Auctions (拍卖行) are everywhere. Here are just a few standouts and some of the
areas they specialize in. All have brick-and-mortar (实体的) sales rooms in addition to
online buying.
Leslie Hindman AuctioneersHeadquarters: Chicago
Founded: 1982
Best bets: contemporary art, jewelry
The founder, Leslie Hindman, has been on an expansion kick from her Chicago
base and now runs eight offices across the country. Ms. Hindman said that plenty of
items sell at her house for around $500. As in the auction world generally, jewelry and
contemporary art receive lots of attention from bidders ( 出 价 者 ), and in 2017 a
diamond ring sold for $97,000.
Swann Auction Galleries
Headquarters: New York
Founded: 1941
Best bets: books, works on paper, African-American art
Founded as a rare-book auctioneer, Swann still holds dozens of such sales a year.
The president, Nicholas D. Lowry, noted that Swann was the first auction house to sell
old photographs, in 1952. The house has also had a department of African-American art
for 12 years.
Stair Galleries
Headquarters: Hudson, N.Y.
Founded: 2001
Best bets: English and Continental furniture and paintings, modern and
contemporary art
Colin Stair, the founder and president, comes from a long line of antiques dealers.
Stair is frequented by dealers and bargain hunters, and it’s a place to find interesting
things like a George II carved walnut wing armchair, coming up as part of a sale on
April 28 and 29.
Heritage Auctions
Headquarters: Dallas
Founded: 1983
Best bets: coins, sports memorabilia, movie posters
With roots in coin auctions, Heritage has grown quite large. But their bread and butter are items that the company president, Greg Rohan, calls “the kinds of things that
everyone has.” “People aren’t buying what we’re selling for decoration or for resale,”
he added. “They’re buying things they absolutely love.”
21. At which place can you buy old photographs?
A. Swann Auction Galleries. B. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.
C. Stair Galleries. D. Heritage Auctions.
22. Who once sold antiques?
A. Greg Rohan. B. Colin Stair.
C. Leslie Hindman. D. Nicholas D. Lowry.
23. What can be learned about these auctions?
A. They are all run by local people. B. They are all located in New York.
C. They all have online shops. D. They all sell valuable artworks.

I arrived in this beautiful Spanish island at the start of September, full of enthusiasm and eager
to start work as an English teacher. I sorted all the necessary paperwork out and moved into a flat
of my own within the first couple of days. Great! Or so I thought. At 4 am and at several intervals
after that, I was rudely awoken by the cock that lives opposite me. Fantastic! I now have 5 extra
alarms every morning.
In the following weeks, I also started to notice a trend. Things in my flat started to break at the
rate of one object per day, like the hot water, bowls, cups, shower, doors or glass shelves. Yes, I am
clumsy but things just fell apart. If it wasn’t broken, it would either be dirty or missing. Using my
washing basket for the first time was pretty disgusting. When I took out my clothes, they were
swiftly followed by a hundred or so bugs that were living in the bottom.
As for the general lack of equipment in the house, there was no oven, tin opener, sharp knives
or potato peeler. It turns out making a burger from scratch wasn’t the best idea. I have a small
microwave and a grill. I thought the general understanding was never to put metal in a microwave
but I went with it. Smoke soon started to appear. I was not quite sure if it was the burger or the
grill but as soon as I opened the door, the electricity cut out. I spent the following 10 minutes in a dark, smoky room hunting for the power switch using the light from my mobile phone, which broke
the week after and left me without a connection to the outer world.
Luckily, I’m now borrowing a phone and my luck has returned. No more things have broken
(probably because there is nothing left to break). I’ve also realized that even if a flat looks pretty, it
doesn’t mean its contents work. I am also learning how to adapt to life with limited, broken utensils
(厨房用具).
24. What problem did the author have in the morning?
A. She got some noisy neighbors. B. Her sleep was disturbed by a rooster.
C. She often slept late. D. Her alarm failed to work.
25. What can we know about the author from Paragraph 2?
A. Her household articles were in poor condition.
B. Her flat was pretty old but comfortable.
C. She was quite satisfied with her flat.
D. She was a very careful woman.
26. What happened when the author was making a burger?
A. She broke her phone accidentally. B. She suffered a sudden power failure.
C. She was seriously injured. D. She made a terrible mistake.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Learning to live in a new flat. B. Why living abroad is not easy.
C. Remaining optimistic. D. How to choose a nice flat.
C
Binge-watching (刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show
in quick succession (一连串, 连续). With developments in the speed and connectivity
of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment
companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their
television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, “binge-watching” has been officially listed in
dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week
basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes,
many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will
automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults
who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a
third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have
neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking.
All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction.
Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: “The days of waiting a week for the
next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple
episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist,
are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online
media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity
begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a
problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much.
After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”
28. How did the writer develop the first paragraph?
A. By giving a definition. B. By telling a story.
C. By listing some examples. D. By analyzing the cause and effect.
29. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in para.
2?
