So what is rewilding?
Imagine our natural homes growing instead of shrinking. Imagine species (物种) diversifying
instead of declining. That’s rewilding. Rewilding is ecological restoration. Rewilding offers hope for
wildlife, humans and the planet.
Why is rewilding important and necessary?
● Our natural ecology is broken. The places where you would expect wildlife to exist
have been reduced to wet deserts. The seabed has been destroyed and there have been no living
creatures any more.
● Our wildlife is disappearing. Many wonderful species have declined over the past
century. We’ve lost more of our large animals than any European country.
● We need keystone species. These vital species, including top predators (食肉动物), drive
ecological processes. Their loss has worsened our living systems.
● Nature looks after us. Good natural ecology can provide us with clean air and water,
prevent flooding and store carbon. Rewilding can leave the world in a better state than it is today.
What are challenges?
As a long-term project, our “rewilding britain” has its challenges. Many people are not
interested, because we have got used to the lack of native forests. Many farmers oppose the idea.
They thought it a crazy idea to bring back predators because they would start killing farm animals. It
takes time to educate them. Above all, we need money! So we need your help!
Make a donation.
Help us bring back living systems and restore wild nature!
With your help we can...
● Open up new chances for rewilding and push for change.
● Develop tools to educate, influence and spread the word.
Thanks for your support.
21. Which of the following is the result of rewilding?
A. Natural disasters happen regularly. B. A lot of animals disappear.
C. Environments are destroyed. D. Species become various.
22. According to the passage, one of the challenges at present is ______.
A. people’s doubts B. a lack of volunteers
C. farmers’ disagreement D. a shortage of time
23. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a new project. B. To convince people to change their mind.
C. To warn people of the natural ecology. D. To call on people to give money.

According to a recent study, a new genetically modified rice can prevent infections of HIV, the
virus responsible for the disease AIDS.
The study reports the newly-developed rice produces proteins that attach directly to the HIV
virus. This process prevents the virus from mixing with human cells. The scientists say it can remove
the effect of the virus and block its spreading.
The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS reports that worldwide, nearly 37 million
people were living with HIV in 2017. The organization says the largest number of those is in
developing countries. Nearly two-thirds of HIV cases are in Africa. Now there is no cure for
HIV/AIDS though there have been developments in oral drug treatments to slow the progression of
the disease.
The new study predicts the rice-based method will lead to long-term use of the anti-HIV
treatment across the developing world. Researchers said the “groundbreaking” discovery is
“realistically the only way” that anti-HIV combination treatments can be produced at a cost low
enough for the developing world.
They say the easiest and most cost-effective way to use the rice will be to make it into a cream
to be put on the skin. The HIV-fighting proteins can then enter the body through the skin. People all
over the world could grow the rice and make the cream themselves. This would prevent the cost and
travel required for many patients to receive treatments and medicine.
The process of changing the genetic structure of food crops has been debated for some time.
Critics of genetically engineered crops believe they can harm people. The scientific team says
further testing is needed to ensure that the genetic engineering process does not produce any
additional chemicals that could be dangerous to people.
24. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Stress the urgency of HIV treatments. B. Provide some data about HIV.
C. Remind readers of HIV prevention. D. Introduce HIV to the public.
25. In which way will the rice be used at the lowest cost?
A. By transforming it into proteins. B. By processing it into a cream.
C. By adding it to an oral drug. D. By attaching it to the HIV virus.
26. What can we infer about the genetic engineering process?
A. It can prevent infections of HIV. B. It still requires perfecting.
C. It can produce dangerous chemicals. D. It applies to the developing world.
27. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A biology textbook. B. A first aid brochure. C. A social web page. D. A health
magazine.

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the
shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother
and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the
mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship.
These characteristics include a hierarchy (等级) of responsibilities and unconditional love, which
preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my
best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried
you in their body and gave you life! Best friend: don’t tell you how wise they are because they have
been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter
relationship can’t be very close and satisfying.
While some adult relationships are still troubled, many find them to be extremely rewarding.
This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood
of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of
being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today
contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of the workforce and technology,
which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and
daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. The
mother and child relationship is closer than any other. There is not an equal relationship. Daughters
should not feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. It isn’t that they don’t care
deeply about their mothers. It’s just that they shouldn’t be burdened with their mother’s well-being.
The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other.
Mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and
often feeling responsible for their happiness. Mothers always “trump (胜过)” friends.
28. What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. differ. B. benefit. C. prevent. D. change.
29. What do we know from the text?
A. The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.
B. A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.
C. .Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.
D. The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friends’ friendship
30. How does the author mainly prove his statements?
A. By listing data. B. By quoting sayings.
C. By giving explanations. D. By making comparisons.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Be a Good Mother and Daughter? B. Can a Mother Be a Daughter’s Best
Friend?
C. Mothers Want to Be Daughters’ Friend D. Who Is a Mother’s Best Friend?
D
Britain faces social problems as lots of people are set to lose their jobs in technological
revolution, Bank of England’s chief economist warned.
Andy Haldane said the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution will make the machine replace
humans to do thinking things. The dark side of the change could be a much bigger breakdown of
employment than in Victorian times, with professions such as accountancy (会计) among those at
risk.
A report by the accountancy firm PwC last month warned that more than 7 million jobs in
Britain had been lost over the next 20 years as technological change sweeps through workplaces.
The majority of these are in jobs in the retail, transport and manufacturing industries. However,
other traditional professional sectors could also be at serious risk.
Economists treat the arrival of increasingly intelligent computers and robots as the fourth
industrial revolution. The first was the shift from agricultural to urban societies; the second saw the
widespread use of electricity and steel, and the third was the digital revolution when computers, the
Internet and mobile phones were developed.
Mr. Haldane said the hollowing-out ( 空 洞 化 ) experienced in the past years could be on a
greater scale in the future so it is important to learn the lessons of history and ensure that people are
given training to take advantage of new opportunities.
“Jobs were effectively taken by machines of various types, there was a hollowing-out of the
jobs market, which left many people for a long period out of work and struggling to make a living,”
Haldane added, “That heightened social and financial tensions, and led to a rise in inequality. This is
the dark side of technological revolution.”
“That hollowing-out is going to be potentially on a much greater scale in the future, when we
have machines thinking and doing the cognitive and technical skills of humans.” Mr. Haldane said
professions like accountancy could be among those hardest hit by the rise of AI. But he suggested
economists could escape.
32. What is the dark side mentioned in the text?
A. The hollowing-out has become a major social problem.
B. The technological revolution causes people to lose jobs.
C. Intelligent computers and robots decrease good workers.
D. Less and less people have the desire to learn accountancy
33. Why are economists the lucky dog in the new technological revolution?
A. The study about economy is at a low level.
B. Economists work on a traditional professional job.
C. Economists have the chance to avoid technological revolution.
D. There is no machine that can work as an economist.
34. What should be done to deal with the serious situation?
A. To call for people to devote more to studying history.
B. To warn people not to work on transport and manufacturing industries.
C. To teach people to grasp the chances technological revolution brings about.
D. To ask workers to develop and think as the intelligent computers and robots do.
35. What attitude did Haldane have towards the future employment?
A. Worried. B. Aggressive. C. Critical. D. Positive.
