Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make
sure yours builds up.①Watch movies
“If you see the movie version of your favorite book you’re likely to have a deeper
understanding and knowledge of the words in it,” says Neuman, professor of Childhood
and Literacy Education at New York University . “Seeing and reading something on the
same topic is really important.”
②Read magazines
If you want to improve vocabulary, don’t just flip through your favorite magazine,
really read it.

Not only will it force you to set aside time in your day to read, it’s also a good way to
discover books you might not normally be drawn to.
⑤Listen to the radio
Those types of programs can expose you to topics you may not be familiar with.
Don’t miss these middle school vocabulary words adults still don’t know.
⑥Pay attention to your surroundings
Next time you walk down a busy street or take a walk in the park, try to describe
what you’re seeing as much as possible inside your head.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it
as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and
white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the more wonderful thing in the
world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and
brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in
action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感
情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our
happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way
she chose that she did forgive me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace— it
seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother.
I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she
was not.
Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased
that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers
inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always
chose the act that speaks louder than words.
24. The word “gulf” in the passage means ______.
A. deep understanding between the old and the young
B. different ideas between the mother and the daughterC. free talks between mother and daughter
D. part of the sea going far in land
25. What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking forgiveness?
A. She had never received the letter.
B. For years, she often talked about the letter.
C. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.
D. She read the letter again and again till she died.
26. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. My letter to Mother
B. Mother and Children
C. My mother’s Desk
D. Talks between Mother and Me
C
The Greatest show on Earth
The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sports in the world. Every four
years, many countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honor in
sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are
gold medals and glory. But there is honor, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is
in the spirit of the Olympics—to take part is what matters.
The Olympic Games always start in a bright color and action. The teams of all the
nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for
the Greek team to march in first, for it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team
of the country where the Games are being held—the host country—marches in last.
The runner with the Olympic torch (火炬) then enters the stadium and lights the
flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath (宣誓) on behalf of
all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen
march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.
The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in
the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but there are a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors
take part in different sports,like riding,shooting,swimming,and cross-country
running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual
winners and for national teams.
More and more women are taking part in the Games. They first competed in 1900,
in tennis and golf. Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912.But it was not
until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now they compete in
all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may
compete in the same events as men.
27. Why is there honor for the losers as well as for the winners?
A. Because losers and winners should be equally treated.
B. Because failure is the mother of success.
C. Because losers need encouragement.
D. Because what really matters is to take part in the Olympic Games.
28. Which of the following is a long-established practice in the opening ceremony?
A. Runners enter the stadium with torches.
B. Each team puts on a wonderful display.
C. The Greek team marches in first.
D. Sportsmen and sportswomen wear magnificent clothes.
29. Who takes the Olympic oath?
A. A judge from a foreign country.
B. A sportsman from the host country.
C. An officer from the host country.
D. A Greek sportsman.
30. When did women start taking part in the Olympic Games?
A. In 1912. B. In 1900. C. In 1928. D. In 1924.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项
为多余选项。You might take a car, a bus, or a bike to school. But in Bangladesh, instead of
waiting for a school bus to come down their street, many students wait for a school boat
to come down the river. That's right—these students attend school on a boat!
Bangladesh is very close to sea level. 31 The flooding creates many
problems. For the nearly 160 million people living there, the periodic flooding means
that they are often unable to access roads, electricity, or telephones.
Growing up in Bangladesh, Mohammed Rezwan was often troubled by these
disruptions(破坏). 32 The name means “self-reliance (自力更生). ” The purpose of
the organization is to help the people of Bangladesh receive an education and also to
bring technology and an improved quality of life to poor people in remote areas of the
country. In 2002, Rezwan began transforming boats into schools. Each boat was built to
house between 30 and 35 students. The boats had everything you might find in a regular
classroom. The only difference was that they floated on a river.
33 Today Rezwan and his organization operate 88 boats in northern
Bangladesh. About half the boats are used as schools, and the other half are used as
temporary houses during the flood season. In addition to the schools and the temporary
housing, there are also a floating technology and training center, a library that allows
students to check out books, and a health-care center. The school boats travel along the
rivers and pick up students for classes that include computer technology, agriculture,
and human rights.
At night the boats provide additional learning opportunities for students and adults.
34 They study using solar lamps that are charged during the day at stations near the
river. Special equipment on the boats also projects lessons onto big screens made from
sailcloth. People can come down to the river bank to watch films. In all, these boats help
educate close to 90,000 families in Bangladesh.
By floating down the rivers, the school boats provide more than books. 35
"'This ‘library’ boat inspired me," said 18-year- old student Shanto Islam, who enjoys
reading science fiction books. “I started to dream.”Islam now wants to attend a
university.
A. They also deliver knowledge, opportunity, and hope to all generations. B. For this reason the land is flooded for five months of every year.
C. Parents living in the area are happy to have the boats.
D. In 1998 he founded an organization called Shidhulai.
E. He did not want to design houses, though.
F. Both of them can attend evening courses.
G. These boats have been a great success.

