My teachers recommended that I study economics and statistics as my A-level subjects, but I had my mind set on a life fulfilled by the arts. In fact, I was a victim of a gender stereotype made stronger since birth, that men do science and maths and women do arts or languages. Computer science, technology and physics just did not figure in my teenage world view. Nobody popular in school chose to study those subjects. Reality struck hard when I began attending job interviews and interviews would say: “It’s great that you speak foreign languages, but what else do you do?” Nobody asked my friends who had studied science or technology those questions. A survey recently showed that three of the best-paid jobs for women are in the technology sector. It’s a sector that really can change the world. We must show girls that technology has an effect on every industry out there, from fashion to architecture to journalism. Anybody can learn to code and these days it’s as important as reading and writing. I’ve realized that at university I’d achieved the wrong kind of literacy. Not being able to code limit your impact on the world far more than an ignorance of great literature. Now I have a five-year-old daughter. I don’t want her to blindly follow gender roles the way I did. I want her to know the fact a science or technical degree will not limit her creativity but expand it and broaden her horizons far more than my arts background could. I’m exposing her to Minecraft and apps, which help improve analytical thinking and problem solving skills. I’m hoping that my daughter will discover and accept her potentials in science and want to change the world. 24. What does the underlined phrase “gender stereotype” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Personal learning style. B. Sex characteristic. C. Conventional sex concept. D. Profession difference. 25. According to the author, which may be the benefit of learning science? A. Increasing job possibility. B. Winning popularity. C. Improving language competence D. Enriching imagination. 26. How did the author feel for her major choice? A. Satisfied B. Active C. Discouraged D. Regretful. 27. What may be the best title for the text? A. Art or Science, Either is OK B. Good Subjects, Good Future C. Girls, Choose More Wisely D. Catch Chances, Change the World C In the future, when robots can be used both in homes and in other areas, they could improve the living standards of people. Many people burn their energy on their daytoday tasks like cooking, cleaning after work, etc. When robots can complete such jobs, people can spend more time with their family and friends. Experts say that many major problems in the modern world are caused by miscommunication. When people have more time, they can talk freely to solve such issues and eventually create a happy society. Robots can be used on certain jobs to avoid accidents caused by careless behavior of some people. When robots are used on such work, it does not risk any human life due to accidents at the workplace. Human resources can be efficiently used by performing tasks which demand human skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Robots can be used on lowend jobs like moving heavy things and heavy weight lifting. While some people talk about how robots can be useful to humans, others voice their concerns. When robots become cheaper to produce, employers may prefer to use more robots than humans. As the technology constantly improves the abilities of robots, it could weaken the value of humans. Many people may rely on robots heavily. Some may even develop the habit of using robots on tasks that they can easily do. This could create a lazy society. As an aging society, Japan sees it as a must to build robots that take care of elderly people at their homes, because without them, the nation’s health care system can’t cope. There will simply be too many elderly people to care for as the nation faces a decreasing birth rate, an aging population, and the loosening of family ties. However, many of Japan’s elderly people would prefer human helpers rather than robots. Above all, Japan needs its dreams of robots in the home to come true because its immigration policy is antiimmigration. 28.According to the first paragraph, when robots can be used in homes, ________. A. people will spend more time on their work B. there would be more misunderstandings between humans C. people’s living standards will be improved D. people may communicate more with robots than human beings 29.Compared with humans, robots are better at ________. A. problem solving B. communicating with others C. critical thinking D. working safely 30.Some people worry that with more robots being used ________. A. people will be unwilling to work hard B. human resources won’t be needed at the workplace C. it will be harder to improve the abilities of robots D. robots will be beyond our control 31.What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. Japan will try to develop robots to be used in the home. B. The robots are well received by elderly people in Japan. C. The Japanese government encourages foreigners to move to Japan. D. Most Japanese citizens are against robots in the home. D Don't get mad the next time you catch your teenager texting when he promised to be studying. He simply may not be able to resist. A University of lowa(UI) study found teenagers are far more sensitive than adults to the immediate effect or reward of their behaviors. The findings may help explain why the initial rush of texting may be more attractive for adolescents than the long-term pay off of studying. "For the teenager, 'the rewards are attractive." says Professor Jatin Vaidya , an author of the study. "They draw adolescent. Sometimes, the rewards are a kind of motivation for them. Even when a behavior is no longer in a teenager's best interest to continue, they will, because the effect of the reward is still there and lasts much longer in adolescents than in adults ." For parents, that means limiting distraction (分心的事情)so teenagers can make better choices. Take the homework and social media dilemma: At 9 p.m., shut off everything except a computer that has no access to Facehook or Twitter, the researchers advise. "I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed access to technology," Vaidya says. But some help in netting their concentration is necessary for them so they can develop those impulse-control skills.” In their study, Vaidya and co-author Shaun Vecera note researchers generally believe teenagers are impulsive(冲动的),make bad decisions, and engage in risky behavior because the frontal lobes(额叶)of their trains are not fully developed. But the UI researchers wondered whether something more fundamental was going on with adolescents to cause behaviors independent of higher-level reasoning. "We wanted to try to understand the brain's reward system how it changes from childhood to adulthood," Says Vaidya, who adds the reward character in the human brain is easier than decision-making. “We've been trying to understand the reward process in adolescence and whether there is more to adolescence behavior than an under-developed frontal lobe,” he adds. For their study, the researchers persuaded 40 adolescents, aged 13 and 16,and 40 adults, aged 20 and 35 to participate. In the future, researchers hope to look into the psychological and neurological(神 经学上的)aspects of their results. 32.What does the passage mainly tell us? A. The initial rush of texting is less attractive for adolescents than the long-term pay off of studying. B. Always, rewards are attractive to teenagers. C. Resistance can be controlled well by adolescents. D. Getting rewards is the greatest motivation for adolescents to study. 33.Which statement agrees with Vaidya's idea? A. The influence of the reward is weak in adolescents. B. Parents should help children in making decisions. C. Children should have access to the Internet. D. Children need help in refocusing their attention. 34.What result does teenagers' brain underdevelopment lead to? A. Doing things after some thought. B. Making good decisions. C. Joining in dangerous actions. D. Escaping risky behavior. 35.How did the researchers carry out their study? A. By making a comparison of brain examinations. B. By examining adults’ brain. C. By examining teenage brain. D. By building the train’s reward system. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 Why we still need to read Dickens Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles Dickens. Many of Dickens’s works still sell well today. 36 As someone who teaches Dickens, the question why we still read him is often in my mind. 37 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the students that for Victorian readers, Dickens’s writing was a “tune-in-next-week” type of thing that caused a hit. 38 “But why should we still read this stuff?” the student asked. The answer I gave was only acceptable, “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said. The question annoyed me for years, and for years I told myself answers, but never with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from the experiences of his characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences. 39 But these are not exactly the reasons why I read dickens. My search for an answer continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickens’s novels”, she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, that’s the explanation I had sought for years. Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times. 40__ If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to tell you about yourself. A. Then a hand shot up. B. And they are placed on outstanding shelves. C. I know that wasn’t really the reason. D. I already know who it is I’ll meet in those novels. E. That’s why we still need to read him today. F. That question was never more troubling. G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens. I was born legally blind. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!” “No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ” “You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual. But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun. A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