A. for convenience. B. at the same time. C. in detail. D. free of charge.
30. What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ________.
A. people can’t control their feelings
B. people can’t resist the temptation
C. people have no patience to do workD. people are addicted to waiting for a new episode
31. What advice did the writer give at last?
A. To keep online media from stopping functioning.
B. To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.
C. To learn life lessons from the episodes.
D. To watch episodes in a moderate way.
D
In an apartment, people are having a party. They’re smiling and chatting with each
other; they’re drinking cocktails and enjoying snacks. But the mood lighting is a bit
strange. No candles or twinkling Christmas lights here. Instead, the light comes from
enormous green-glowing plants in the center of the table.
This is a model inside a museum in New York. The “people” are small silver
statues. But the plants are real. They’re watercress (水田芥) planted with nanoparticles
(纳米粒) that turn their stored energy into light. It’s a technology developed several
years ago by MIT chemical engineer Michael Strano. Now, Strano has partnered with
an architect, Sheila Kennedy, to explore how these plants might be a central part of our
homes and sustainable energy future.
The plants in the exhibit are newer versions. Their glow is based on an enzyme (酶)
called luciferase, which is what gives fireflies their light. Strano and his colleagues first
put luciferase and two molecules ( 分 子 ) that allow it to work inside a nanoparticle
carrier. They then immersed plants in a liquid containing the particles, and added high
pressure. The pressure pushed the particles into the leaves through tiny pores (气孔).
“For the last two decades, plants have been a part of architecture, but they’ve
always been used as green walls or roofs,” Kennedy says. However, the plants in
Kennedy’s models fill entire rooms, their leaves and stems going wherever they choose.
For her, this project was an interesting design challenge. She and her team had to figure
out how to bring in sufficient water and where to contain enormous amounts of soil.
The team is currently working on making the plants brighter and fixing light
particles in larger plants such as trees. They’re also eager to extend the duration of a
plant’s light from hours to days or weeks.32. What is special about the apartment according to the first two paragraphs?
A. It is modeled after a real one.
B. It is powered by nanoparticles.
C. Plants provide mood lighting for it.
D. Real people are enjoying themselves in it.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. What the model is like. B. What gives fireflies light.
C. How to make the plants glow. D. How the nanoparticles work.
34. What actually makes the plants produce light?
A. Pressure. B. Fireflies. C. Molecules. D. Luciferase.
35. What can we know about the plants in Kennedy’s models?
A. The plants still need water and soil.
B. The plants grow in restricted space.
C. The light of the plants can last weeks.
D. The plants have grown as large as trees.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
It’s a nightmare having to wait for exam results. 36 If you’re stressed out
after taking your exams, don’t worry! There are some steps you can take to calm down
and reduce your stress.
Take some deep breaths. Stress and anxiety can trigger your body’s “fight or flight”
response, making your breaths shallow and rapid. 37 Put one hand on your
chest and the other on your abdomen ( 腹 部 ). As you breathe, you should feel your
abdomen expand along with your chest.
Try not to go over the exam in depth straight afterwards. Some people find it
comforting to talk to friends a little about what they wrote. However, it only makes you
worry about the answers you can’t change. It is also a bad idea because your brain does not perform well under stressful conditions. You will be unable to think clearly right
after a stressful exam. 38
Get some exercise to relax. You might not feel like hitting the gym or going for a
run directly after an exam, but getting some moderate physical activity is a great way to
reduce stress! 39 If you’re stressed out over your exam, try doing exercise like
jogging, cycling or even a quick walk. Regular exercise has been shown to decrease
tension and improve your sleep.
40 Regardless of your results, you should celebrate the fact that you have
worked hard on your exams. Reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. If you can
do it with friends, all the better. Studies have shown that spending time with friends and
loved ones is an excellent way to relieve stress and promote a sense of calm and
well-being.
A. Spend time with positive people.
B. Do something enjoyable to relax.
C. Fight this stress response by taking deep breaths.
D. You may feel like you perform much worse than you actually do.
E. The situation will be worse if you’re not sure of your performance.
F. Whatever makes you laugh will help you sort out your post-exam stress.
G. It can produce endorphins (内啡肽), which are natural painkillers that boost your
mood.

第三部分 英语知识应用(共两节,满分 45 分)
第二节 (共 10 题, 每题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1 个单词)或括号内单词的正确形
式。
What defines a healthy city? Is it a place with a lot of open spaces 61 people can exercise and enjoy the fresh air? A place with little or no pollution? A place
in which people can 62 (free) socialize and express their ideas? Perhaps, it’s all
that plus more. Other considerations are the availability of health and fitness facilities,
an excellent healthcare program and sincere efforts by 63 local government to
actively promote health and wellness among its citizens. Of all the cities in the world,
one of the top six 64 (healthy) cities is Copenhagen, Denmark.
Copenhageners love to walk. Foot traffic accounts 65 80% of all traffic in
the Copenhagen city center. Those who prefer it can also bike. It is estimated that more
than a third of all work trips in Copenhagen 66 (carry) out on a bike. As for the
climate here, the city does not have the blessing of pleasant weather all year round.
67 everything starts to freeze, it turns several city squares into huge skating fields.
The frozen parts of the city also make 68 easier for residents to skate around.
The city also has museums and art galleries for the kids and 69 (grown-up). It
has the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Library housed in a rather
grand building 70 (call) the Black Diamond.