第二节 概要写作 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。
In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic ( 冠 状 病 毒 流 行 病 ), lots of schools
around the globe have closed their doors. Still, lessons must go on. So teachers have
been asked to give lessons online. This can create a problem for families that do not
have at least one home computer and a strong Internet connection. For them, the
learning to a digital classroom may seem all but impossible.
US schools are aware of this problem. And some have been working to make sure
home-connectivity problems don’t shut the door to online lessons. For instance, some
schools have been taking control of the computers available throughout their buildings.
Then they’ve offered them out to families in need. PCs for People is a nonprofit group.
It sells or donates them to low-income families.
But even a good computer won’t be much help if it can’t connect to the Internet.
Fortunately, all the Internet providers have agreed to provide high-speed Internet to
low-income families. These are families in which kids qualify for free or reduced-cost
school-lunch programs. The firm agreed to provide Internet service for less than $10 a
month. Such service otherwise might cost up to $100 a month.
Some schools have used other approaches. Several have bought equipment known
as portable Wi-Fi hotspots(热点), which connect to the same networks that smartphones
use. They then create a Wi-Fi signal that laptops, tablets and other computers can use to
connect to the Internet. Schools have handed those hotspots out for kids to use to
overcome some of those problems. Other schools have turned to their school buses. In
some communities, these buses have Wi-Fi. Some schools have actually gone and
parked their buses around different parts of the schools. Families that live nearby can then connect into the buses’ Wi-Fi to access online classrooms and resources. These
solutions won’t help everyone. And some approaches will barely make-do. Still, they
could help many students avoid being cut off from their teachers and classmates.

W: How's your mother now? I heard she had an operation last week.
M: She is much better. Thank you. But she still needs to stay there for two more weeks.
(Text 2)
W: Where shall I drop you off, sir?
M: I'm going to the airport, but please stop at the Healey Supermarket. My wife is waiting for me
there. We're going to Canada together.
(Text 3)
W: You seem to have a lot of work to do at your office. You're always staying late and working
overtime.
M: That's true. But the work is interesting. I don't mind extra hours at all.
(Text 4)
W: I have to take an examination every day next week.
M: I have one on Monday, another on Tuesday and two on Friday, none on Wednesday and
Thursday, I'm thankful for that.
(Text 5)
M: Is there anyone available to help make a copy of my DVD?
W: No, not until tomorrow. But you can do it yourself by following the instructions on the computer.
(Text 6)
W: Hello, emergency line. What can I do for you?
M: I am calling to report an accident.
W: Could you give me some details, sir?
M: A truck hit a car on Highway 204.
W: Has anyone been badly hurt?
M: I'm not quite sure. The driver of the truck says he is OK. But the lady in the car might have
broken her leg.W: May I have your name, sir?
M: Daniel Smith.
W: OK, Mr. Smith. We'll send an ambulance and a police car immediately. It's 11:55 now, and they
should be there by 12:05. Thanks.
(Text 7)
W: Don't you have any good news?
M: No. Yesterday I had to stay after school, because I was talking during my biology class.
W: You'd better keep quiet in class.
M: Sometimes I do. The day before yesterday, I was very quiet during my history class and I still
had to stay after class.
W: I don't understand.
M: Because I fell asleep during the class, but it wasn't my fault. The lesson was very dull.
W: I advise you to take school more seriously. If you don't pass your exam, you'll have to drop out
and work as a result.
M: I don't think that it makes much difference. If I have a job, I have to do dull work every day, but
if I'm in school, I must listen to dull teachers every day.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most lasting works and may become one of the
true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the
1954 Nobel Prize in Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world.
Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man and the Sea, I have read some
of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro.
But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me. This novel mainly
wrote about one old man alone in the sea who fishes. He caught one big fish. But he met a shark on
the way home. The old man used all his skills to fight with the shark. At last, the fish he caught was
eaten up by the shark, but he never gave up. This book shows to us that the confidence is just like the
automobile motor, and is power which makes the person go forward.泉州第十六中学 2020 年春季线上教学摸底测试

Dear Jim,
I’m more than glad to know that you are going to be an exchange student in our
high school for a whole year!
Next, I’d like to introduce some differences between Chinese and American
teaching and learning.
First, we have more students in each class than you do. In China, the number of
students in each class is usually more than 50.
Second, we have different teaching styles. The teachers usually give lectures in the
class and the students will set down what the teachers have said.
Third, the time when we stay at school is much longer than yours. We may spend at
least 8 hours at school each day.
That’s all I’d like to share. I can’t wait to meet you!
