Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness
today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness . Some have put their
hearts and efforts into their work.Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol.Meanwhile, untold
numbers have looked for it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic(异国的) vacation homes
and other popular “ toys”. Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are
looking for a lasting source of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand高三年级综合测试英语试题 第 4 页 共 12 页
the journey of finding it.I have heard many people say that, “I’ll be happy when I get my new
promotion.” Or “I’ll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.” It is dangerous because
it accepts that happiness is a “response” to having, being or doing something.
In life, we all experience stimulus(激励) and response.Today, some people think that an
expensive car is a stimulus, and happiness is a response; a great paying job is a stimulus, and
happiness is a response; a loving relationship is a stimulus, and happiness is a response . This
belief leaves us the thinking and feeling: I’ll be happy when …
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true.I believe that happiness is a stimulus
and a response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to
have more success in our work. When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving
relationships. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy
good health.Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make every day of our lives. For unknown reason to me,
many choose to be painful, unsuccessful and angry most of the time.Happiness is not something
that happens to us after we get something we want--we usually get things we want AFTER we
choose to be happy.

Early in the twentieth century, two famous scientists developed different ideas about dreams.
Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud published a book called The Interpretation of Dreams in
1900. Freud believed people often dream about things they want but cannot have. These dreams
are often linked to sex and aggression.
For Freud, dreams were full of hidden meaning. He tried t o understand dreams as a way to
understand people and why they acted or thought in certain ways. Freud believed that every
thought and every action started deep in our brains. He thought dreams could be an important way
to understand what is happening in our brains.
Freud told people what their dreams meant as a way of helping them solve problems or
understand their worries. For example, Freud said when people dream of flying or swinging, they
want to be free of their childhood. When a person dreams that a brother or sister or parent has died,
the dreamer is really hiding feelings of hatred for that person. Or a desire to have what the other
person has.
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung worked closely with Freud for several years. But he developed
very different ideas about dreams. Jung believed dreams could help people grow and understand
themselves. He believed dreams provide solutions to problems we face when we are awake.
He also believed dreams tell us something about ourselves and our relations with other people.

Two weeks before my 12th birthday, my teacher asked me to conduct an experiment. When I
mixed some powder together, they exploded. Molten liquid hit me in the face, but I felt no pain.
I vividly remember standing there in a state of calm. I thought I was in a dream, but however
hard I struggled to swim to the surface of consciousness, I couldn’t wake up. I didn’t understand
how terrifying it was until I heard people saying, " Who’s that?" That’s when I knew I was
unrecognizable.
I was taken to hospital, but the doctors didn’t know what to do with me. Later I was flown to
Houston for surgery. Between the ages of 13 and 16, I had 40 operations. As each operation came
and went, my vision would come back, then fade again. Eventually, it faded completely and I had
what was left of my eyes removed for cosmetic reasons.
Since then, I have lived in total darkness. Most blind people, even if they don’t have any sight
they’re aware of, are still able to sense light. That gives them a sense of day and night. But not me.
I absolutely lost that sense of time passing.
For many years, I felt my sight loss darkening my life like the loss of my parents from which I高三年级综合测试英语试题 第 8 页 共 12 页
would never recover. But when I was in my 40s, I realized I had to find a way to live. I trained to
become a counselor, and that has helped me see my experiences in a different way. I can’t fix
people’s broken lives — just like I can’t fix my sight — but I can help them find a way to
manage.
Sometimes it feels as if all the struggles and negative experiences I’ve lived through were in
fact a kind of preparation for helping others to make their own way towards the light.
33. How did the writer feel when the mixed powder exploded?
A. Painful. B. Frightened. C. Calm. D. Desperate.
34. What can we know about the writer?
A. She recovered her sight at last.
B. She just has slight sense of sight.
C. She is now living a meaningful life.
D. She received 40 operations in 28 years.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Telling her own experience.
B. Encouraging the blind to cheer up.
C. Calling on people to care for the blind.
D. Warning students doing experiments is dangerous.
