade pupils would be the ones who selected the tree. Their families would set
up the tree on the stage in the large community hall. The tree was decorated each year with
8
special ornaments. These ornaments had special meaning to the villages because they
demonstrated stories told by Mr. Nathan Jackson.
Christmas Eve the community hall was full. Grown –ups had gathered to the rear of the hall,
while the children took up their customary positions in front of the stage. Many of them on the
floor with pillows, blankets or just heavy jackets to soften their seats on the hardwood floor.
The children were all hopeful that Mr. Jackson would make it to the Christmas Eve
celebration. He hadn’t missed a year since he started story telling in 1969.
Children and adults all had the storyteller on their minds. Conversations throughout the
great hall centered on stories that were told in past years. Everyone had a favorite. When groups
of people agreed on a particular story they would share their remembrances by saying, “ Do you
remember when he told the story about…yes, it was 1969 when he first told the special story
about the Christmas tree he called it the ‘tree of life’.”
“…And do you remember how he told the story about the star window in our church. The
star was just an ordinary clear glass but it turned magically into a gold star on the Christmas Eve
in 1987.”…..
“…Oh yes, my favorite story was the one about the train that overcame many problems to
bring us Christmas gifts from distant relatives. That was the year story of 1974
or ’75…whatever…it was a good story…and don’t forget the funny one that us how Santa
Claus’ beard had grown so long.”
The telephone on the wall of the community center rang. All talking stopped so that Mrs.
Anderson could answer it. “Oh no!” said Mrs. Anderson. “That is too bad,” she continued. “You
did! They’re on their way? All right…our best to Mr. Jackson. Thank you.” She hung up the
phone.
“What was that all about?” asked the town mayor. Mrs. Anderson said the call was Mrs.
Jackson, Nathan’s wife. She said he was too ill to make the trip. However, she said that she
made something for us. It will be a story gift for the year.
“What is it?” asked the mayor.
“She didn’t say.” answered Mrs. Anderson. “ She said their son and nephew are bringing
it.”
One of the children spoke up. “How will they get here? The roads are all covered with
snow!”
Mrs. Anderson turned to the questioning child and said, “Christopher, they will be coming
by a horse drawn sled and they are already on their way.” Suddenly sleigh bells were heard
outside! It sounds like they were here! The son and the nephew walked to the front of the hall,
9
up the steps to the stage. They unfolded the quilt. The son pointed out the tree of life… the
church’s golden star…. Santa’s long beard.
The son then spoke. “I don’t think that my father will be telling any more stories. But he
did want my mother to include other patches in the Christmas quilt--- of untold stories: so that in
the future years the quilt can be hung for all to see. Old remembered stories could be retold.
Imagination could be used to tell new stories. Mrs. Anderson… could you tell me the story about
your favorite cookie jar. Mr. Johnson, how about your wood shop and the rocking horse you
made for your granddaughter and grandson. And your Mr. Mayor…about the year we had no
Christmas snow. You made snowmen out of straw and bed sheets.”
Turning to the crowd the son continued. “Do you see your story in my mother’s Christmas
quilt? Close your eyes and think about it!”
To this day the stories in Barrington, Vermont have a special meaning to all who hear them.
I now charge you parents to gather your family on Christmas Eve…share your traditions…your
love…but also His love---- who came to us as an ordinary baby so many years ago.

第四部分 任务型阅读(共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
注意:每空只填 1 个单词。
Could you believe that the ideal person is never the best at anything? Our heads are so full
of ambitions about wealth and power that we spin our wheels until we burn ourselves out and are
left hopeless and exhausted.
There is great pressure to attain the highest level of achievement. By satisfying our vanity
(虚荣) we do ourselves more harm than good. The only way to achieve sustainable happiness is
to practice the Golden Mean.
The idea of the Golden Mean has existed for thousands of years. It is at the centre of both
Eastern and Western philosophy and has more influence than the teachings of Aristotle and
Confucius. The idea is simple. Every quality has extremes at both ends. The Golden Mean is the
natural balance between these extremes. At this harmonious point goodness and beauty are
achieved.
Socrates used the example of extreme devotion to athletics versus ( 与 … 相 比 ) extreme
devotion to music to illustrate this idea. The athlete becomes overly aggressive and cruel, while
the musician becomes overly soft and womanish. The ideal is someone who practices both
athletics and music and acquires a harmonious mixture of both qualities.
Consider an example from modern times that I’m sure everyone has observed. The first
person is extremely career driven. Each day he focuses on advancing himself. He spends long
hours at the office, competes mercilessly with his coworkers, and flatters his superiors. As a
result he has almost no personal life. The second person’s only pursuit is leisure. He likes to
waste time with his friends watching television and playing video games.
Which of these persons is superior? Many people would argue for the hard worker. But at
second glance his life is rather cold. His obsession (痴迷) with success has conflicted with his
coworkers and left him without a family. He may become rich, but how will he enjoy it? The
second man is no better. He has wasted his life in laziness. He has refused to develop himself
11
and exists as a lazybones. Both men are worthy of pity.
I think we’d all agree the ideal would be somewhere in between these two people. So how
do we find the abstract Golden Mean?
It all starts with setting the right goals. Whenever you make a goal you need to do it with
the right intention. Don’t set goals with the intention to command other people. Instead, try to
start with a goal that is in between total selfishness and total selflessness.
The next step to reaching the Golden Mean is knowing your limits. You need to know when
one more project is going to stress you out. The idea is to maintain balance at all times.
Another step to achieving the Golden Mean is being aware of your personal needs. Sure we
need money and success, but having good relationships with friends and family are just as
important.
I know the Golden Mean is hard to live by, but it is the key to finding your inner confidence.
Ben Franklin said, “The wise keep learning from the mistakes of others, fools, scarcely from
their own.” Next time you find yourself willing to do anything to be the best of the best, take a
moment to reconsider. You may find it is better to be the best “you” you can be.
What is the Golden Mean?

Chinese Dream
“Chinese Dream” has become a hot topic among Chinese people.
According to a recent survey by CCTV, different groups of people have
different dreams.
Urban residents dream of having easy access to modern transportation so
that life will be easier and more convenient. Besides, they hope to enjoy a
better living environment and more public facilities. What college students
are mainly concerned about is employment. So their dream is to have
well-paid jobs where they can bring their potentials into full play. Meanwhile,
they hope the government will strengthen its supervision over food so that
people can have more pollution-free and green food. As for the farmers, they
hope that they can enjoy good and affordable medical care and their children
can receive a good education.
As far as I am concerned, my dream is to be enrolled by a good university
and be a talent who can make contributions to my country. Besides, I dream
there to be practical reforms in education so that high school students have
enough time to sleep and exercise. (151words)
